T-Bones set to take on Explorers in playoffs tonight in KCK

The Kansas City T-Bones made the playoffs over the weekend, and the first game of the playoffs is scheduled at 7:15 p.m. tonight at T-Bones Stadium in Kansas City, Kansas.

The T-Bones will face the Sioux City Explorers in playoff games Tuesday and Wednesday nights in Kansas City, Kansas.

The T-Bones are having their winningest season ever, setting a club record at 62 wins.

Todd Cunningham, a T-Bones outfielder named to the American Association All-Star team on Monday, is one of the bright spots in the T-Bones’ season.

Cunningham has a .338 batting average and 17 stolen bases this year. He led the league with the top batting average for a portion of the season.

The T-Bones clinched a playoff spot Sunday and will take on the Sioux City Explorers at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at T-Bones Stadium in Kansas City, Kansas.

Outfielder Todd Cunningham was one of nine position players named as an American Association All-Star Monday.

Cunningham consistently led the league with the No. 1 batting average for a good part of the season.

He finished the year second with a .338 batting average and 17 stolen bases. An all-star game will not be played this season, but the contest will return next season.

Also Monday, the Gary SouthShore RailCats snatched away a 2-0 lead from Kansas City to come back and win it 3-2 in the final game of the regular season, an away game in Gary.

However, the T-Bones end the regular season setting a franchise record for wins at 62, surpassing the previous record of 58.

The game was scoreless going into a 40-minute rain delay in the bottom of the third.

The game resumed, and in the fourth Todd Cunningham doubled to left, then Alay Lago doubled to left to drive him in for the first run of the game and a 1-0 lead over Gary.

In the top of the sixth, the T-Bones added to their lead. Ryan Brett doubled to center, advanced on a Mason Davis fly ball and was brought home by a Todd Cunningham RBI single to right to increase put Kansas City up 2-0.

But in the bottom of the sixth, the RailCats doused the T-Bones’ hope for a shutout.

Randy Santiesteban doubled to left, then Alex Crosby hit an RBI single to left that put Gary on the board trailing KC 2-1. Andy Paz, who reached base by being hit by a pitch, later scored on an RBI single to right by K.C. Huth – tying the game 2-2.

In the seventh, the RailCats grabbed a 3-2 lead as D.K. Carey, who walked to lead off the inning, scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Colin Willis.

The lead was enough for Gary to win the game, with a final of 3-2.

T-Bones clinch playoff spot; defeat Gary in 16 innings

The Kansas City T-Bones have clinched a playoff spot for the first time since 2010 and will take on the Sioux City Explorers at T-Bones Stadium at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

Tickets are available for $8 at tbonesbaseball.com or by visiting the Box Office, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. hours on Labor Day.

On Sunday, Kansas City trailed most of the ball game against the Gary SouthShore RailCats, but came back victorious 3-2 in 16 innings.

Gary started it off in the bottom of the second, when Tilman Pugh smashed a solo home run to left-center field to give Gary a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, the RailCats added to their lead as Randy Santiesteban doubled off the center field wall and was pushed home by a Tilman Pugh RBI double.

Gary maintained the 2-0 lead until the sixth when Mason Davis doubled to center and scored on a Noah Perio Jr. sacrifice fly.

In the eighth, Ryan Brett got aboard with a single, then moved to third on a single by Davis. Perio Jr. then hit an infield single that scored Brett and evened up the game 2-2.

Gary threatened to take the lead a couple of times in extra innings but was shut down by T-Bones reliever Pasquale Mazzoccoli.

In the 14th, the RailCats had the bases loaded with two out when Mazzoccoli struck out Cole Fabio. In the 15th, Gary led off with a triple by Ronnie Mitchell, but Mazzoccoli struck out two other batters and Andy Paz lined to right field for the third out.

The T-Bones took advantage of that good fortune in the 16th when Davis crushed a go-ahead solo home run down the right field line to put Kansas City up 3-2.

The RailCats were unable to rally a run in the bottom of the 16th and the T-Bones chalked up their 62nd win of the season 3-2 over Gary. The two teams are back at it again at 1:10 p.m. Monday in Gary.
