Winter storm hits Wyandotte County

Wyandotte County is in the throes of a winter storm on Thursday morning, with about five inches of snow on the ground and more snow coming down through this afternoon.

The winter storm warning is in effect through 6 p.m. Thursday. From 3 to 7 inches of snow is possible today, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

Multiple accidents were reported Thursday morning on area highways, according to KC Scout. Residents were advised not to go out if they don’t have to. Many schools canceled classes today. Several crashes were reported in the I-70 and I-635 area of Kansas City, Kansas. The exit from westbound I-70 to northbound I-635 was closed.

A wintry mix of sleet, freezing rain, snow and rain fell during the predawn hours, making the transition to snow this morning, the weather service said. The heaviest snow will be in the morning, through noon. The storm was moving toward the east.

Blowing and drifting snow with 20 to 25 mph winds and gusts to 35 mph will make driving difficult today.

Snow will diminish between noon and 3 p.m. and should exit the area by 6 p.m.

The weather service advised people who must travel to take an extra flashlight, food and water in their vehicles in case of an emergency. The latest road conditions in Kansas are available by calling 5-1-1. For Kansas City area highway conditions, visit www.kcscout.net.

According to a post on the Unified Government website, all “hot routes” (major roads) and most secondary routes were treated with salt before switching to plowing operations in the early morning. Plowing will continue through this evening, and residents are encouraged to stay home.

Today, there is a 100 percent chance of snow, mainly before 4 p.m. The snow could be heavy at times, and there will be areas of blowing snow before noon, the weather service said. The high will be near 26 with a north wind of 10 to 18 mph, gusting as high as 33 mph. From 3 to 7 inches of snow are possible.

Tonight, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 5, according to the weather service. A north northwest wind of 5 to 7 mph will become calm. Winds may gust up to 18 mph.

Friday, it will be sunny, with a high near 40, the weather service said. Wind chill values will be between zero and 10. A southwest wind of 6 to 15 mph will gust as high as 28 mph.

Friday night, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 20, according to the weather service. A southwest wind of 5 to 10 mph will become north northeast after midnight. Winds may gust as high as 18 mph.

Saturday, it will be sunny, with a high near 41, the weather service said. A northeast wind of 5 to 10 mph will become south southeast in the afternoon.

Saturday night, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 32, according to the weather service.

Sunday, it will be sunny, with a high near 56, the weather service.

Sunday night, it will be partly cloudy, with a low of 40, according to the weather service.

On Monday, Presidents Day, it will be partly sunny, with a high near 59, the weather service said.

Monday night, there is a 30 percent chance of rain before midnight, with a low of 27, according to the weather service.

Wyandotte County is under a winter storm watch from 12:01 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, through 6 p.m. Feb. 17, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

A wintry mix is likely late tonight followed by snow Thursday morning and afternoon, the weather service said.

From 4 to 8 inches of snow, and one-tenth of an inch of ice is possible, according to the weather service.

Winds may gust as high as 38 mph today, and as high as 32 mph on Thursday, the weather service said.

Rain with thunderstorms will become likely late this afternoon and evening, according to the weather service.

Cold air moving southward will result in a transition from liquid to a mix of sleet and freezing rain to snow from northwest to southeast with time, the weather service said.

Blowing and drifting snow is likely, with 11 to 18 mph winds and 32 mph gusts possible Thursday, according to the weather service.

Periods of moderate to heavy snow paired with gusty winds on Thursday morning and early afternoon could lead to significantly reduced visibilities and very hazardous travel conditions, the weather service said.

Heaviest snowfall accumulations at this time are expected in a narrow band from the southwestern side of the Kansas City area to Moberly, Missouri, where 8 inches of snow is possible, the weather service said.

Today, there is a 30 percent chance of rain, mainly after 4 p.m., the weather service said. The high will be near 64 with a south southwest wind of 13 to 20 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Winds may gust as high as 38 mph. Less than a tenth of an inch of rain is possible.

Tonight, there is an 80 percent chance of rain, freezing rain and sleet before 4 a.m., then snow, freezing rain and sleet between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m., then snow and freezing rain after 5 a.m., according to the weather service. Some thunder also is possible. The low will be around 21. A west wind of 11 to 17 mph will become north northeast after midnight. Winds may gust as high as 32 mph. New ice accumulation will be less than one-tenth of an inch possible. New snow and sleet accumulation will be less than a half-inch possible.

The high will be near 26. A north northwest wind of 11 to 18 mph will gust as high as 32 mph. New snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches is possible.

Wyandotte County is under a red flag warning from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, according to the National Weather Service.

The red flag warning is a caution that dangerous fire weather may develop Tuesday afternoon, with high winds, dry conditions and low humidity.

Winds could gust as high as 34 mph today, according to the weather service. Outdoor burning is not recommended today, the weather service said.

Also in the forecast is a winter storm on Thursday. Rain is likely on Wednesday, with rain changing to a mix Wednesday night and eventually to snow on Thursday, the weather service said. Freezing rain could start around 2 a.m. Thursday, according to the current forecast, which is subject to change.

From 2 to 4 inches of snow is possible on Thursday, the weather service said. There is still a certain amount of uncertainty as to the track, timing and amounts of snow, however.

Today, there will be increasing clouds, with a high near 65 and a south wind of 10 to 15 mph increasing to 17 to 22 in the afternoon, the weather service said. Winds may gust up to 34 mph.

Tonight, it will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 54 and a south wind of 17 to 22 mph, gusting as high as 33 mph, according to the weather service.

Wednesday, there is a 60 percent chance of rain, mainly after noon, the weather service said. It will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 58. A south southwest wind of 11 to 16 mph will become north in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 31 mph. Less than a tenth of an inch of rain is possible.

Wednesday night, there is an 80 percent chance of rain, possibly mixed with freezing rain before 3 a.m., then snow, possibly mixed with freezing rain and sleet between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m., followed by snow, mixed with freezing rain after 4 a.m., according to the weather service. The low will be aroun 21 with a north northeast wind of 10 to 16 mph, gusting to 25 mph. Little or no ice accumulation is expected. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half-inch is possible.

Thursday, there is a 70 percent chance of snow, possibly mixed with freezing rain, and becoming all snow after 7 a.m., the weather service said. The snow could be heavy at times. Patchy blowing snow is possible between 7 a.m. and noon. It will be cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 29. A north wind of 11 to 18 mph will gust as high as 32 mph. From 2 to 4 inches of snow is possible.
