Program planned on heat stroke warning signs
A program, “Heat Stroke: Warning Signs and How to Prevent it,” will be presented from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, at the Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan. In partnership with Mercy and Truth, Dr. Alex Kieu will share information to help learn the signs of a heat stroke and ways to prevent it, as well as learning ways to prevent sunburns and still enjoy summer.
NAACP to meet June 7
The Kansas City, Kan., Branch NAACP will meet on Tuesday, June 7, at the Bethany Medical Building, second floor meeting room, 21 N. 12th St., Kansas City, Kan. Scholarship golf tournament planned June 8
The Kansas City, Kan., Foundation for Excellence will hold the 26th annual Scholarship Golf Tournament on June 8 at Sunflower Hills Golf Course, 122nd and Riverview, Bonner Springs, Kan. There will be a shotgun start for the morning flight at 7:30 a.m., after registration and breakfast at 6:30 a.m. Lunch and awards will be at 1 p.m. at the George Meyn Center. There is also an afternoon flight beginning at 1 p.m. after the lunch. Dinner and awards will be at 6 p.m. at the George Meyn Center. Proceeds from the tournament will go toward scholarships for at least 15 Kansas City, Kan., Public Schools seniors. Fairfax project updates to be discussed June 9
Fairfax project updates will be the topic of the June 9 luncheon of the Fairfax Industrial Association. Kids’ fishing derby planned June 11
The Leavenworth Road Association and the Unified Government Parks Department are planning a kids’ fishing derby June 11 at Wyandotte County Lake Park, 91st and Leavenworth Road. The Ed and Ione Trapp Kids’ Free Fishing Derby will begin with registration at 7 a.m. Saturday, June 11, at the kids’ pond at Wyandotte County Lake. The fishing derby will be from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. There will be prizes and trophies awarded. Kids who are 3 to 15 years old may participate.
Live at the Legends summer concert to be June 11
Legends Outlets will again offer free outdoor entertainment through its Live at the Legends Summer Concert Series on Saturday evenings in June and July. All concerts will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. at Legends Outlets’ Civic Courtyard Fountain, in front of AMC Legends 14 Theatre, at 1843 Village West Parkway, Kansas City, Kan. Community health fair planned June 25
A community health fair is planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at 1240 Troup Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Sponsored by Mt. Carmel Redevelopment Corp., the health fair will feature more than 90 health organizations. Health screenings will include kidney, blood glucose, immunizations and free mammograms for uninsured women ages 40 to 64. Along with screenings, there will be information about health and nutrition, financial services and other community resources. The Dr. Norge W. Jerome Passport to Good Health Fair is free and open to the public. “The purpose of this event is to increase health awareness by providing health screenings, activities, materials, demonstrations, and information; increase awareness of local, state, and national health services and resources; motivate participants to make positive health behavior changes; provide immunizations for children and adults; teach self-care practices; identify topics and participants for future extension educational health programs; and establish extension agents as a source for educational health programming in the metropolitan area,’ stated Marie Frasure, community outreach director. Once participants have been screened and have visited exhibitors on the inside, there will be food and family oriented activities featured on the outside with entertainment, games, prizes, face painting, animal balloons, funnel cakes and more beginning at noon. “The Dr. Norge W. 1951 flood to be remembered at historical society meeting
The 1951 flood will be the topic at the June 26 meeting of the Wyandotte County Historical Society and Museum, 631 N. 126th St., Bonner Springs, Kan. Benefit concert planned for slain detective’s family
The Kansas City, Kan., Community Orchestra, under the direction of Jeff Beck, will present a benefit concert June 30 for the family of Detective Brad Lancaster. KCK Women’s Chamber going to lunch challenge at Harvesters
