Temperatures will cool to the high 80s today, according to the National Weather Service forecast, with a heat index as high as 96.

Scattered thunderstorms are possible in the region today, the weather service said. Any storms are expected to diminish with sunset, and are not expected to be severe.

Saturday’s high will be near 87 and Sunday’s high will be near 90, according to the weather service.

Warmer conditions will return on Monday, when the high may reach 96, according to the weather service.

A cold front will move through Monday night and Tuesday, creating the next opportunity for thunderstorms, the weather service said. Tuesday’s high may be near 87.

Today, it will be partly sunny, with a high near 88 and a heat index as high as 96, the weather service said. A north northwest wind will be 6 to 11 mph.

Tonight, it will be partly cloudy, with a low of 71 and a north northeast wind of 6 to 8 mph, according to the weather service.

Saturday, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 87 and a northeast wind of 6 to 8 mph, the weather service said.

An excessive heat warning is in effect through 11 p.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

The heat index may reach as high as 102 in Wyandotte County, with a high temperature near 92 on Thursday, the weather service said.

Some areas of the region will see lingering cloud cover, keeping the temperature and heat index slightly cooler, according to the weather service.

Some parts of Wyandotte County received a little rain Thursday morning. Some storms were possible during the morning hours Thursday, the weather service said, and more rain and storms are possible after 5 p.m.

Storms could be strong to severe at times, with wind the main hazard, followed by small hail. Some flash flooding and area flooding is possible.

Storms also are possible Friday morning, with wind and hail the main hazards, according to the weather service. Friday’s forecast also shows a chance of showers and storms after 1 p.m. in Wyandotte County.

Temperatures will drop to a high of 88 on Friday, then are forecast to be near 86 on Saturday, the weather service said.

Sunday’s high will see an increase to 91, with Monday’s high near 96, according to the weather service.

Today, there is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before noon, then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5 p.m., the weather service said. The high will be near 92 with a heat index as high as 102. An east wind of 5 to 8 mph will become south in the afternoon. Less than a tenth of an inch of rain is possible.

An excessive heat warning is in effect through 11 p.m. Thursday, July 7, according to the National Weather Service.

The heat index may range from 103 to 109 through Thursday in the region, the weather service said.

In Wyandotte County, today’s high will be near 97 with a heat index as high as 107, according to the weather service.

Storms and rain are possible tonight, with a 20 percent chance of precipitation, the weather service said.

More hot weather is possible on Thursday, when the high may be near 94 with a heat index of 102, the weather service said.

More storms move in on Thursday and Friday, and the high on Friday will drop to 87, according to the weather service.

There will be two days of highs in the upper 80s before temperatures climb to 92 on Sunday, and Monday’s high temperature will be 95, the weather service said.

Today, residents are advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check on relatives and neighbors, the weather service said. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Those who work or spend time outdoors should take extra precautions, the weather service said. If possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning o evening. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothes when possible.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location, the weather service said. Heat stroke is an emergency and 911 can be called.
