T-Bones drop series to RailCats

Kansas City was unable to hold off the Gary SouthShore offense in a 7-3 loss Wednesday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan.

With the game tied at 1-1, Gary SouthShore sent nine to the plate in the sixth inning, scoring five runs. Chase Harris led off the inning against Kansas City starter Jared Messer with a single and moved to third on a base hit by Frank Martinez.

Messer (3-2) then walked his fourth batter of the game, Jaime Del Valle, loading the bases. A single by Alex Crosby scored Harris and gave the RailCats a 2-1 lead. John Kovalik relieved Messer, and issued a bases-loaded walk to Jose Gonzalez, which scored Martinez. John Holland then singled to right field against reliever Josh Tols, scoring both Del Valle and Crosby, bringing the score to 6-1.

The T-Bones cut the lead in half in the bottom of the sixth. RailCats’ starting pitcher Richard Castillo walked both Anthony Gallas and Vladimir Frias.

Then, with two outs, Starlin Rodriguez, who was pinch-hitting for Sergio Leon, singled and scored Gallas. Another single by Tyson Gillies made it 6-3 as Frias scored.

The T-Bones scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning. With one out, Frias singled to right field and advanced to third on a single by Dalton Wheat. With two in scoring position, Brian Erie singled to left, scoring Frias and bringing the score to 1-0.

The RailCats answered in the top of the fifth. Messer walked his third batter of the game Holland, who stole second. Holland then scored on a deep hit to right field by Cameron Newell, who tried to stretch it into a double but was thrown out by Wheat. After Messer struck out Edwin Devarie, the inning ended with the game tied, 1-1.

With the loss, Kansas City (29-35) dropped two of three games against Gary. The T-Bones are off Thursday before heading out for a three-game road trip to Winnipeg. The series starts Friday at 7 p.m. All of the action can be heard online at TBonesBaseball.com.

Rosario gives RailCats win over T-Bones with complete game

The Kansas City T-Bones couldn’t find an answer for Gary SouthShore starter Charle Rosario in a 7-2 loss to the RailCats Tuesday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan.

The game was close until the RailCats broke it open in the sixth. With the game tied at 2-2, T-Bones starting pitcher Josh Hodges (3-5) issued consecutive four-pitch walks to Chase Harris and Jose Gonzalez.

Alex Crosby followed with a single to right that scored Harris and gave Gary SouthShore a 3-2 lead. Josh Tols came in to relieve Hodges and loaded the bases after giving up a single to Elbert Devarie. After Gonzalez was forced out at home on a fielder’s choice grounder by Andy DeJesus, Jarred Mederos gave the RailCats a 6-2 lead with a bases clearing double.

Hodges, who was the league pitcher of the week a week ago, gave up five runs on four hits and four walks in 5 1/3 innings. He had retired nine consecutive batters, starting with the final two outs in the third inning, before the one-out walk that started Gary’s rally in the sixth.

The four-run cushion after the top of the sixth was more than enough for Rosario (6-3), who allowed only two runs on four hits and two walks in the complete-game victory. The two runs came on two hits — a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first by Tyson Gillies that tied the game at 1-1, and then a solo homer to Anthony Gallas with one out in the fourth that tied the game at 2-2.

Gary SouthShore added an insurance run in the seventh, when Chase Harris was hit by a pitch from reliever David Holman. He then advanced to third on a bad throw by Holman on a pick-off attempt at first. Martinez launched a sacrifice fly to center that scored Harris.

The T-Bones (29-35) will continue to play host to the RailCats (33-31) on Wednesday night at 7:05. Tickets are available by calling the Providence Medical Center Box Office at CommunityAmerica Ballpark at 913-328-5618.

T-Bones beat Gary in wild finish

After allowing four runs in the final two innings, the Kansas City T-Bones scored two runs on a sacrifice bunt in the ninth for a 5-4 walk-off win against the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Monday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan.

Trailing 4-3, Tyson Gillies started the T-Bones off in the bottom of the ninth with a double off the left field wall against Taylor Black.

With Gillies at second, Brett Wiley put down a perfect sacrifice bunt, but the throw from catcher Jaime Del Valle went over the head of first baseman Alex Crosby, which allowed Gillies to score.

As the ball went toward the right field corner, Wiley ran to third. The throw, however, from the right fielder Chase Harris went past third baseman Elbert Devarie, and Wiley popped up and headed home for the winning run. Wiley was credited with a sacrifice bunt and the RailCats were charged with two errors on the play.

The T-Bones got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. Kansas City’s leadoff batter, Gillies, got the first hit of the game with a single to center. With two outs and Gillies advancing to second on a wild pitch, Jake Blackwood singled, scoring Gillies and giving the T-Bones a 1-0 lead.

Kansas City extended its lead to 2-0 in the second. After RailCats starting pitcher Carlos Pinales struck out Vladimir Frias, Dalton Wheat got his first hit of the night with a single to center. Following another strikeout by Pinales, Sergio Leon’s single scored Wheat. In the fourth, Wheat tripled, but was thrown out at home trying to score on a groundball by Tyler Moore.

T-Bones starting pitcher Jordan Cooper was perfect through three innings before Cameron Newell led off the fourth with a single to right field. Two batters later, Harris singled to left, but Cooper kept the RailCats scoreless.

The RailCats trailed 3-0 until the eighth inning. Cooper walked Newell, and Alex Cheky followed with a single.

Kansas City turned to reliever Johnny Shuttlesworth, who got Harris out on a sacrifice bunt that moved Newell and Cheky to second and third, respectively. Frank Martinez then grounded out to Wiley, scoring Newell.

After Shuttlesworth walked Del Valle, newly-signed pitcher Tyler Ybarra struck out Alex Crosby for what should’ve been the third out, but the ball got past the catcher Moore, allowing Cheky to score. That cut the T-Bones’ lead to 3-2. Both runs were charged to Cooper, who allowed six hits and two walks in 7 innings.

The RailCats took the lead in the ninth against Kansas City closer Mark Haynes. Jarred Mederos started the ninth with a double off Haynes (1-0), who then walked Newell. A sacrifice by Cheky scored Mederos, tying the game at 3-3. With two outs, a single by Martinez scored Newell, giving the RailCats a 4-3 lead.

The T-Bones (29-34) will continue to play host to the RailCats (32-31) on Tuesday night at 7:05. Tickets are available by calling the Providence Medical Center Box Office at CommunityAmerica Ballpark at 913-328-5618.
