Wyandotte County is under a high wind warning from 9 a.m. until midnight Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Winds of 20 to 30 mph could reach gusts as high as 55 mph today, the weather service said.

Damaging winds potentially could blow down trees and power lines, according to the weather service. Widespread power outages are possible. Travel w ill be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles, the weather service said.

Residents are advised to avoid being outside in forested areas and around trees and branches, the weather service said. If possible, remain in the lower levels of their homes during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Those who must drive should use caution, according to the weather service.

The weather service predicts the highest winds from noon to 9 p.m. in the Kansas City area. At noon, wind gusts could reach 49; at 3 p.m., 55; and at 6 p.m., 58 mph, according to the weather service. By 9 p.m., wind gusts should drop to 37 mph.

Showers and thunderstorms are possible this evening, the weather service said. There is a slight risk of severe weather this evening north of I-70, and some storms may produce damaging wind gusts, according to the weather service.

There also are elevated fire weather concerns Wednesday, the weather service said. High winds combined with low relative humidity and dry fuels will result in a higher risk of fire danger. Burning is discouraged, according to the weather service.

Today, there is a 50 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms after 5 p.m., the weather service said. The high will be near 73. It will be windy, with a south wind of 20 to 30 mph, gusting up to 55 mph. Less than a tenth of an inch of rain is in the forecast.

Tonight, there is a 50 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms before 7 p.m. It will be mostly cloudy in the early evening, then gradually clearing, with a low of 36, according to the weather service. It will be windy, with a south southwest wind of 23 to 33 mph becoming west northwest 7 to 12 mph. Winds may gust up to 60 mph. Less than an inch of precipitation is possible.

Thursday, it will be sunny, with a high near 50, the weather service said. A west northwest wind of 6 mph will become calm in the afternoon.

Thursday night, it will be mostly clear with a low of 34, according to the weather service. A calm wind will become east around 6 mph in the evening.

Friday, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 53, the weather service said. An east wind around 6 mph will become north northwest in the afternoon. Winds may gust as high as 18 mph.

Friday night, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 26, according to the weather service.

Saturday, it will be sunny, with a high near 37, the weather service said.

Saturday night, it will be clear, with a low of 21, according to the weather service.

Sunday, it will be sunny, with a high near 46, the weather service said.

High wind warning issued for Wednesday

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning from 9 a.m. to midnight on Wednesday, Dec. 15.

Southerly wind gusts of up to 50 mph are possible in Wyandotte County, according to the weather service. A few gusts could be stronger than that, forecasters said.

Some thunderstorms are possible Wednesday evening in the region, the weather service said.

Elevated fire concerns will exist on Wednesday, with strong winds and dry fuels, according to the weather service. Burning is discouraged.

Today’s high will be near 63 with wind gusts as high as 24 mph, the weather service said.

Thursday’s high will drop about 20 degrees, as the cold front moves through, into the 50s, according to the weather service. Another cold front will move through on Saturday, leaving temperatures in the 40s.

Today, it will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 63 and a south wind of 9 to 13 mph, gusting as high as 24 mph, the weather service said.

Tonight, it will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 58 and a south southwest wind of 10 to 16 mph, gusting as high as 25 mph, according to the weather service.

Wednesday, it will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 72, the weather service said. It will be windy, with a south wind of 18 to 23 mph increasing to 26 to 31 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 50 mph.

Wednesday night, it will be mostly cloudy during the early evening, then gradually clearing, with a low of 37, according to the weather service. It will be windy, with a south southwest wind of 22 to 32 mph becoming west northwest 9 to 14 mph. Winds may gust as high as 55 mph.

Thursday, it will be sunny, with a high near 52, the weather service said. A west northwest wind of 5 to 7 mph will become calm in the afternoon.

High wind watch issued for Wednesday

A high wind watch will be in effect from Wednesday morning through Wednesday night, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

A warming trend will be in effect now through Wednesday, with record temperatures possible on Wednesday reaching 73, the weather service said.

There is a slight chance for storms Wednesday evening, according to the weather service. If storms are able to develop, some storms may produce severe, strong damaging southerly winds, according to the weather service.

The watch is in effect from 9 a.m. to midnight on Wednesday, but the highest wind gusts will be between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. Wednesday, the weather service stated.

Gusts in excess of 60 mph may be possible, strong enough to blow over power lines and trees, and posing a hazard to high-profile vehicles, the weather service said. Residents should secure loose objects in a safe location prior to the storm.

After a cold front moves through, temperatures will drop into the high 40s on Thursday, according to the weather service.

Looking ahead to the weather for Christmas, Dec. 25, the National Weather Service’s extended outlook says to expect above-normal temperatures and slightly below normal precipitation for that week.

Today, it will be sunny, with a high near 60, the weather service said. A southwest wind of 5 to 9 mph will become south southeast in the afternoon.

Tonight, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 44, according to the weather service. A south wind of 7 to 9 mph will gust as high as 21 mph.

Tuesday, there will be increasing clouds, with a high near 64, the weather service said. A south wind of 8 to 14 mph will gust as high as 29 mph.

Tuesday night, it will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 58, according to the weather service. A south wind of 10 to 17 mph will gust as high as 29 mph.

Wednesday, it will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 73, the weather service said. It will be windy, with a south wind of 18 to 23 mph increasing to 25 to 30 mph in the afternoon. Winds may gust up to 55 mph.

Wednesday night, there is a 20 percent chance of showers before midnight, according to the weather service. The low will be around 34, and it will be windy.
