The Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science will hold a spring recruiting session at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, at the Bonner Springs Public Library, 201 N. Nettleton Ave., Bonner Springs.
Kansas high school sophomores are invited to attend the free information session.
Students who complete the Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science receive a high school diploma from their high school and receive a minimum of 68 hours college credit from Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kan.
Tuition, fees and books for 68 credit hours are free for students attending a Kansas public high school.

RSVP volunteers honored for service

The United Way of Wyandotte County recently honored the more than 180 RSVP volunteers who serve in Wyandotte County.
These volunteers contributed more than 20,000 hours working in nonprofit agencies, nursing homes, schools and governmental offices. They help as tutors, work in the office, greet clients, sew comfort items, help stock food pantries or visit with the sick and lonely.
These volunteers range in age from 55 years old to nearly 100 years of age. In fact, 20 volunteers older than 90 were given special recognition for their contribution to our community. They are Helen Ambrose, Marlan Amrein, Ruth Bartkoski, Oleta Bogard, Eileen Dechant, Katherine Gonzalez, Meryle Hotujac, Irene Kyle, Anna Landauer, Christine Magana, Norene Mealman, Johnella Newton, Kathryn Osburn, Lorraine Proctor, LaNelle Radcliffe, Ruth Schultz, Charlotte Stack, Sylvia Tate, Mary Evelyn Taylor and Alice Zimmerman. These volunteers are proof that those who volunteer live longer as a recent study indicated.
Seven RSVP members were awarded with the RSVP Lifetime Achievement Award, which is given to volunteers who have recorded more than 7,500 hours of service. Those honored include: Oleta Bogard, Betty Jean Doughty, Madelyn Fotovich, Brenda C. Jones, Mabel Shutt and Norma Jacob who has recorded more than 30,000 volunteer hours.
The Wyandotte County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program promotes volunteerism in those 55 years and older through recruitment, placement and training. Those who are older than 55 and like to volunteer may contact Emily Worm at 913-371-3674 ext. 1321 or [email protected].

More storms possible Thursday
Thursday’s forecast includes a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after noon.
Skies will be cloudy with a high near 64 on Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service, Wyandotte County is under a slight risk for severe weather today, while an area of central Missouri is under a moderate risk.
This severe weather between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., contains a higher risk of tornadoes, large hail and severe weather in central Missouri. Storms should move out of the region by 9 p.m. and midnight.
Tonight brings a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms before 10 p.m. in Wyandotte County, then a slight chance of showers between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. The weather will turn windy with 17 to 21 mph wind speeds and gusts up to 29 mph.
Friday’s weather wlll be mostly sunny, with a high near 50. The breezy weather continues with winds from 18 to 22 mph, with gusts as high of 30 mph.
