Cold weather moves in Sunday

Cold weather has moved into the Wyandotte County area, with temperatures to reach a high of only 35 degrees today.

A light dusting of snow on lawns, less than a half-inch, greeted Wyandotte County residents this morning.

It followed rain and a thunderstorm on Saturday night.

At 11 a.m., a radar map showed storm clouds from Joplin to Marshall, Mo., southeast of the Kansas City area.

The rest of Sunday’s weather will be mostly cloudy and mostly sunny skies.

The weather on Monday, St. Patrick’s Day, will warm up a bit, to 55 degrees, the weather service said.  Sunny skies are predicted. Winds will be 5 to 14 mph, gusting to 20 mph.

Tuesday, temperatures may climb to 64 degrees with mostly sunny skies. Winds will be 13 to 17 mph, and will change from the south to the west in the afternoon, gusting up to 26 mph.

Wednesday will drop back to 54, while Thursday’s forecast is sunny and 64.

Snow possible Sunday, according to weather service

A few showers and thunderstorms may bring rain and snow to Wyandotte County today, according to the National Weather Service.

It will be half as warm Sunday as it was Saturday.

A strong cold front will push southward through the area tonight with strong winds developing behind the front, the weather service said.

Winds could gust as high as 45 mph before the front.

Temperatures also will drop quickly, allowing a transition from rain to snow to occur from north to south tonight.

There will likely be a period of sleet as well during the transition.

Most areas will see less than an inch of snow from this storm.

At 6 p.m., storm clouds were in the Topeka, Manhattan, Leavenworth and Emporia, Kan., areas.

Before 5 a.m. Sunday, rain showers are likely.

The weather service forecast shows a slight chance of thunderstorms at 9 p.m. Saturday, showers likely at midnight, then rain likely at 3 a.m.

After 5 a.m., rain and sleet are likely. The weather service forecast shows snow likely at 6 a.m. Sunday, chance of snow at 9 a.m., slight chance of wintry mix at noon, slight chance of rain and snow from 2 to 3 p.m.,  and mostly cloudy skies at 3 p.m. Sunday.

The high Sunday will be near 36.

Nice weather, a bit windy, in today’s forecast

Today’s temperatures will reach a high of 65 as a weak cold front pushes through the area in the afternoon.

The same dry conditions and low humidity that caused Thursday’s red flag warning are still a concern to the National Weather Service, which is cautioning residents against any outdoor burning today.

Winds will be 13 to 15 mph, gusting to 21 mph today.

Tonight’s low will be around 40 degrees. The weather tonight is mostly clear.

Rain and snow are possible over the weekend, starting Saturday night, according to the weather service.

Saturday will be sunny with a high temperature of 71.

Saturday night, there is a chance of rain after 7 p.m., mixing with snow after 1 a.m. Thunder is also possible. The chance of precipitation is 50 percent. Winds may gust up to 26 mph.

On Sunday, there is a chance of rain and snow before 1 p.m., then a slight chance of snow. The chance of precipitation is 50 percent. Winds may gust up to 29 mph.

Sunday night’s forecast is a slight (20 percent) chance of snow before 7 p.m. The low will be around 26 degrees.

Monday’s weather is back to mostly sunny skies, with a high of 54.

A 20 percent chance of rain is in Tuesday’s forecast, and Tuesday night, there is a 20 percent chance of rain and snow.

On Wednesday, the 20 percent chance of rain and snow continues, with a high near 51.

Thursday’s forecast is mostly sunny, with a high near 57.
