T-Bones drop last game of successful road trip

The Kansas City T-Bones dropped the final game of their 10-game road trip 14-4 Sunday afternoon to the Sioux Falls Canaries at Sioux Falls Stadium in South Dakota.

Things went south early as the Canaries scored three in the first to take a 3-0 lead off starter Calvin Drummond (0-1). Blake Schmit was the highlight with an RBI single to left center that scored two of the three runs for Sioux Falls.

Sioux Falls got a two home run game from Chris Jacobs who hit his first in the third inning as the Canaries raced to a 7-0 lead during a four-run frame.

Kevin Keyes cut the deficit to 7-3 with a three-run home run to left in the fourth inning off veteran left-hander Joe Bircher (2-2). The Canaries starter tossed a quality start, working six innings to pick up the win.

Sioux Falls put the game away with a six-run sixth off reliever Aaron Brooks. Jacobs led the way with his second homer, a two-run shot, giving him four RBIs for the day.

Outfielder Daniel Rockett came in the game from left field to pitch the eighth, striking out Burt Reynolds and getting a double play ball to toss a scoreless inning.

The T-Bones went 7-3 on the road trip and won all three series at St. Paul, Gary and Sioux Falls. The team returns home Monday to play host to Wichita in the first game of a three-game series and part of a six game home stand.

T-Bones hold on in extra innings for another win

The Kansas City T-Bones outlasted the Sioux Falls Canaries 8-7 in 11 innings Saturday night at Sioux Falls Stadium in South Dakota.

A wild night with 22 strike outs, three ejections, a blown save and four home runs helped the T-Bones scratch out a go-ahead run in the 11th.

Marcus Lemon, who celebrated his 29th birthday Saturday, delivered an infield single with the bases loaded to break the 7-7 deadlock in the 11th off Sioux Falls left-hander Josh Ferrell (1-2).

The T-Bones took the lead, 1-0, in the second on an unearned run off an error by Sioux Falls. The Canaries took their first lead of the series with a pair in the bottom of the second to make the score 2-1. Burt Reynolds hit his first of two homers of the game an inning later off T-Bones starter Scott Carroll to make the score 3-1.

But Kansas City answered in the fourth, getting one run back on a double from Joe Jackson, and then they took the lead in the fifth on a grand slam home run off the bat of Zach Walters and a solo shot from Chase McDonald to make it 7-3.

The Canaries chipped away with a run in the fifth on another Reynolds home run and a pair in the eighth to make it 7-5 in the ninth.

The T-Bones turned to Grant Sides who struck out the first man he faced in Ty Morrison. Morrison was tossed from the game for Sioux Falls, but the Canaries loaded the bases on three straight walks and then got back-to-back bases loaded walks by Black Schmit and Aaron Gretz to tie the game 7-7.

Sides was relieved by Rich Mascheri (2-0) who got the final out of the inning. The left-hander went on to work 2 1/3 scoreless innings with four strike outs to earn the win.

The T-Bones got a season-high 17 strike outs from the pitching staff, with 13 coming in the first nine innings. Kamakani Usui struck out the side in the seventh, and for the second night in a row, the T-Bones pen achieved that feat.

The T-Bones 10-game road trip wraps up Sunday afternoon at 4:05 p.m. with the final game of the three-game series at Sioux Falls.

Kansas City will turn to right-hander Calvin Drummond (0-0, 2.63) to face left-hander Joe Bircher (1-2, 4.33). The game can be heard on the T-Bones Broadcast Network online at tbonesbaseball.com.

The T-Bones return home Monday, June 5, to play host to Wichita in the first game of a three-game series. Tickets are available online, by calling 913-328-5618 or by visiting in person the Providence Medical Center Box Office.

T-Bones win series opener at Sioux Falls

The Kansas City T-Bones opened the final series of their three-city road trip the same as they have the first two times on the trip–with a win. The T-Bones shut out the Sioux Falls Canaries 2-0 Friday night at Sioux Falls Stadium.

Kansas City rode the arm of Jeff Walter who went 5 2/3 scoreless innings, notching six strike outs and a shutdown bull pen that worked 3 1/3 scoreless innings to secure the win in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The T-Bones took an early 1-0 lead off Sioux Falls starter Troy Marks in the top of the second. Zach Walters doubled to start the inning and came home on a single from Chase McDonald.

Kansas City added to its lead in the next inning with Leo Rojas working a lead-off walk from Marks, then Eddie Newton followed with a double off the wall in left to make the score 2-0 T-Bones.

Sioux Falls threatened in the fifth and load the bases with one out, but Walters induced a double play ball off the bat of Ty Morrison to end the scoring chance.

In the sixth Walters again faced a tough situation and struck out David Popkins with the bases loaded for the second out of the inning. Cody Winiarski came into the game and strike out Mike Falsetti to end the Canaries scoring hope.

In the eighth inning Rich Mascheri struck out the side to take the game to the ninth. Grant Sides retired the first man he faced with a strike out but gave up a single to David Popkins. Sides worked around an error at second by Zach Walters to retire the final two batters to get the save, his second.

Walters, (1-0), got the win while the loss went to Marks, (0-3). Kansas City struck out 12 Canaries, matching a season high, and the shut out was their second of the season and of the road trip.

In Thursday night’s game, the Gary SouthShore RailCats defeated the T-Bones, 5-2, on the road.

The T-Bones 10-game road trip continues Saturday night with the second game of the three-game series at Sioux Falls. Kansas City will turn to right-hander Scott Carroll (1-1, 2.45) to take the hill, while Sioux Falls will counter with right-hander Miles Nordgren (0-1, 4.00). The game can be heard on the T-Bones Broadcast Network online at tbonesbaseball.com.
