T-Bones beat Lincoln, 6-0

by Luke Schrock

The Kansas City T-Bones (24-22) beat the Lincoln Saltdogs (22-26) 6-0 to force a rubber match in game three on Sunday afternoon in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The T-Bones ignited on Saturday night at Haymarket Park, recovering after Friday’s 9-4 loss as Tommy Collier (5-3) picked up the win to force the rubber match.

Collier pitched seven solid innings with 5 hits, 2 walks, and 9 strikeouts, which is the fifth time a starter has gone seven innings this season. Brian Ellington and Carlos Diaz also had clean outings to close it off.

Daniel Nava and Shawn O’Malley had great days at the plate. Both had two hits and three RBIs. Dylan Tice kept his hit streak strong by extending it to 12 games after his leadoff single in the fifth inning and scoring off Daniel Nava’s double to score the fourth run of the game.

The Saltdogs answered with seven hits as a team, but they struggled to string together offense. Collier shut down Teodoro Martinez after his three-hit game Friday night with Martinez only getting one hit in Saturday’s game.

Cody Regis was the only multi-hit player for Lincoln as Kyle Kinman (1-3) lost his second start against Kansas City this season. The last time Kinman pitched against the T-Bones he threw four innings with eight hits and three walks on May 22 when Kansas City won at home 9-8 against the Saltdogs.

The T-Bones return home to play the St. Paul Saints on Tuesday night July 9th part of a six-game homestand at 7:05 p.m.

T-Bones drop one to Lincoln

by Luke Schrock

The Kansas City T-Bones (23-22) lost 9-5 to the Lincoln Saltdogs (22-25) after activating Dylan Baker to start Friday’s game.

Lincoln drew first blood in the bottom of the first, scoring two runs. Randolph Oduber scored the first run for Lincoln off an RBI single that scored Christian Ibarra.

Tyler Moore kept the offense going with a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in Cody Regis to make it 2-0 after the first. In total Lincoln would score one or more runs in four of the eight and a half innings played.

Kansas City kept within a three-to-four-run deficit and fought all the way back to a 5-4 deficit until Lincoln killed the T-Bones’ hopes in the bottom of the sixth. Lincoln scored four runs right after the T-Bones scored three.

At the plate there were four different T-Bones who had multi-hit games, and two had four-hit games. Roy Morales and Shawn O’Malley both went 4 for 5 at the plate contributing to 15 total hits for the T-Bones, but only 5 RBIs on the night. Part of what doomed the T-Bones was the 12 left on base, which has been a problem in the past.

There was a total of eight pitchers used between the two teams with Kansas City going five deep into the pitching staff including Ramsey Romano’s fourth appearance on the mound as a T-Bone. Dylan Baker (1-2) started for KCK and recorded a loss with a line of 2.1 innings, 4 hits, 4 runs (3 earned), 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Jose Mesa Jr., Kevin Hamann, Marc Magliaro, and Ramsey Romano all made an appearance against the Saltdogs.

Lincoln’s Nick Tepesch (6-4) continued his winning ways with a line of 11 hits, 4 runs (3 earned), 3 walks, and 3 strikeouts in 6 innings. Austin Pettibone and Austin Boyle finished the job to give Lincoln the first win of the series.

Both teams square off again at 7:05 p.m. Saturday in Lincoln for game two of the three game series. The game can be heard on the , T-Bones Broadcast Network, http://mixlr.com/t-bones-baseball/.

T-Bones’ fifth-inning fireworks provide Fourth of July win

by Sophie Darting and Gabby Albertson

The Kansas City T-Bones played the rubber match of the three-game series with the Sioux Falls Canaries on Thursday, July 4.

The nation’s birthday turned into a game-winning party for 6,017 fans, as KC won the game 6-3, securing the series win.

It was another pitchers’ duel for the first part of the contest, with both teams’ pitchers matching the other and escaping jams whenever a runner happened to get on base.

T-Bones starter Henry Owens struggled with his command during the first five innings, hitting three batters and walking five. However, he buckled down, struck out five Canaries and was able to escape every jam that he found himself in, throwing four scoreless frames. Owens also forced three double plays, a new T-Bones record on the season.

Kansas City’s offense had no trouble getting men on base, but it was tricky for the T-Bones to find a way to bring them around to score, as the T-Bones left six men on base during the first four innings.

Finally, the T-Bones made it on the board first in a six-run bottom of the fifth. Daniel Nava singled, sending home Danny Mars. Then, Christopher Colabello advanced to first on an error by the shortstop, Andrew Ely, and scored Dylan Tice.

Soon after, Casey Gillaspie got a walk, scoring Nava on a wild pitch. Then, Colabello scored on an RBI-double by Shawn O’Malley. After that, Gillaspie scored on a ground out. Then, Mason Davis hit a single that scored O’Malley, ending the fifth strong.

With KC leading 6-0, Robert Calvano took over for Henry Owens in the sixth. Owens held the Canaries hitless through five. Calvano combined to hold Sioux Falls hitless over the next three innings. It took a leadoff single in the top of the ninth from Alay Lago to break up the no-hitter in the top of the ninth.

Sioux Falls fought back in the top of the ninth with Alay Lago scoring on a ground out after advancing on a balk by T-Bones pitcher Robert Calvano. Then, Clint Coulter scored on a single by Nyles Nygaard. Brett Vertigan hit a single, scoring Nygaard, making the final score 6-3.

The winning pitcher was Henry Owens (2-1) for the Kansas City T-Bones, and the losing pitcher was Taylor Hill (5-2) for the Sioux Falls Canaries. Calvano picked up his first save of the season, working three innings.

The T-Bones head to Lincoln Friday, July 5, where they play the Lincoln Saltdogs at Haymarket Park. The first game of the three-game series is set for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. The game will be on the T-Bones Broadcast Network, http://mixlr.com/t-bones-baseball/.
