T-Bones lose to Canaries in walk-off game

Holiday cheer was in the air in Sioux Falls (30-34) as the Canaries celebrated a charity Christmas in July on Friday, and celebrate they did after a final walk that brought in the winning run for the Canaries, giving them the walk-off win, 4-3, over the T-Bones (31-31).

Tommy Collier started on the mound for the T-Bones, tossing seven solid innings for the T-Bones pitching his seventh quality start in 11 starts for the T-Bones.

In the top of the third, Mason Davis hit a single that advanced him to first, and Roy Morales went to second after reaching on an error. Dylan Tice hit a single that allowed Davis and Morales to score, pulling the T-Bones ahead 2-0.

In the top of the fourth inning, Tyler Marincov hit a single that advanced him to first base, and in the top of the fifth, Roy Morales walked to first, and Mason Davis hit a single that sent Morales to third, but no one could bring either runner home — a prevalent problem plaguing the T-Bones.

In the sixth inning, the Canaries narrowed the lead to (2-1) with a home run by Kevin Taylor off Tommy Collier.

In the top of the seventh, Casey Gillaspie answered with another home run, his third in this series, bringing the score to (3-1) for KC.

Robert Calvano came in for Tommy Collier who left after seven. Calvano retired the first batter but after walking Graham Low the ninth man in the order was relieved by Evan Korson.

The left-handed pitcher retired the first batter with a strike out but a triple by Andrew Ely brought Graham Low home, tightening the score to 3-2 and making the final innings another nail-biting situation for the T-Bones.

A Clint Coulter single brought Ely home, tying the ball game 3-3 in the eighth. Walks continued to plague the T-Bones late in the ballgame. With Korson struggling to find the strike zone, Kevin Hamann came in with Canaries on every base. Hamann managed to dodge even more damage, striking out Burt Reynolds, ending the eighth inning with the game tied, 3-3.

A lead-off walk for Marincov off Luis Pollerena got the inning started off well for the T-Bones, but a double play ball left the T-Bones with only one more hope in the ninth. Hamann walked the leadoff batter in the home half of the ninth, Josh Rehwaldt.

The next batter, Jordan Ebert, laid down a sacrifice bunt and appeared to be out at first but first base umpire Nick Saxton called him safe. T-Bones Manager Joe Calfapietra got tossed, incensed at the call. With an intentional pass for Brett Vertigan, the bases were loaded for the Canaries, but Hamann could not find the strike zone, walking in the game-winning run on four pitches and giving the win to the Canaries, 4-3.

The winning pitcher was the Canaries’ Pollerena (5-2), and Hamann (1-2) got the loss for the T-Bones. Manager Joe Calfapietra holds on to his record of 998 regular season wins.

The T-Bones head to CHS Field in St. Paul where they will take on the Saints in a three-game series beginning at 7:05 p.m. Saturday, looking to come back after a heart-breaking series loss. The game will be on the T-Bones Broadcast Network at http://mixlr.com/t-bones-baseball/.

T-Bones beat Canaries, 4-0

The T-Bones (31-30) pitching staff was on fire Thursday night as Kansas City took the second game of the three-game series with the Sioux Falls Canaries (29-34), thanks to a combined 17 strikeouts, a season high for the T-Bones.

Jose Mesa Jr. started off strong, striking out the first Canaries batter, Brett Vertigan, looking to avoid another T-Bones first inning fiasco. Danger brewed as two runners got on board, but Mesa managed to dodge any damage.

In the top of the second inning, Casey Gillaspie hit a solo shot to left off Alex Boshers, his eighth home run on the year, giving the T-Bones an early lead, 1-0.

The middle innings were nothing short of a fireworks show of strikeouts by Jose Mesa Jr, who continued to throw strike after strike after strike, 13 total, keeping the birds off of the scoreboard.

In the seventh inning, Gillaspie got a double, followed by a stolen base that brought him to 3rd. Correa’s deep drive sacrifice fly brought Gillaspie home, buying the insurance and making it 2-0, KC.

Brian Ellington took over for Mesa Jr after six innings and kept the T-Bones’ advantage, throwing strikeouts as well.

On the night, the T-Bones left four men on base, struggling once again to bring players home, making the pitching the driving force of the game.

In the 9th, again it was Casey Gillaspie who hit a 2-run home run, driving in Nava who reached first on a walk by Boshers, making the score 4-0, KC. Gillaspie becomes the first T-Bone to have a multi-homerun ballgame this season.

Carlos Diaz came in to shut the cage door on the Canaries, but it looked dicey for the T-Bones as he walked two runners and allowed two hits. With Canaries on every bag, Diaz calmed the rocky start and ended the game, 4-0, getting win 998 for Joe Calfapietra, Mesa Jr. (1-0) got the win for the T-Bones, and Alex Boshers of Sioux Falls dropped to 4-3.

KC will return for the rubber match game of the series at 7:05 p.m. Friday, July 26. Canaries fly past KC in opener

The Kansas City T-Bones (30-30) offense fell stagnant for most of Wednesday night as Kansas City dropped the opener to the Sioux Falls Canaries (29-33) 7-4 in their first game back from the All-Star break.

The T-Bones kept it close for most of the game in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Kansas City starter Dylan Baker (2-3) kept his team in it, giving up three runs in 4.1 innings. Sioux Falls’ Keaton Steele (2-6) countered with six innings of two run ball en route to the win.

After falling behind in the first, KC got a run on an RBI single off the bat of Ramsey Romano, driving in Mason Davis to make it 1-1. The Canaries got two in the fifth, but a sacrifice fly by Casey Gillaspie brought home Chris Colabello, making at a one run game at 3-2.

The score held until the seventh, when Sioux Falls added another. They poured it on in the eighth, scoring three runs to take a 7-2 lead to the ninth.

KC got a couple back off Canaries pitcher Alex Ogren, as Roy Morales hit his second home run of the year. Dylan Tice followed with a base hit, bringing home Mason Davis on an error, but their comeback ended there as Taylor Marincov struck out, swinging to end the game.

Walks plagued the T-Bones pitchers, as they allowed nine on the night. Evan Korson was able to come in relief of Baker, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings. Henry Owens, however, walked three straight batters, and gave up one run with no outs recorded. Robert Calvano gave up three more runs in the eighth, as he threw two innings of three run ball.

Roy Morales was one of the bright spots in the T-Bones lineup. Fresh off the All-Star game in St. Paul, Roy finished the day 3-4 with a home run.

KC will look to bounce back in game two at 7:05 p.m. Thursday, July 25, as Jose Mesa Jr. (0-0) will make his second start for the T-Bones. Alex Boshers (4-2) will get the nod for the Canaries.
