Man killed in collision with dump truck

A motorcyclist who was eastbound on U.S. 24 in Tonganoxie was killed in a collision on Tuesday with a dump truck.

The accident was at 9:36 a.m. Aug. 24 on U.S. 24 at Stone Creek Drive in Leavenworth County, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol report.

The dump truck exited a construction site and made a U-turn in the intersection of Stone Creek Drive against a red light, according to the trooper’s report.

The motorcycle tried to avoid the dump truck, but they collided. The motorcyclist had been wearing a helmet.

The driver of the motorcycle, a 34-year-old man from Tonganoxie, was taken to a hospital and died, according to the report. He was identified as William Guthrie.

Mill and overlay project begins on I-70 near 110th tonight

A mill and overlay project on I-70 from 110th Street to west of the I-435 bridges is beginning tonight, Aug. 23.

According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, the project includes asphalt pavement patching, concrete pavement patching and pavement marking.

Work will occur from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

According to a spokesman, message boards alerting motorists are in place, notifying the start of the project. Traffic will be controlled using portable message signs, arrow boards, signage and traffic cones. Lanes and ramps will be closed as necessary. The project is expected to be completed in early October.

Bettis Asphalt of Topeka is the contractor for the $1.7 million project.
