Severe thunderstorm watch in effect

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for Wyandotte County from 2:35 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, June 28.

Thunderstorms are developing from south central Kansas and moving toward the area this afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service.

A few storms may be strong to severe. Winds may be the greatest threat, the weather service said. Heavy rain may lead to areas of flash flooding.

Storms possible today

Scattered thunderstorms will be possible today through late this evening in Wyandotte County, according to the National Weather Service.

Today’s high will be near 82, and winds will be around 15 mph with gusts as high as 22 mph, the weather service said. There is an 80 percent chance of precipitation.

Thunderstorms may develop this morning along old outflow boundaries, with additional storms developing into the afternoon.

These storms are expected to move across the area, after 1 p.m., through the afternoon and evening hours.

The potential exists for a few strong to severe storms with wind damage the greatest threat, although widespread hazardous weather is not anticipated today, the weather service said. Locally heavy rainfall could lead to isolated areas of flash flooding later today.

Additional rounds of thunderstorms are expected Sunday evening and on Monday into Monday night, according to the weather service. The chance of rain is 10 percent Sunday in Wyandotte County. These might be strong to severe with large hail and damaging winds the primary hazards.

The heat index is expected to reach the upper 90s Sunday and Monday afternoon across the region, the weather service said.

Bonner Springs to hold arts festival June 28
A Festival of the Arts will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 28, in downtown Bonner Springs. Admission is free. After the event, fireworks will follow by Bonner Blast. There will be fine arts displays, performances, live music, custom crafts vendors, cultural cuisines, circus acts, a kids’ creative corner, magician, dancers, martial arts and food truck. Spaghetti dinner, silent auction planned
Grinter Chapel United Methodist Church Annual Spaghetti Dinner and Silent Auction will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. June 28 at 7819 Swartz Road. The meal includes all-you-can-eat spaghetti, salad, bread, drink and dessert: Adults, $8; kids under 10, $4.

Library plans Mad Scientist’s Tea Party
A Mad Scientist’s Tea party is planned from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at the South Kansas City, Kan., Public Library, 3104 Strong Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Ages 3 and older may participate in science fun. Snacks are planned. Registration is required to 913-722-7400.

Magic show planned today
A magic show is planned for children from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at the West Wyandotte Library auditorium, 1737 N. 82nd, Kansas City, Kan. Children will see how balloon animals are made. CHWC fundraiser planned June 28

CHWC will hold a fundraiser for community redevelopment at 5 p.m. June 28 at Sporting Park, Kansas City, Kan. At the event, the “Continue the Legacy” award will be presented to Craig and Karen Gaffney in honor of their dedication to Community Housing of Wyandotte County, and the Gaffneys’ philanthropic work in the community. The fundraiser begins at 5 p.m. June 28 with cocktails. Dinner, dancing, an auction and field activities will follow. Last year, the event raised nearly $100,000 for the organization. Summer concert to be June 28 at Legends
Dave and Buster’s Summer Concert Series will begin at 9 p.m. Saturday, June 28, on the rooftop patio at The Legends Outlets. Allied Saints will perform from 9 p.m. to close June 28. Different bands will play on Saturdays through September, excluding July 5.

Fundraising dinner planned
An Italian dinner will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at St. Patrick Catholic Church parish center, 94th and State Avenue. The dinner is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. Salad, lasagna or spaghetti and meatballs, homemade Italian cookies with coffee, tea and lemonade will be available. Donations are $9, adults; $6, children under 10.
