T-Bones offense comes back to avoid series sweep

by Luke Schrock

In the seventh inning, the T-Bones rallied to come from behind and defeat the Gary SouthShore RailCats 4-2 on Sunday in Gary, Indiana.

The T-Bones, 21-20, have a day off Monday before starting a home series on Tuesday with the Sioux Falls Canaries. There will be post-game fireworks on July 3 and 4 at T-Bones Stadium in Kansas City, Kansas.

On Sunday, the RailCats started a true rookie, Seth Hougesen (0-0), who went four innings in his first professional start.

Hougesen allowed only one hit with two walks and a strikeout to conclude his four innings of work. Robbie Coursel took over in the fifth inning and had similar success, only giving up one run on three hits.

However, the tables turned quickly once Jack Alkire came in the middle of the 7th inning to face Ramsey Romano.

Tommy Collier started for the T-Bones and got his fourth quality start of the season throwing six total innings, one earned run, and four strikeouts. The T-Bones went through five pitchers to conclude the series. Besides Collier, Magliaro and Diaz were the only other pitchers that went a full inning. Diaz earned his third save of the season.

Romano started the scoring for the T-Bones, erasing a 1-0 deficit courtesy of a Colin Willis RBI single in the first inning. Romano reached first on a ground ball to shortstop Marcus Mooney, scoring Shawn O’Malley who singled to start the 7th inning.

Dylan Tice kept the ball rolling by driving in Ramsey Romano with an RBI single to make it a 2-1 ball game. Then the hot Daniel Nava, who had a two-game homerun streak entering the game, hit a two-run single to score both Danny Mars and Dylan Tice.

The 4th place Sioux Falls Canaries, who are playing the T-Bones for the first time this season, visit Kansas City, Kansas, from Tuesday through Thursday. Christian Binford is the probable starting pitcher for game one of the homestand, currently sporting a record of 1-0 and an ERA of 3.14 of three appearances.

The upcoming homestand will feature two straight days of post-game fireworks for July 3 and 4 in honor of Independence Day at T-Bones Stadium.

The RailCats got on the board first with a lead of 4-0, in the bottom of the first. Alex Crosby reached on an infield single then scored on a RBI single from Will Savage. Gary would load the bases and score three more on two bases-loaded walks and a hit-by-a-pitch from T-Bones starter Erik Manoah.

Kansas City scored in the fourth inning with Dylan Tice hitting a single and advancing to first. Then later in the inning, Christian Correa advanced to first on an error by the shortstop Marcus Mooney, which allowed Tice to score, making it 4-1.

The RailCats answered in the fifth with a home run by Colin Willis, making the score, 5-1. However, the T-Bones fought back in the top of the sixth with a home run by Daniel Nava, and it was 5-2. It was Nava’s second home run of the series.

In the seventh, a single by Danny Mars allowed Shawn O’Malley to score as Kansas City cut the lead to 5-3. In the bottom of the seventh, RailCats Colin Willis hit a triple. Then, Gimenez hit a single to right field, scoring Willis and making the final score 6-3.

Missed chances spoil night for T-Bones

by Alex Dean

The Kansas City T-Bones (20-19) couldn’t overcome a three-run first by the Gary SouthShore RailCats (17-21), as Kansas City struggled to capitalize on a number of opportunities and lost 3-2 on Friday night in Gary, Indiana.

KC had its share of chances early to put runs on the board, but the T-Bones left six runners on base over the first three frames, failing to score in the early innings against Gary starter Justin Sinibaldi (1-2). The T-Bones left the bases loaded with just one out in the second.

A three-run first for Gary, with RBI singles by Andy DeJesus and Raymond Jones proved to be all they needed on offense to squeeze out a win.

The T-Bones finally cashed in and got one back in the top of the fourth when Dylan Tice beat out an infield chopper to bring home Mason Davis.

Daniel Nava tacked on another run with his first home run of the season in the seventh. However, that was it for KC as the T-Bones threatened in the ninth but did not score.

One of the bright spots of the night came from starting pitcher Henry Owens (1-1). At one point recording seven straight strikeouts, he finished with 10 on the night, allowing three runs over five innings of work.

The bullpen worked three scoreless innings on a combined effort from Marc Magliaro and Robert Calvano.

A diving play by Danny Mars saved a run in the fifth, keeping it close for the T-Bones. Yet the offense couldn’t produce with runners in scoring position, leaving 11 total runners on base.

The T-Bones will continue their three-game set against Gary at 6:10 p.m. Saturday, June 29, in Gary, Indiana, as Erik Manoah Jr. (2-1) will get the start for the T-Bones. The game will be on the T-Bones Broadcast Network at http://mixlr.com/t-bones-baseball/.
