The heat index may hit the upper 90s and lower 100s today in Wyandotte County.

At 9 a.m., temperatures were 82 with a heat index of 86. At 3 p.m. today, the National Weather Service predicts a temperature of 91 degrees with a heat index of 98.

Hot and humid conditions mean that residents should take precautions for the heat.

Some advice from the National Weather Service:
• Slow down; reduce, eliminate or reschedule outdoor activity.
• Dress for summer; wear lightweight, light-colored clothes.
• Drink plenty of water; avoid alcohol and caffeinated fluids.
• Spend time in air-conditioned places.
• Don’t get too much sun; sunburn reduces the body’s ability to dissipate heat.

A complex of thunderstorms could develop north of the Kansas City area tonight, according to the weather service. There is a 20 percent chance of severe thunderstorms here. The storm also could bring damaging winds and small hail along and north of the Highway 36 corridor, near St. Joseph, Mo., after midnight.

There is also a 50 percent chance for isolated severe storms north of a Kirksville, Mo., to Kansas City line on Thursday, according to the weather service. These storms could bring large hail and damaging winds.

Wolf to speak at Historical Society meeting June 22

Don Wolf, a Kansas City, Kan., photographer and author who recently wrote the book, “A Croatian Love Story,” will be the guest speaker at the quarterly meeting at 2 p.m. June 22 of the Wyandotte County Historical Society, 631 N. 126th, Bonner Springs.

A lifelong resident of Wyandotte County, Wolf grew up on Strawberry Hill watching newly arrived immigrants from Croatia struggle to build, educate, become citizens in the search for the American dream without forgetting those left at home. His book was released last fall.

The Croatian people of Strawberry Hill educated their people and moved into local politics carving out their position of strength in the Kansas City, Kan., community. Spreading throughout the Greater Kansas City area they continue to preserve and cherish their traditions as they embrace the freedoms of the United States. Wolf’s heritage, culture and his Croatian love story is in this presentation.
Wolf will have copies of his book available for purchase. There will also be light refreshments after the meeting, which starts at 2 p.m.
