Bishop Ward students to hold art fair at Alcott Arts Center
Bishop Ward students will hold an art fair in a month-long celebration at the Alcott Arts Center, 180 S. 18th St., Kansas City, Kan., beginning this weekend. The opening celebration is at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, where a variety of works and talents will be performed by different school departments. Community forums planned on KCKPS bond issue
Kansas City, Kan., Public Schools is sponsoring community forums at Kansas City, Kan., Public Library branches to discuss the new proposed no-tax increase bond referendum, which will be on the Nov. 8 ballot. Remaining forums:

This bond referendum will allow the district to make improvements to every school, and build four new ones, all with no increase in taxes for community residents, a spokesman said. The public is invited to attend a forum to learn more about the bond issue.

‘Understanding Relationships’ to be presented Oct. 9 at Bonner Springs Library
“Understanding Relationships” will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Bonner Springs Public Library, 201 N. Nettleton Ave., Bonner Springs. There is no charge for the program. Richard D. Bates, marriage and family therapist from the Center for Family Healing, will present the program and will talk about topics such as intimacy, family and marital discord, parenting, community and dealing with crisis. Bates is a U.S. Army veteran who trained as a marriage and family therapist in collaboration with Friends University and Christ First Counseling Center in Topeka. He holds a master of science in marriage and family therapy, as well as a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and years of experience as a registered nurse in the intensive care unit and mental health.
Vigil planned Oct. 10 to raise awareness for infant loss
Healthy Communities Wyandotte will hold a candlelight vigil and balloon release from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10, at Huron Park, located between 6th and 7th on Ann Avenue in downtown Kansas City, Kan. In partnership with Project HOPE, the purpose of this event is to raise awareness of pregnancy and infant loss in Wyandotte County.

Dialogue on reducing violence in community to be Tuesday night
The first of four dialogues on reducing community violence will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11. It will be held at Schlagle High School, 2214 N. 59th St., Kansas City, Kan. Sponsored by the Mayor’s Clergy Roundtable, four dialogues will place those who attend into groups of 10 to 15 people, with a facilitator assigned to lead the dialogue. It is a follow-up to the community forum held Sept. 20 to start a dialogue on ideas for reducing violence in Kansas City, Kan. Registration for the dialogue on Oct. 11 will begin at 6 p.m. The discussions will continue on how the community and law enforcement can work together to make Kansas City, Kan., a safer place to live. The dialogues are open to the public. Other dialogues are scheduled Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Harmon High School, 24000 Steele Road, Kansas City, Kan.; Tuesday, Nov. 29, at Sumner Academy, 1610 N. 8th St., Kansas City, Kan; and on Tuesday, Dec. 13, at a location to be announced.

Lineman’s rodeo to be Oct. 15
The 33rd Annual International Lineman’s Rodeo will be Oct. 15 in Bonner Springs, Kan. The rodeo competition will occur on Saturday, Oct. 15, at the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame in Bonner Springs, kicking off at 7 a.m. Team and apprentice events will include The Hurtman Rescue, the Pole Climb, and several mystery events. Museum plans History Howl
The third annual History Howl will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Wyandotte County Museum. Medicare open enrollment event to be Oct. 17
U.S. Rep. Kevin Yoder, R-3rd Dist., will be the host of two Medicare open enrollment assistance events in October. The events will help provide information for seniors during the Medicare open enrollment period, a spokesman said. The first event will be from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, Oct. 17, at Kansas City Kansas Community College Technical Education Center, 6565 State Ave. The second event will be from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Shawnee Town Hall. Trained volunteers from the Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas (SHICK) program will be on hand at the event to provide one-on-one assistance to seniors who have questions, or who wish to make changes to their plans. The Medicare Open Enrollment Period extends from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7. Medicare beneficiaries who wish to make changes or enroll for the first time need to bring their Medicare card, any current prescriptions (including dosage and frequency), and a list of preferred pharmacies. Business West, Community College to sponsor Candidates’ Forum
Business West, along with other neighborhood associations in Wyandotte County and the Kansas City Kansas Community College, will sponsor a Candidate’s Forum from 6 p.m. until 8:05 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, in the Upper Jewell Building at KCKCC, 7250 State Ave. The forum will be taped for playback on the college’s Community Access Channel 17. The format: Each candidate will have two minutes for introductory remarks. A panel of newspaper editors and neighborhood leaders will ask questions of each candidate. Candidates will have one minute to respond to each question. The panel will have the opportunity to ask follow-up questions. Each candidate will have one minute to make closing remarks. This will not be a debate. Representatives will be allowed to speak for candidates who are not able to attend. However, these representatives will only be able to make opening and closing remarks.

Used book sale to be Oct. 18-20 at KCKCC
The My Shelf to Yours Book Sale will be from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 18 and 20 in Room 2325 on the lower level of the Jewell Building on the Kansas City Kansas Community College campus, 7250 State Ave. It will also be open 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 19. The sale is open to the public as well as students, staff and faculty. All books will be $1 or seven books for $5, and proceeds benefit the student scholarship fund. The KCKCC Intercultural Center uses the fund to distribute scholarships for textbooks and tuition to students who have a financial need.
Cowboy poet and folklorist to speak Oct. 19 at Bonner Springs Library
Jim Hoy, cowboy poet and folklorist, will be featured at a program Oct. 19 at the Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton Ave., Bonner Springs. He will discuss “Kansas Legends and Folktales” in a program sponsored by the Kansas Humanities Council. Exaggerated narratives and tall tales, such as stories about grasshoppers so big that cowboys could ride them, help people understand the character of the state and its people, according to the author. Hoy will appear at 6 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Bonner Springs City Library. The program is free and open to the public.
Grinter Place to hold Campfire Chat Oct. 22
The Grinter Place Campfire Chat will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at the historic home, 1420 S. 78th St., Kansas City, Kan. The program will be a historical reenactment presentation about Octave Chanute, who built the Hannibal Bridge, designed Kansas City stockyards, platted Lenexa, mentored the Wright Brothers and is the namesake of Chanute, Kan. There will be hot dogs, smores and tours of the Grinter House, an 1857 home that is a state museum. The event sponsor is the Grinter Place Friends. It will be an educational event open to all ages.

Boo Bash Halloween Party to be Oct. 29
The 4th Annual Boo Bash Halloween Party will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton Ave., Bonner Springs. The Board of Public Utilities will hold a free Energy Efficiency Workshop on Tuesday, Nov. 1. The event will demonstrate easy and effective weatherization and energy efficiency strategies to help consumers save electricity, water and money in their homes.
