Four T-Bones picked for American Association All-Star game

Four Kansas City T-Bones players were picked to play in tonight’s American Association All-Star game.

The four are infielder Dylan Tice, catcher Roy Morales, right-handed pitcher Tommy Collier and left-handed pitcher Nick Lee.

They will play on the South Division All-Star team at the American Association All-Star game at 7:05 p.m. July 23 at CHS Field in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Tice, a reserve utility player for the South, is hitting .309 with 14 stolen bases. He leads the team in runs scored at 30.

Morales is the only T-Bone to have a four-RBI game this season. He has the team-best .315 average with a home run and 16 RBI in 32 games. He will be a reserve catcher in the All-Star game, behind John Nester of Cleburne.

Collier has a 3.86 ERA, striking out 48, and leads the T-Bones in wins, innings pitched and strikeouts. He gave up only four earned runs in his last 26 innings.

Lee has a 3.0 ERA, and has struck out 35 in 24 innings this season.

The T-Bones are sending their field staff to the All-Star game. Manager Joe Calfapietra will manage the team, joined by pitching coach Bill Sobee, bench coach John West and first base coach Frank White.

T-Bones blown out by Goldeyes

A disastrous first inning buried the Kansas City T-Bones early, and they were not able to recover as they fell, 13-2, to the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Saturday night at JustBats Field at T-Bones Stadium in front of 4024 fans on First Responders Night.

The T-Bones’ (30-28) slumping bats were automatically put in a tough position when Winnipeg tagged Kansas City starter Kenny Koplove (2-3) for six runs in the top of the first inning.

Tyler Hill led off with a double and moved to third on an infield single by Wes Darvill. Kyle Martin then doubled in both Hill and Darvill. Willy Garcia followed up with a single and came around to score, along with Martin, on a three-run home run by Dominic Ficociello. The inning concluded with a solo shot from Reggie Abercrombie, and the Goldeyes (32-26) were up 7-0.

Winnipeg continued to pile on the runs in the fifth inning on a pair of solo shots by Martin and Ficociello off of Koplove, to put Kansas City down, 7-0.

In the top of the sixth inning, Tyler Hill started off the inning, reaching base on an error. Darvill then singled, and both Hill and Darvill came around to score on a single by Willy Garcia.

The Goldeyes put up another two-spot off of reliever Kevin Hamann in the top of the seventh inning when Alex Perez singled, Kevin Garcia doubled, and Tyler Hill brought both runners home with a double to make it a 13-0 ballgame.

The T-Bones’ offense was able to get some runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh. Three straight singles by Daniel Nava, Mason Davis, and Ramsey Romano off of Winnipeg starter Mitchell Lambson (7-2) brought Danny Mars to the plate with the bases loaded. Romano brought home Nava and Davis with a single and decreased the deficit, 13-2.

The deficit proved to be too much for the T-Bones to overcome, and they lost the second game of the series to the Goldeyes.

The Kansas City T-Bones and the Winnipeg Goldeyes will play the final game of the series on Sunday, July 21, with a first pitch time of 1:05 p.m. Hear all the action on the T-Bones Broadcast Network, http://mixlr.com/t-bones-baseball/, with a first pitch of 1:05 p.m.

T-Bones outlast Goldeyes in 14-inning midnight special

by Sophie Darting

It took 14 innings, but the Kansas City T-Bones were able to fend off the Winnipeg Goldeyes long enough to win the game, 4-3, at JustBats field at T-Bones Stadium in front of 4,181 fans, including Patrick Mahomes Sr. and his son Patrick Mahomes Jr.

The T-Bones (30-27) attempted to score first in the bottom of the first when Danny Mars hit a single to first base, then advanced to second on an out by Dylan Tice. However, no one brought him home to score.

Later, the Goldeyes (31-26) tried to fight back when Willy Garcia hit a triple, but he got out as he attempted to run home later in the top of the second.

Winnipeg got on the board first in the top of the fifth. Reggie Abercrombie hit a two-run home run off starter Jose Mesa Jr. (0-0), scoring Dominic Ficociello, and making it 2-0.

However, after struggling to put runners on base against Winnipeg starter Joel Seddon (2-3), the T-Bones got the bats going in the bottom of the fifth.

Christian Correa got the inning started with a laser up the middle for a base hit. Mason Davis followed with a double to right field that advanced Correa to third and brought Ramsey Romano to the plate. Romano singled to left, driving in Correa and putting the T-Bones on the board.

Danny Mars and Dylan Tice then drew back-to-back walks, with Tice’s walk bringing Davis home and tying the game at two runs apiece. Shawn O’Malley brought the go-ahead run home with a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-2 T-Bones advantage.

The lead didn’t last long. Winnipeg continued to attack Mesa Jr. when James Harris doubled in the top of the sixth and was brought home on a single by Willy Garcia to tie the game. Garcia’s single also knocked Mesa Jr. out of the game and brought in Evan Korson (0-0).

The score remained knotted at three and would send the game into extra innings until the 14th inning. The T-Bones’ bullpen and above-average defense kept them in the game long enough to give the offense an opportunity to score and win the game.

The bottom of the 14th inning started just before midnight, and the T-Bones needed to score in order to avoid postponing the end of the game until Saturday owing to league curfew.

It started with Mitchell Aker (1-2) walking Daniel Nava, and Christian Correa followed up with a just-fair double to left field to give Kansas City runners on second and third with only one out. After Mason Davis was intentionally walked, and then Ramsey Romano stepped up to the plate. Romano shot a dribbler to the third baseman for an infield hit, and Nava was able to come around and score the winning run.

After throwing two scoreless frames, Robert Calvano (1-2) was awarded the win, and Aker was awarded the loss for the Goldeyes.

The T-Bones and Goldeyes will continue the series with game two at 7:05 p.m. Saturday, July 20. The game will be on the T-Bones Broadcast Network at http://mixlr.com/t-bones-baseball/ with a first pitch of 7:05 p.m. It will be First Responders’ Night with post-game fireworks.
