T-Bones drop series opener to the Dogs

by Sophie Darting

It was another heartbreaking loss for the Kansas City T-Bones as they fell, 11-5, to the Chicago Dogs in the first game of a three-game homestand on Friday.

The T-Bones had the lead until the eighth inning when the Dogs put up a four-spot to go ahead by three runs, and Chicago did not relinquish the lead.

Olathe-native Jon Perrin (0-0) got the starting nod for Kansas City and produced his first quality start as a member of the T-Bones. Perrin worked through seven innings, giving up three runs off of five hits while striking out eight batsmen.

After giving up a pair of runs to the Dogs (13-6) in the top of the fourth, he settled in, striking out the side in the sixth inning, including the last five of six batters he faced.

The T-Bones (9-11) started well in the bottom of the first off of Chicago starter Austin Wright (0-3). Kansas City batted around the lineup in the bottom of the frame and scored their 24th and 25th runs in the first inning this season, which is the most runs that they have scored in any inning on the year.

Ryan Brett led off the inning with an infield single and scored on a base hit to left field by Dylan Tice, making it Tice’s first RBI as a member of the T-Bones.

Darnell Sweney followed up with a line single to left field, which gave Kansas City runners on the corners with nobody out.

After Daniel Nava drew a walk to load the bases, Casey Gillaspie stepped up to the plate and roped an RBI-single into left to make it 2-0.

In his 2019 T-Bones debut, Danny Mars delivered with the bases loaded and two outs. He lined a two-RBI single to left field and extended the T-Bones’ lead to 4-0.

Chicago started to slowly chip away at Kansas City’s lead. A solo homer by Tony Rosselli in the top of the second got the Dogs on the board, 4-1. They responded again in the top of the fourth off of a pair of RBI-singles by Tony Rosselli and former member of the Chicago Cubs, Carlos Zambrano, to make the T-Bones lead only one run.

The trouble for the T-Bones began in the top of the eighth inning after Perrin was pulled from the game and Robert Calvano (0-1) was brought in to pitch in relief. The Dogs tagged Calvano for four runs, highlighted by a two-run double by Zambrano, and broke the game open while taking a 7-4 lead.

Kansas City tried to make up for the runs they lost in the bottom of the eighth after Gillaspie, Christian Correa, and Mars got on to load the bases with two outs. However, the T-Bones were unable to bring any of the runners home.

Chicago put the game out of reach and added on four more runs in the top of the ninth off another two-run double, this time by Trey Vavra, an RBI-single by Keon Barnum, and an RBI-ground out by Tony Rosselli.

Ramsey Romano launched his second home run of the year into left field to open up the bottom of the ninth and bring the T-Bones within six runs. With his home run Friday, Romano now owns a six-game hitting streak.

A two-out base hit by Sweeney and a follow-up walk by Nava kept the inning alive for the T-Bones, but ultimately, Kansas City was unable to recover or score any more runs and fell to the Dogs in the first game of the series.

The T-Bones continue the three-game homestand against the Chicago Dogs on Saturday, June 8, with a first pitch time of 7:05 p.m. It will be “Salute to Heroes” Night, with a backpack giveaway and post-game fireworks. For more information, see www.tbonesbaseball.com.

Frustrations continue for T-Bones as KC drops series finale

by Alex Dean

The T-Bones (8-11) struggles continued Thursday afternoon as they were unable to force a series split against the Milwaukee Milkmen (10-11), dropping the final game 5-3 in Kokomo, Indiana.

Despite having more hits than Milwaukee on the day, the T-Bones were unable to capitalize on them as they left a total of 12 runners on base.

The T-Bones got off to a good start, striking first on an RBI single by Shawn O’Malley that brought home Darnell Sweeney in the top of the third. However, they were unable to hold that lead, as Teodoro Martinez answered with a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning.

The Milkmen added one run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead.

A rally in the eighth by Kansas City, where Roy Morales and Ramsey Romano both drove in a run, proved to be too little too late, as the Milkmen added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth and Myles Smith (6 saves) shut the door in the ninth.

The main bright spot for the T-Bones came from spot starter Kevin Hamann (0-0, 6.00 ERA), who hurled 3.2 innings of one-run ball after finding out he would be starting just hours before game time. After that, it was a group effort to get the T-Bones to the finish line, with Jackson Lowery, Nick Lee and Robert Calvano each coming in relief for KC.

The T-Bones couldn’t do much against Milwaukee starter Zac Westcott (1-2, 6.00 ERA), who threw five innings of one-run ball and picked up his first win of the season. Both teams struggled with giving up walks. However, Milwaukee was able to escape damage for the most part.

Frustrations reached a boiling point for the T-Bones in the bottom of the sixth, as a balk called on Lee led to both Joe Calfapietra and Marc Magliaro being ejected after arguing the call. The Milkmen scored two runs in the inning.

The T-Bones will come home for a three-game home stand against the Chicago Dogs (12-6) before heading back out on the road.

The T-Bones Broadcast Network, http://mixlr.com/t-bones-baseball/, will provide coverage, with the first pitch at 7:05 p.m. Friday night in Super Hero night. The pre-game will feature a performance by the Falcon Skydiving Team.

T-Bones lose to Milwaukee

by Harry Welsh

The T-Bones (8-10) fell Wednesday to the Milwaukee Milkmen (9-11).

Dustin Hurlbutt (0-3) started on the mound for the T-Bones. Hurlbutt gave the T-Bones a full five innings, but he struggled throughout. Milwaukee pitcher, T.J. House (3-0) went for seven, giving up only two runs and securing the win.

The Milkmen offense remained hot Wednesday, scoring three earned runs in the bottom of the first.

The T-Bones rallied to score a run in the top of the second, thanks to a Ramsey Romano hit-by-a-pitch RBI. Romano continued his day with an RBI double, scoring Dylan Tice in the top of the fourth.

The Milkmen led 3-2 after the fourth. The T-Bones’ comeback hopes were spoiled in the bottom of the fifth, giving up another four runs. The middle innings have been a significant weak spot to start the year as the T-Bones have given up 39 runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth this season alone.

The top of the sixth offered a glimmer of hope for the T-Bones with a lead-off double from Christian Correa, before three consecutive outs, stranding Correa at third.

Nick Lee entered the game in the bottom of the sixth to relieve Dustin Hurlbutt. After pitching one inning and the game being delayed half an hour, Lee was relieved by Ramsey Romano.

The Milkmen have established themselves well against the T-Bones this season, leading the overall series 4-2. Kansas City experienced early success this season before some roster changes. Since the changes, the T-Bones have struggled, going 3-7 in the last 10 games.

Despite having nine hits — two more than the Milkmen — the T-Bones could not convert. The T-Bones fell to the Milkmen 7-2 and will play Thursday, hoping to split the series.

The T-Bones will battle the Milwaukee Milkmen for the fourth day in a row on Thursday, June 6. After the Milkmen series, the T-Bones will return home for a three-game series with the Chicago Dogs.

Follow the action on the T-Bones Broadcast Network, http://mixlr.com/t-bones-baseball/, with a first pitch of 12:05 p.m.
