Rain possible today; temperatures lower this week

A band of showers and thunderstorms will travel southeast, bringing a 50 percent chance of rain to Wyandotte County today, according to the National Weather Service.

Areas north of I-70 may see morning storms with the storm moving in the southeast direction.

A few strong storms are possible but no severe weather is expected, the weather service said.

Skies will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 81. A north wind will be from 8 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph.

Tonight’s low will be 53, according to the weather service.

On Tuesday, the high temperature will be near 74, with sunny skies.

Heat index to rise to nearly 100 degrees today

It will feel like 100 degrees this afternoon, as heat and humidity returns to the forecast.

The National Weather Service said temperatures will rise into the lower and middle 90s today, with a high near 94 in Wyandotte County. With humidity, the heat index will be as high as 98 here.

At 9 a.m. the temperature was 76 degrees. A south-southwest wind will be 11 to 14 mph today, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

A cold front will drop southward on Saturday, and a few storms may become severe over northern Missouri and extreme northeast Kansas, producing damaging winds and large hail. However, Wyandotte County is south of that area expected to have severe storms; there is a slighter chance of some non-severe storms and precipitation here.

The chance of rain and thunderstorms increases to 50 percent on Monday.

After the rain on Monday, Tuesday’s high is expected to be an unseasonably cool 73 degrees.

Storm brings rain, power outages to Wyandotte County

A storm moved through Wyandotte County on Monday night through 1 a.m. Tuesday.

About 1.57 inches of rain was recorded at the downtown Kansas City, Mo., airport, according to National Weather Service data.

Besides rain, lightning and high winds, some area residents experienced power outages.

The Board of Public Utilities’ power outage map showed 3,085 places in Wyandotte County without power around 5 a.m. Tuesday. By 7:43 a.m., there were 2,220 places without power in Wyandotte County. The locations were scattered throughout the county. At 8:12 a.m., there were a reported 2,791 customers out. At 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, there were 1,486 customers affected, according to the power outage map.

The weather service said today’s high will be near 84, much cooler than Monday, with mostly sunny skies.

A north-northwest wind will be from 9 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph, according to the weather service.
