T-Bones comeback falls one run short

The Kansas City T-Bones wrapped up their first long road trip of the season, going 5-2 but dropping the final game of the four-game series at Sioux City 5-4 Thursday night.

Sioux City took a 1-0 lead with the ball never leaving the infield the first inning. Louis Durango scored on a fielder’s choice from Nate Samson off T-Bones starter Barrett Astin for the early lead.

Sioux City would take a 3-0 lead, scoring two more in the fourth. Dexture McCall drove one run in with a fielder’s choice to second, and the second run would score on an error by short stop Dylan Tice.

The T-Bones cut the lead to 3-1 with Tice slamming a single to right to score Dexter Kjerstad, who singled to start the inning off Sioux City starter Justin Vernia in the top of the sixth.

Sioux City came back to score another run on an RBI single from Jay Baum to get the run back in the bottom of the sixth to make it 4-1.

For the second night in a row, the T-Bones made a seventh inning comeback, but Sioux City was able to score one run in the eighth to provide the difference.

Kansas City trailed 4-1 going into the top of the seventh, but they tied the game on a three-run home run to left field by Dexter Kjerstad. It was the same spot he hit one on Tuesday night to help the T-Bones come back late in the ninth.

Julio Eusebio took over for Astin in the seventh.

Durango reached base on a one-out walk and was followed by Michael Lang. Lang lined the ball to short, and Kansas City looked to have Durango doubled up at first, but the throw was high and got away, allowing Durango to go to second.

Francisco Gracesqui walked Austin and then gave up an infield single to Nate Samson to score Durango to provide the difference.

Ryan Flores (1-0) worked 2.1 to get the win—including dodging a bases-loaded situation in the seventh— while Eusebio (0-1) was charged with the loss.

The T-Bones are 8-5 while the Explorers are now 10-4.

Nine-run seventh propels T-Bones to 10-2 win

After two nights of wild baseball games, it appeared that a good old-fashioned pitcher’s duel was on tap for Wednesday night at Mercy Field at Lewis and Clark Park in Sioux City, Iowa.

For six innings the two clubs were locked in a close game with the score 2-1 Sioux City going into the seventh. The T-Bones then flipped the offensive switch on, scoring 10 runs and sending up 13 batters, helping give Kansas City a 10-2 win over Sioux City.

Sioux City starter Keith Picht worked six innings and was done for the X’s, giving up only a solo home run to Nick Torres in the second.

The home club turned to the bullpen in the seventh, looking to right hander Parker Markel. He promptly hit T-Bones lead-off man Angel Rosa.

Rosa then stole second with Dexter Kjerstad at the plate. Kjerstad hit a sinking liner to right that Michael Lang made a great sliding catch on to record the first out of the inning. Johnny Davis reached base on an infield single to put runners at the corners.

Sioux City went to the pen once again, bringing in righty Ryan Horstman. Keith Curcio then drove a 3-2 pitch from Horstman to right center with Davis running, scoring Rosa from third while Davis raced all the way around from first to take the lead, 3-2.

Dylan Tice singled after the second out of the inning to put runners again at first and third. Torres then drove in Curcio to up the lead to 4-2.

Cal Towey then doubled to clear the bases, scoring Tice and Torres, and it was 6-2 T-Bones.

Adrian Nieto reached base on an error by shortstop Nate Samson, but Towey never slowed with two outs and scored easily to make it 7-2. Angel Rosa, in his second at bat of the inning, walked and was followed by Kjerstad, who also drew a walk. That would be all for Horstman as Sioux City went to the pen again.

Right hander Geoff Broussard took over for the X’s with the bases loaded. Johnny Davis then hit a ball way down the left field line to wipe the bases clean as he sped around the bases for a triple to make it 10-2 Kansas City.

Luis Paula (1-1) gave up two runs in the first inning but worked a quality start for Kansas City. Paula left the game with two outs in the seventh with a undisclosed injury.

Sam Street worked 1.1 while Jackson Lowery closed out the ninth for the T-Bones. Markel (0-1) was charged with the loss.

Kansas City will wrap up the club’s seven-game road trip on Thursday night with game four of the four-game series. The game can be heard online on the T-Bones Broadcast Network with the first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. in Sioux City.

T-Bones win, 7-6

A night after a heartbreaking loss and with Sioux City (9-3) in control most of the night, the Kansas City T-Bones (7-4) looked like they might be in trouble Tuesday night at Mercy Field at Lewis and Clark Park, Sioux City, Iowa.

The T-Bones, trailing by four runs in the ninth, scored five runs capped by a Dexter Kjerstad three-run blast to left to win the game 7-6 over the Explorers.

The ninth inning seemed so far off while Sioux City starter Taylor Jordan was retiring 15 T-Bones batters in a row.

The right-hander and former big leaguer gave up one hit through seven innings. The T-Bones did not have a runner reach after a leadoff single in the second all the way through one out in the eighth.

Dylan Tice hit a ground ball to second base that Jose Sermo let skip through his legs for the first base runner since the second.

While Jordan was holding the T-Bones offense off the board and bases, Sioux City scored a pair of runs for him in the bottom of the first. Luis Durango and Michael Lang each singled off Hunter Adkins of Kansas City.

Adkins attempted to pick off Durango at second and threw to center field to allow both runners to move up a base. After a pop out to short, Nate Samson drove in both runs for a 2-0 lead. Sioux City took a 4-0 lead in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Daniel Jackson and an RBI single from Durango.

In the fifth, what looked like a possible knockout punch came from Samson. Lang was hit by a pitch to start the innings. Then the veteran shortstop drove home Lang on an RBI single to make it 5-0 X’s.

In the eighth Kansas City finally got going against Jordan. Dylan Tice reached on an error from Jose Sermo and was followed by a single from Zach Walters. Nick Torres then knocked in Tice to cut the lead to 5-1 with a single.

Cal Towey then singled, scoring Walters, but a good throw from right fielder Michael Lang got Torres at the plate to keep the game 5-2 Sioux City.

In the bottom of the eighth, Jose Sermo hit a solo homer to left off Pasquale Mazzoccoli to give Sioux City what looked like a huge insurance run. Geoff Broussard took over for Jordan in the top of the ninth.

Dylan Tice doubled to left center to start the rally. Broussard struck out Zach Walters, but then walked Nick Torres and Cal Towey to load the bases. Adrian Nieto singled through the “five-six” hole to score two runs and make it 6-4.

Tyler Fallwell was summoned into the game for Sioux City. The right hander struck out Angel Rosa but then gave up the three-run eventual game winning blast by Dexter Kjerstad to make it 7-6.

Francisco Gracesqui retired the first two he faced then allowed a two out-walk to Nate Samson. The left-hander then retired Jay Baum on a pop fly by the T-Bones first base dugout that Cal Towey made a sliding play running out of room in the field ending the game.

Mazzoccoli (2-0) was the relief winner while Fallwell was charged with the loss. Gracesqui earned his second save. Kansas City will continue the club’s seven-game road trip Wednesday night with game three of the four-game series. The game can be heard online on the T-Bones Broadcast Network with the first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. in Sioux City.
