KC cooks AirHogs, 6-4

The Hogs went a bit wild in Kansas City Tuesday evening, but in the end the T-Bones took the piggies to market, defeating the Texas AirHogs 6-4.

KC led the ball game by three runs early in the game and had to battle back to put the pigs back in their pen.

Kansas City grabbed three runs on three hits in the bottom of the first.

T-Bone newcomer Ryan Brett started with a walk from AirHogs starting pitcher Cody White. Colin Walsh singled and Noah Perio Jr then cracked a ground ball down the right field line past the first baseman to score Brett for the first run of the game.

The next batter, Adrian Nieto dropped a ball into left field, sending both Walsh and Cunningham racing for home and scoring another two runs, giving the T-Bones a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the second, Han Xiao singled down the middle, later went on to steal second and then scored on an RBI single by Greg Golson to make the score 3-1.

Keith Curcio, in his first at-bat in the bottom of the second, slammed his ninth home run and 43rd RBI of the season halfway up the grass berm outside the right field fence.

In the top of the third, Stewart Ijames reached on an error by the second baseman, followed by back-to-back singles from Casio Grider and Dillon Thomas to load the bases.

Thomas’ single hit T-Bones starting pitcher Barrett Astin in the lower body, causing him to be relieved by RHP Pasquale Mazzaccoli.

Han Xiao racked up his second and third RBIs of the game when he lined down the middle, in a similar spot to where he hit the ball the previous inning, to score Ijames and Grider and put runners at the corners. Mazzacolli prevented any more runs from scoring, striking out center fielder Greg Golson.

The Hogs got happy in the fourth, with back-to-back singles from Jesse Baker and Liang Pei, followed by a fielder’s choice and a Casio Grider double down the left-field line that allowed Texas to tie the game 4-4.

Texas didn’t hog tie Kansas City for long though. On a two-two pitch with no outs in the sixth, Colin Walsh hit a long ball over the right field fence to let the T-Bones re-gain the lead 5-4.

KC made the lead a bit more solid in the bottom of the seventh.

With two outs, Colin Walsh hit a ground ball to shortstop Casio Grider, who bobbled it for an error and allowed Logan Moon, to score. Moon had reached on a walk, advanced on a walk to Todd Cunningham and moved to third when Cunningham flied out.

In addition to Pasquale Mazzoccoli, Jackson Lowery, Kevin Hill, Marcus Crescentini and Cody Winiarski worked in relief of KC starter Barrett Astin. Combined, T-Bones pitchers fanned a total of 10 AirHogs batters.

Jackson Lowery (3-1) gets the win for KC and Cody White (0-1) is charged with the loss. Cody Winiarski (1-1) racked up his eighth save of the season.

The T-Bones, now 48-26 on the season, look to sweep the three-game homestand against the AirHogs (19-55) Wednesday evening at 7:05 p.m.

T-Bones win 4-2 over AirHogs

Coming off a three-game losing streak, the Kansas City T-Bones (47-26) took care of the Texas AirHogs (19-54) 4-2.

Joe Filomeno and the Kansas City bullpen were light outs pitching two consecutive scoreless innings to close out the AirHogs on Monday night in Kansas City.

In the top of the first, Stewart Ijames ripped a lead-off home run to give the AirHogs an early 1-0 lead.

Kansas City didn’t let the AirHogs enjoy their lead long, adding two runs in the second. With two outs, the T-Bones bats came alive starting with a single by Alay Lago. Keith Curcio followed Lago with a screaming double to put runners at second and third.

A crucial passed ball by Zhang Toe (0-1) sent Lago racing home from third to tie the game at one apiece. Curcio advanced to third. Back-to-back walks by Logan Moon and Tucker Pennell loaded the bases for newly acquired Ryan Brett. With two strikes and two outs, Brett hit his first RBI single of his T-Bones career putting Kansas City ahead 2-1.

In the fourth, Curcio reached first on a 10-pitch at bat to swing the momentum in the T-Bones favor. With two outs, Tucker Pennell trotted to first after being hit by a pitch to put Curcio in scoring position.

Brett poked a ball out to the left field that was mishandled, allowing Curcio to score from second. Pennell raced for home following the error by the left fielder but was tagged out to end the inning. The T-Bones extended their lead, 3-1 after four innings.

Texas cut into the Kansas City lead in the sixth thanks to a key error. After a Ijames walk, Casio Grider reached first after Colin Walsh sailed the ball over the first baseman’s head.

Ijames reached third on the error. Dillon Thomas hit a dribbler resulting in an out, but scored Ijames from third, putting the AirHogs within one run of Kansas City heading into the seventh inning.

Another two-out rally in the eighth secured a T-Bones win. Lago hit a double to put a runner in scoring position for Kansas City.

A well-hit ball up the middle by Logan Moon sent Lago racing home. The T-Bones went on to win 4-2, taking game one of a three-game series against the AirHogs.

Tommy Collier (8-3) was dominate once again pitching seven and one third innings allowing two runs, one being earned, on three hits. With the win, Collier improves to a team-high eight wins on the season.

Zhang Tao was credited as the losing pitcher, throwing five innings allowing five hits, three runs, and three walks.

With the win, the T-Bones break out of their three-game slump improving to 47-26 on the season. Kansas City has fallen out of the race for first place in the South Division sitting nine games back of the Sioux City Explorers (56-17), but stay in playoff contention extending their lead over the Wichita Wingnuts (44-29) by three games.

The AirHogs have lost their fifth-straight game falling to 9-1 over their last 10 games. Texas looks to finish its season strong with a new ensemble of foreign player fighting for playing time.
