Byron Wiley has been struggling at the plate in the early part of this season, but he unleashed himself Tuesday night in Kansas City’s 4-2 win over Wichita at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

Just three pitches into the game, Wiley homered to left field, giving Kansas City an early 1-0 lead off Wichita’s starting pitcher Jon Link (0-1).

Wichita struggled against T-Bones starter Daniel Barone until the fifth inning, when the Wingnuts scored two runs on four hits. Chris McMurray and Carlo Testa both hit RBI singles, giving Wichita a 2-1 lead. Barone left after 6 2/3 innings in which he allowed two runs on six hits and struck out a season-high seven.

Link gave up two more runs in the top of the eighth, when Robby Kuzdale led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a double by Wiley. Then, with one out, Bryan Sabatella and Nick Giarraputo both hit RBI singles, scoring both Kuzdale and Wiley.

Wiley ended the game with a single shy of the cycle, after he added a triple in the ninth inning that scored Brian Erie and gave Kansas City an insurance run.

The T-Bones (3-3) and Wingnuts (4-2) conclude this Kansas Turnpike Showdown on Wednesday night at 7:05 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

The Kansas City T-Bones jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first two at bats, but eventually fell 9-8 to the Wichita Wingnuts on Monday night.

The first six of seven reached base for Kansas City in the first inning and scored four times, capped off by a two-run double from Danny Richar that scored Bryan Sabatella and Nick Giarraputo. Robby Kuzdale connected with the T-Bones’ first home run of season in the second inning, which stretched the lead to 5-0.

Starting pitcher Justin D’Alessandro (0-1) hit trouble in the second and fourth innings, allowing nine runs — eight earned. D’Alessandro had trouble locating the strike zone, surrendering five walks and four hits. The Wingnuts capitalized on back-to-back walks in the second inning and tied the game with five runs, and four more in the fourth.

Down four runs in the eighth inning, the T-Bones tried to work magic. Trailing 9-5, Kansas City scored three runs, including two from a homer by Richar that pulled the T-Bones to within one at 9-8.

In the ninth inning the Wingnuts went to right handed closer Matt Nevarez (3) who converted his third save in as many chances despite hitting two batters. The game ended when the T-Bones tried to double steal with David Espinosa and Sabatella, but Sabatella was thrown out at second.

Wichita starting pitcher Alan Williams (1-0), who gave up five runs, six hits and walked four, picked up the win.

The T-Bones (2-3) and Wingnuts (4-1) continue the three-game series Tuesday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita at 7:05.

The Kansas City T-Bones had their bats silenced in the series finale Sunday, falling 8-2 to the Lincoln Saltdogs at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan.

After scoring six runs in Saturday’s win, the T-Bones were held hitless through six innings off starting pitcher Zachary Varce (1-0). With the no-hit bid intact, the Saltdogs called reliever T.J. Boseman out of the bullpen in the top of the seventh.

Left fielder Byron Wiley roped a leadoff single up the middle for Kansas City’s lone hit and was brought home by a bases loaded walk. The T-Bones were walked 14 times, three of which came in their one-run seventh inning. That set a new club record for walks in the game. The previous was 12 against Schaumburg in July 2004.

Bobby Shore (0-1) was roughed up in his T-Bones debut. He went four innings and gave up six runs, five of which were earned, off eight hits.

The Saltdogs got things going early, scoring three runs off four hits in the first inning. They scored in all but three innings of the game.

With the loss, the T-Bones wrap up the four game homestand with a 2-2 record before heading to Wichita for a three-game series beginning Monday night. They return home Thursday, May 22, against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks for another four-game home stand.
