Solid pitching prevails for T-Bones in doubleheader

by Luke Schrock

The Kansas City T-Bones swept the doubleheader against the Lincoln Saltdogs, 4-2 and 1-0, thanks to some stellar defense.

Game one on Wednesday night at T-Bones Stadium was a slow start offensively until the sixth inning when Lincoln put up a run to break the silence. Cody Regis was responsible for the first run with an RBI double to score Christian Ibarra.

The T-Bones weren’t far behind as they put up four to answer, and that is all they needed to put the game away.

Chris Colabello hit an RBI single to score Dylan Tice, tying the game at one. Casey Gillaspie singled as well, scoring Roy Morales; then Omar Carrizales got his first hit and RBI with the T-Bones with a hard-hit double to bring in Chris Colabello.

Christian Correa brought the finishing touch to the onslaught, getting hit by a pitch to score Casey Gillaspie.

Winning pitcher Akeem Bostick (2-0) let up his first run in a T-Bones uniform and earned his first quality start since joining the team. Bostick now has a 0.82 ERA after two starts. Hunter Smith came in the seventh to close out the game, letting up Lincoln’s second run but holding on for his second save of the season.

Losing Pitcher Ricky Knapp (4-9) went the full game, pitching six innings with only one walk but letting go eight hits on four runs. Knapp pitched a good ballgame until the sixth inning hit, and Colabello started what a four-run bottom of the sixth.

Game two was quiet overall in the 1-0 win over the Saltdogs with eight total hits between the two teams.

Winning pitcher Jose Mesa Jr. (3-2) earned his third straight win in his last four starts. Mesa finished the night with six innings, three hits, two walks and eight strikeouts.

Robert Calvano came in in the seventh and completed the combined shutout with no problems— one strikeout and no hits. Losing Pitcher Tyler Anderson put in three good innings for the Saltdogs, giving up only three hits and no runs.

KCK is now tied with Sioux City for second place after Sioux City took down the southern division first place Cleburne Railroaders 5-3.

Walk-off thriller knocks T-Bones out of wild card lead

by Luke Schrock

Sioux City, Iowa – The Kansas City T-Bones (47-39) lost their second-place spot in the Southern Division in Tuesday’s 3-2 walk-off loss to the Sioux City Explorers (48-39), who now take second place.

Dylan Baker went 7.2 innings against the Explorers, only giving up one run in the bottom of the first. After the first he was lights out until he was taken out of the game in the bottom of the eighth for Carlos Diaz (1-2) to shut the door on the eighth inning, but two walks would kill the T-Bones in the end.

After Diaz walked Dexture McCall and Justin Felix, Diaz would let up two straight singles from Sebastian Zawada and Dylan Kelly. Kelly would be the final blow in the first walk-off loss the T-Bones have faced this season.

Carlos Sierra was able to hold off the T-Bones until the sixth inning, when he was replaced by Nate Gercken in the bottom of the sixth. Sierra and Gercken were the only ones who let up runs to Kansas City, and Jose Velez (2-0) was awarded the win after completing the one run comeback.

The T-Bones were down 1-0 to the Explorers for most of the game. Chris Colabello broke the silence in the sixth inning to score Shawn O’Malley and to tie the game at 1-1. The next inning, in the top of the seventh, a Christian Correa RBI scored Casey Gillaspie to take the lead 2-1.

Kansas City returns home for the next three days to take on the Lincoln Saltdogs, who are currently out of the wildcard race but who could spoil playoff hopes for the T-Bones.

Kansas City will be in action tonight starting game one at 5:05 p.m. and game two at 7:05 p.m. at JustBats Field at T-Bones Stadium in Kansas City, Kansas. Catch all the action live on the T-Bones Broadcast Network at http://mixlr.com/t-bones-baseball/.

T-Bones’ winning streak snapped at 12

by Luke Schrock

The Kansas City T-Bones’ (47-38) bats went cold Monday night, allowing the Sioux City Explorers to creep back to a half game behind the T-Bones and give Kansas City its first shutout loss of the season, 5-0.

Christian Binford (4-3) got the loss after four innings pitched and a total of nine hits let up. Sioux City took Binford down the left field line twice to account for three runs in the bottom of the second.

Binford ended the night with a positive note of only throwing one walk, which was his 12th since signing with the T-Bones on June 16.

Winning pitcher Sam Held (2-0) for the Explorers threw his first start since last season after being a long reliever for Sioux City. The experiment worked well with Held’s final line being eight hits, no runs and six punchouts in five innings.

The T-Bones had 11 hits, almost tying Sioux City, which had 12. Kansas City had a total of 14 left on base with seven in the first three innings alone.

Sioux City was efficient with moving runners, using big hits to left field, going down the left field line, and singles to threaten the KCK defense. Six of the nine innings started with the lead-off man aboard with either a walk or a single.

The Explorers saw the ball out of Christian Binford’s hand in the second inning, giving Sebastian Zawada one RBI, Kyle Wren a 2-RBI double, and Nate Samson an RBI double.

Andrew DiPiazza got his professional debut, starting his first inning in the fifth by loading the bases with no outs, but he found a way to get three straight outs to end the threat. His next inning would be smooth, going three up, three down in the sixth. Smith and Korson slowed the Explorer offense by only letting in one run to keep Sioux City at five runs.

Kansas City continues to hold the second-place spot for another day, despite the loss. KC is now four games behind Cleburne in the playoff race, and the Explorers continue to nip at the heels of the T-Bones going into Tuesday’s rubber match. The game will be on the T-Bones Broadcast Network, http://mixlr.com/t-bones-baseball/.
