Sadler, T-Bones win first of twin-bill

Ray Sadler led the way for Kansas City as the T-Bones defeated St. Paul 5-2 in game one of a doubleheader that included a 1-hour, 53-minute rain delay Friday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan.

Sadler got things started for Kansas City in the second inning, tripling off the centerfield wall. Nick Schwaner then grounded out, scoring Sadler and giving the T-Bones an early 1-0 lead.

The Saints appeared primed for a big inning in the fourth. Angelo Songco singled and Jake Taylor walked before Joe Bonfe grounded out, moving both Songco and Taylor into scoring position with only one out. Kansas City starter Jared Messer (5-3) then threw a wild pitch, allowing Songco to score and tying the game. But Messer and the T-Bones managed to escape the inning without any further damage.

Kansas City took the lead right back in its half of the fourth. Sadler continued his big night at the plate with an RBI double, scoring Matt Padgett, who walked earlier in the inning. Bryan Sabatella then beat out an infield single, scoring Sadler and extending the Kansas City advantage to 3-1.

The T-Bones struck again in the fifth, picking up two more runs courtesy of a triple by Danny Richar, pushing their lead to 5-1. That would be plenty for Messer, who allowed two runs on six hits while striking out three over 5 2/3 innings of work. Ben Hughes (4-3) took the loss.

Relief pitcher Kris Regas came in for Kansas City in the top of the seventh. As he recorded the first out of the inning, the skies opened, causing the extended rain delay. When play resumed, Regas finished the Saints and recorded his 22nd save.

With the win, the T-Bones moved to 44-52 on the season, while the Saints fell to 48-48.

T-Bones trip Fargo, 2-1

The T-Bones scored twice in the opening frame Thursday afternoon and then watched pitcher Kyle DeVore cruise through the majority of the game in a 2-1 win over Fargo-Moorhead at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, N.D.

It didn’t take the T-Bones long to score. With one out and Danny Richar on base in the top of the first inning, Matt Padgett launched his fifth home run of the season. This one traveled more than 410 feet against RedHawks starting pitcher Jake Laber (7-11) and gave the T-Bones all of the runs they’d get in the game.

Those are the only runs DeVore needed, as he cruised through 7 innings, and allowed only four Fargo baserunners in the game on three hits and one walk. The lone run DeVore (5-6) surrendered came in the seventh inning, when Travis Higgs singled, scoring C.J. Retherford.

Kris Regas came in with one on and one out in the eighth, and shut the door for his 21st save with 1 2/3 scoreless innings. The win gave Kansas City the series win over the RedHawks and ended the T-Bones final roadtrip of 2014 with a 3-4 record.

The T-Bones (43-52) get set for their last series of the season with a five-game series against St. Paul, starting with a doubleheader Friday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark beginning at 6:00. Tickets are available by calling the Providence Medical Center Box Office at CommunityAmerica Ballpark at 913-328-5618.

RedHawks’ offense red hot against T-Bones

Fargo-Moorhead knocked around 14 hits, and took game two against Kansas City with a 6-3 win Wednesday evening at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, N.D.

The RedHawks took their first lead of the series with a run in the second inning on an RBI double from Brandon Tripp that scored Travis Higgs.

Fargo broke the game open in the sixth inning, chasing T-Bones starting pitcher Casey Barnes, who gave up three consecutive hits opening the frame. Frank Salerno delivered the big blow with a two-run single. He later scored on a C.J. Retherford RBI single that capped off a four-run inning and extended Fargo-Moorhead’s lead to 5-0.

The T-Bones, down 6-0, scored three runs all with two outs in the eighth inning. Vladimir Frias led the charge with a two-out double and then scored on a single by T.J. Mittelstaedt.
