Winter storm in forecast for New Year’s Eve

A New Year’s Eve storm is in the forecast from the National Weather Service.

According to the weather service, the storm will begin Friday night and continue through Saturday.

Temperatures will drop below freezing early Saturday morning and remain subfreezing through Monday afternoon, the weather service said. Wind chills Saturday night will range from minus 5 to 20 degrees.

Precipitation on Friday night, New Year’s Eve, will build in from the south, according to the weather service. A little rain before midnight will be followed by a slight chance of snow between midnight and 1 a.m., and then snow mixed with freezing rain after 1 a.m.

There will be a transition to all snow around noon Saturday, New Year’s Day, the weather service said. Three to five inches of snow is possible, according to the weather service.

Today, it will be mostly cloudy through mid-morning, then gradually clearing, with a high near 44, the weather service said. A calm wind will become southwest around 6 mph in the afternoon.

Tonight, there will be increasing clouds, with a low of 33 and a calm wind becoming south around 5 mph after midnight, according to the weather service.

Friday, it will be partly sunny, with a high near 55, the weather service said. A south southeast wind of 5 to 9 mph will become west in the afternoon. Winds may gust as high as 20 mph.

Friday night, New Year’s Eve, there is a slight chance of rain before midnight, then a slight chance of snow between midnight and 1 a.m. Snow is likely, possibly mixed with freezing rain, after 1 a.m., according to the weather service. The low will be around 20 with a north northeast wind of 7 to 13 mph, gusting to 21 mph. Little or no ice accumulation is expected. New snow accumulation of less than a half-inch is possible.

Saturday, New Year’s Day, there is a 70 percent chance of snow, mainly before 1 p.m., the weather service said. There will be patchy blowing snow after noon. The high will be near 21 with a north wind of 14 to 18 mph, gusting as high as 30 mph. New snow accumulation of three to five inches is possible.

Saturday night, there is a 40 percent chance of snow before 1 a.m., with a low around 0, according to the weather service.

Sunday, it will be sunny, with a high near 25, the weather service said.

Sunday night, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 16, according to the weather service.

Monday, it will be sunny, with a high near 44, the weather service said.

Monday night, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 29, according to the weather service.

Tuesday, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 45, the weather service said.

Tuesday night, it will be partly cloudy, with a low of 28, according to the weather service.

Wednesday, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 42, the weather service said.

Temperatures will reach a high of only 37 today, as a cloud cover is moving into the region from the southwest, according to the National Weather Service.

Some light snow may be possible north of the Kansas City area, with a slight chance for light freezing drizzle in central and north central areas of the state. However, there is no precipitation in the forecast for the Kansas City metropolitan area today.

Temperatures will warm to the mid-40s on Thursday and low 50s on Friday before turning colder on Friday night, New Year’s Eve, the weather service said. The coldest temperatures of the season so far will arrive.

Rain, snow and freezing rain is possible New Year’s Eve, with a low in the teens, according to the weather service.

On Saturday, New Year’s Day, there is a chance of snow, with a high of 19, the weather service said.

Today, it will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 37, the weather service said. An east northeast wind of 6 to 10 mph will gust as high as 20 mph.

Tonight, it will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 25, according to the weather service. A northeast wind of around 6 mph will become calm in the evening.

Thursday, it will be mostly cloudy, then gradually sunny, with a high near 45, the weather service said. A calm wind will become south southwest 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon.

Thursday night, it will be partly cloudy, with a low of 34 and a south wind of 6 mph, according to the weather service.

Friday, it will be partly sunny, with a high near 52, the weather service said. A south wind of 6 to 8 mph will become north in the afternoon.

Friday night, New Year’s Eve, there is an 80 percent chance of rain, snow and freezing rain before midnight, then snow, possibly mixed with freezing rain, according to the weather service. The low will be around 17. Between a quarter and half-inch of precipitation is possible.

Saturday, New Year’s Day, there is a 40 percent chance of snow, the weather service said. It will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 19.

Saturday night, it will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 2, according to the weather service.

Sunday, it will be sunny, with a high of 28, according to the weather service.

After some rain this morning, the weather will gradually clear and temperatures will reach 61, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

Colder temperatures – a high near 38 – are in the forecast for Wednesday as a cold front moves through the area, the weather service said.

There will be another warmup before a new cold front moves in on New Year’s Eve, according to the weather service.

Temperatures will drop to 25 on New Year’s Eve, Friday night, and the high on New Year’s Day, Jan. 1, will be around 27, according to the weather service.

The season’s first accumulating snowfall could be Friday night and Saturday, the weather service said, with a 40 percent chance of snow.

Look for very cold, subfreezing temperatures around New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day and Jan. 2, according to the weather service.

Today, there is a 20 percent chance of rain before 10 a.m., gradually clearing, with a high near 61, the weather service said. A south southeast wind of 9 to 11 mph will become northwest in the afternoon. Winds may gust as high as 22 mph.
