Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Wyandotte County

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Wyandotte County until 2:15 p.m. Thursday.

This is in addition to the tornado watch the area is already under.

At 1:22 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located near Vinland and moving northeast at 65 mph.

This storm has 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail.

Vehicles may see damage from the hail in this storm. Wind damage may occur to roofs, siding and trees.

I-70, I-35, I-635, I-435 and I-20 may be affected, the weather service said.

Residents are urged to pay attention to the possibility of a tornado and be prepared to move quickly to a place of safety, according to the weather service.

Tornado watch issued for area

A tornado watch has been issued by the National Weather Service through 8 p.m. Thursday, March 27, in Wyandotte County and the surrounding area.

At 12:41 p.m., radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 11 miles northwest of Ottawa moving northeast at about 55 mph.

Hail up to the size of pennies and wind gusts to 40 mph are expected with this storm.

I-35 and the I-435 loop are expected to be affected.

The storm also may intensify.

Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop along a cold front this afternoon in the region.

According to the National Weather Service, the storms will begin just west of I-=35 and grow more organized as they push east of the Kansas City area.

Large hail and damaging winds are the primary threats of the storm, the weather service said.

If clouds clear out more than expected, the atmosphere will become unstable and the severe threat may be higher.

Timing of the storm may change, but the latest data suggests that storms will develop earlier in the afternoon in the Kansas City area.

A strong front will race through the area and move into central Missouri by the evening hours.

There is a slight risk of large hail, a slight risk of damaging winds and a minimal risk of tornadoes with this storm.

The chance of thunderstorms today is 30 percent in Wyandotte County.

Temperatures at 8 a.m. Thursday were 55 degrees. The temperature may rise to 67.

Winds today will be 22 mph to 28 mph, with gusts as high as 39 mph.
