Good Samaritan dies while checking on injured driver

A Good Samaritan who was checking on an injured driver died about 3:04 a.m. Sunday, March 14, near the 5900 block of Nogard, according to a police spokesman.

Officers who responded to the accident found two separate crashes involving three vehicles and one fatality, the spokesman stated.

A sport utility vehicle traveling southbound on 59th at Nogard was struck by a sedan traveling north, the report stated. The sedan came to rest about one block away, and the driver and occupants fled on foot, the spokesman stated.

A Good Samaritan who stopped to check on the driver of the SUV was standing next to the vehicle when it was struck again, this time by a pickup, the spokesman stated. The impact of that crash killed the Good Samaritan, a female in her late 50s, the spokesman stated.

The driver of the SUV was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the spokesman stated.

The driver of the pickup was taken into custody, according to police.

The Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department Traffic Division is investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477), the spokesman stated.

Rollover accident reported on I-635

A rollover accident was reported at 7:05 p.m. Friday, March 12, on southbound I-635 near State Avenue, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol crash log.

A GMC Sierra truck was towing a Toyota xB on southbound I-635 and the truck was making several lane changes to make a U-turn, according to the trooper’s report.

An Acura MDX in the left lane sideswiped the GMC truck, according to the trooper’s report. After impact, the Acura left the roadway and overturned, the trooper’s report stated.

The driver of the Acura, a 34-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, man, had a possible minor injury and was taken to a hospital, the report stated. He was not wearing a safety restraint, according to the report.

The driver of the GMC Sierra, a 60-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, man, was not injured, the report stated. He was wearing a safety restraint.

The driver of the Toyota xB, a 26-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, man, was not injured, according to the report. He was wearing a safety restraint.

All the vehicles were towed away.

Kia hits semi on I-70 near 61st

A Kia Forte trying to change lanes hit a semi and then hit the median barrier on westbound I-70 near 61st Street around 8:22 a.m. Saturday.

The Forte was in the middle lane, where there also was a Peterbilt semi pulling two trailers, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol crash log.

The driver of the Forte tried to move into the left lane but struck the rear corner of the semi’s trailer, the trooper’s report stated. Then the Forte traveled onto the left shoulder, striking the median barrier wall, according to the report.

The driver of the Kia, a 24-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, woman, had a possible minor injury and was taken to a hospital, the trooper’s report stated. The Kia was towed away.

The driver of the Peterbilt truck, a 39-year-old man from Kansas City, Kansas, was not injured, according to the report.
