RedHawks spoil Daugherty’s T-Bones debut

T-Bones starting pitcher Lucas Daugherty had a rough professional debut Friday night as he gave up eight early runs to Fargo-Moorhead in Kansas City’s 13-4 loss to the RedHawks at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

The RedHawks jumped on Daugherty, who graduated this spring from Mount Vernon Nazarene University, in the top of the first and didn’t look back. With one out, Daugherty walked Ryan Wagner before giving up a two-run home run to Keury De La Cruz. Two batters later, after walking Josh Mazzola, Daugherty gave up a two-run homer to K.D. Kang, which put the RedHawks up 4-0.

Fargo-Moorhead sent nine to the plate in the third inning and added four more runs against Daugherty. De La Cruz singled, stole second base and reached third on a wild pitch before the next batter, Mazzola, lifted a sacrifice fly to center field. The RedHawks loaded the bases with a walk to Kang, a single by Brian Humphries and a walk to Luke Bailey. Kes Carter then knocked in two more runs with a single to center. Fargo-Moorhead scored one more time in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Bryan Johns, making it an 8-0 game.

Offensively, the T-Bones didn’t have an answer for the RedHawks’ rookie pitcher, Will Solomon, who was making his first professional start. Kansas City didn’t get to Solomon until scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Solomon walked Tyler Moore, and Starlin Rodriguez reached first on an error by Solomon. After Tyler Massey was hit by a pitch, Jake Blackwood blooped a bases-clearing double to left, bringing the score to 8-3.

The RedHawks strengthened their lead to 13-3 with three more runs in the seventh and then two in the eighth on a two-run home run by Mazzola.

Daugherty (0-1) gave up six hits, four walks and eight runs in 2 1/3 innings. Solomon (1-0) gave up three unearned runs and five hits in 6 innings.

The T-Bones (14-20) will continue to play host to the Fargo-Moorhead (18-15) on Saturday night at 7:05. Tickets are available by calling the Providence Medical Center Box Office at CommunityAmerica Ballpark at 913-328-5618.

T-Bones hold off Blasters, win series

T-Bones
In spite of a shaky top of the ninth, the Kansas City T-Bones held off the Joplin Blasters, 7-5, on Thursday night in front of a crowd of 9,012 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan.

With two outs and the T-Bones leading 7-2 in the ninth, T-Bones reliever Mark Haynes walked the bases loaded. Charlie Valerio singled, scoring both Axel Johnson and Mitch Glasser and bringing Joplin to within striking distance at 7-4. Willie Cabrera singled to right field, scoring Geraldo Valentin and putting the go-ahead run at the plate.

T-Bones manager John Massarelli then turned to Aaron Baker, who took the loss Wednesday after giving up a home run in the ninth. This time, Baker struck out Cory Morales and secured Kansas City’s win.

The T-Bones jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning after Starlin Rodriguez and Jake Blackwood blasted solo home runs to left field.

In the third, after a single and a stolen base, Tyler Massey scored on a double by Blackwood. Blackwood reached third on a wild pitch and scored on Brandon Tierney’s sacrifice fly that gave Kansas City a 4-0 lead.

The T-Bones added insurance runs in the fourth. Joplin starter Frank Del Valle (0-2) walked Brian Erie before giving up back-to-back singles to Rodriguez and Vladimir Frias. With the bases loaded, Del Valle hit Tyler Massey with a pitch. Kansas City added two more runs when Del Valle threw a wild pitch, allowing Rodriguez to score. But a bad throw on the play to Del Valle, who was covering home, brought in Frias and put the T-Bones ahead, 7-0.

Jared Messer (1-0) earned his first win of the season giving up five hits and one run in 7 innings.

The T-Bones, who took two of three from Joplin, will welcome the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks to CommunityAmerica Ballpark for a four-game series beginning Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are available by calling the Providence Medical Center Box Office at CommunityAmerica Ballpark at 913-328-5618.

Joplin outlasts Kansas City

A home run in the top of the ninth by Joplin’s Mitch Glasser proved to be the winning run as Joplin defeated Kansas City 5-4 Wednesday afternoon at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

Entering the top of the ninth, the game was tied 4-4 before T-Bones relief pitcher Aaron Baker (1-1) gave up a solo home run to the first batter he faced, Glasser.

The T-Bones had tied the game a half-inning earlier. An error by Joplin second baseman Glasser on a pop up allowed Anthony Gallas to reach base.

Following back-to-back singles by Dalton Wheat and Brandon Tierney, pinch-hitter Brett Wiley tied the game with a sacrifice fly that scored Gallas.

Even after surrendering the lead in the top of the ninth, Kansas City had a chance to tie the game and possibly win it in the bottom of the inning.

Starlin Rodriguez led off the ninth with a single to left field and, two pitches later, stole second base. Vladimir Frias put down a perfect sacrifice bunt that moved Rodriguez to third.

After Tyler Massey popped out to third baseman Geraldo Valentin, Joplin pitcher Victor Capellan (2-0) intentionally walked Jake Blackwood. With runners at the corners and two outs, Capellan struck out Gallas.

After a scoreless start, Joplin took a 3-0 lead in the third inning thanks to doubles by Edwin Gomez and Valentin, and singles by Axel Johnson and Glasser. Willie Cabrera added a one-out hit that scored Valentin.

T-Bones starting pitcher David Holman gave up nine hits and four runs in 5 1/3 innings. Joplin starter Noel Arguelles, a former Kansas City Royals prospect, gave up nine hits and struck out eight in 6 2/3 innings.

The T-Bones will look to win the series against Joplin Thursday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tickets are available by calling the Providence Medical Center Box Office at CommunityAmerica Ballpark at 913-328-5618.
