Fargo-Moorhead powers past T-Bones

Fargo-Moorhead defeated Kansas City, 7-3, behind five extra-base hits Tuesday night at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo-N.D.

In the third inning, Ryan Wagner smacked a solo home run to left field, his fourth homer of the season, off T-Bones starter Jordan Cooper. There were back-to-back doubles from Mike Gilmartin and Kes Carter, with Carter’s scoring Gilmartin with one out. Carter was brought home two batters later when Keury De La Cruz singled, making it 3-0 through three innings.

Fargo added to its lead in the fourth. After Dustin Geiger reached on a fielder’s choice, Brian Humphries hit a two-run home run, his 13th of the season, extending the RedHawks’ lead to 5-0.

Fargo-Moorhead kept it rolling in the fifth when Ryan Pineda led off with a triple and was followed two batters later by Josh Mazzola, who grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored Pineda. With two outs, Kang singled and was sent home after T-Bones’ center fielder Tyler Massey lost the ball in the lights off the bat of Geiger, who was credited with a double. That put Kansas City in a deep 7-0 deficit.

The T-Bones tried to claw back in the seventh. Anthony Gallas and Tyson Gillies led off the inning by reaching on a walk and a double. They were hit home by Vladimir Frias and Ryan Retz on a ground out and sacrifice fly, making it 7-2.

Dalton Wheat reached on an error by Fargo shortstop Mike Gilmartin, and was eventually sent home for Kansas City’s final run when Gillies singled later in the inning.

The T-Bones had plenty of opportunities, stranding the bases loaded twice. Massey, Wheat and Wiley all reached in the first inning with nobody out. Fargo-Moorhead starter Dylan Mouzakes ended the threat by striking out the next three.

In the eighth, trailing by four, Frias stepped in with the bases loaded and two outs, and struck out. Kansas City stranded nine runners on base in the game.

T-Bones’ team effort avoids sweep

Kansas City scored in three consecutive innings and avoided the sweep, defeating Gary SouthShore, 5-1, Sunday afternoon at U.S. Steel Yard in Gary, Ind.

After the T-Bones tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth, they took the lead in the sixth. Anthony Gallas started things off with a one-out single against RailCats’ reliever Carlos Pinales (0-2).

Tyson Gillies brought Gallas home on the next pitch when he tripled to center field and gave the T-Bones a 2-1 lead. But the T-Bones did not stop there. Vladimir Frias brought Gillies home with a base hit to right. The T-Bones led 3-1 after six.

The T-Bones added insurance runs in the seventh inning. Tyler Massey led off the inning with a double and was moved to third on a sacrifice by Dalton Wheat. The next batter, Brett Wiley, brought in Massey with a double of his own. Gallas then knocked Wiley home with a single to left field, giving Kansas City a 5-1 lead.

With the way the Kansas City pitchers worked throughout the game, a four-run lead was plenty.

The only blemish came in the second when Alex Crosby scored on a hit by E.J. Devarie against Kansas City starter Jared Messer (5-3). Messer went 6 innings and allowed six hits with the lone run and struck out three.

Josh Tols pitched one perfect inning of relief. Mark Haynes entered in the eighth and slammed the door on the RailCats with two scoreless innings.

The T-Bones trailed 1-0 until the fifth, when Ryan Retz led off the inning with his first home run as a T-Bone.

After salvaging the three-game series against Gary SouthShore, Kansas City (40-52) will start a four-game away series against Fargo-Moorhead (48-44) on Monday night, with the first pitch set for 7:05. All of the action can be heard at TBonesBaseball.com.
