Saltdogs crush T-Bones, 15-7

by Alex Dean

The Kansas City T-Bones (35-36) couldn’t contain Lincoln’s bats, as the Saltdogs (32-40) cruised to a 15-7 win Sunday in Nebraska, closing out a sweep of this weekend series.

Kansas City starter Jose Mesa Jr. (1-2) picked up the loss, giving up nine runs, eight of them earned, through three innings. Jake Hohensee (3-5) got the win for Lincoln.

The T-Bones struck first in the second inning on a two-run home run by Shawn O’Malley on a shot to right field, driving in Roy Morales off the starter Hohensee.

Saltdogs’ Cody Regis and Randolph Oduber both had RBI in a four-run bottom of the third, putting themselves in the lead at 4-2. Roy Morales would answer with an RBI single off the Saltdogs starter in the fourth, driving in Daniel Nava and bringing the game within one.

However, an eight-run bottom of the fourth by the Saltdogs, including an RBI by Cody Regis and Curt Smith off Mesa Jr. blew the game open for Lincoln.

Kevin Hamann took over for Mesa Jr. in the fourth and faced seven more batters, giving up the final three runs of the inning. Hamann went two more innings and gave up two more runs to run the score up to 14-3.

Ramsey Romano came in for mop-up duty and finished off the game for the T-Bones, giving up one run over the final two innings.

The T-Bones offense fell silent after the fourth inning, going scoreless until a four-run ninth which saw Daniel Nava hit a two-run double and Chris Colabello follow with a two-run home run off Lincoln pitcher Shairon Martis. However, this would prove to be too little too late for KC, as the T-Bones fell to the Saltdogs 15-7.

One of the T-Bones’ bright spots on offense came from Daniel Nava, who finished the day 4-5 with three doubles and two RBI.

Every T-Bone had at least one hit aside from Tyler Marincov, who went 0-4. However, Marincov had a home run taken away from him in the seventh on a leaping catch by Saltdogs left fielder Nick Schultz. He also had a hit taken away in the eighth when he grounded into a double play on a diving stop by shortstop Ivan Marin.

After an off day on Monday, the T-Bones will head to Cleburne to take on the Railroaders Tuesday Aug. 6, with a first pitch of 7:06 p.m. Tommy Collier (6-4) will take the hill for the T-Bones. The game will be on the T-Bones Broadcast Network with Dan Vaughan on the call.

Tickets to all T-Bones home games are on sale online or by calling 913-328-5618 or by visiting the Saint Luke’s Box Office between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Group ticket sales are also on sale.

T-Bones lose 4-2 in 12 innings

by Luke Schrock

The Kansas City T-Bones led for seven innings Saturday, but after the Lincoln Saltdogs tied the game in the eighth, the T-Bones were unable to score again, ending in the 12th inning with a 4-2 loss on the road in Nebraska.

The T-Bones now are 35-35 this season, with the Saltdogs at 31-40.

After 12 long innings, the decision in game two went to Reese Gregory (1-0) as the winner and Kevin Hamann (1-3) as the losing pitcher.

The T-Bones offense scored first on Saltdog starting pitcher John Brownell with a 2-run inning. Shawn O’Malley hit an RBI single scoring Mason Davis. Casey Gillaspie hit a ground ball to first for an out, allowing Dylan Tice to score from third. The T-Bones were able to accrue six hits but struggled with stranding men on base.

Former T-Bone Forrestt Allday, Daniel Herrera and Cody Regis all had good days at the plate against Kansas City Saturday, all sporting two hits apiece. Everyone in the Saltdog lineup, except Curt Smith, got at least one hit.

In the eighth inning, Lincoln’s Josh Mazzola scored Cody Regis and Forrestt Allday off a single.

After the tie, T-Bones third baseman Ramsey Romano hit a big triple in the 10th inning, but neither Dylan Tice nor Mason Davis were able to bring Romano in. Throughout the extra innings, the T-Bones’ bats went cold, and eventually it was the death of the T-Bones’ series hopes.

Pitcher Kevin Hamann entered the 12th to keep up the battle, but he gave up a walk off two-run home run by Cody Regis to right field to make it a series win for Lincoln.

The T-Bones will play to avoid the sweep at 5:05 p.m. Sunday in Lincoln. The game will be on the T-Bones Broadcast Network, http://mixlr.com/t-bones-baseball/, with Dan Vaughan on the call.

Tickets to all T-Bones home games are on sale online or by calling 913-328-5618 or by visiting the Saint Luke’s Box Office between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Group ticket sales are also on sale.

Sporting KC to visit Seattle Sunday

Two of Major League Soccer’s most successful clubs over the last decade will square off Sunday night when Sporting Kansas City (6-9-7, 25 points) visits CenturyLink Field to battle second-place Seattle Sounders FC (11-6-5, 38 points).

Kickoff is slated for 9 p.m. Sunday with national coverage on FS1, FOX Deportes and the FOX Sports app, while listeners can catch local radio broadcasts on Sports Radio 810 WHB and ESPN Deportes KC 1480 AM. Additional in-game updates will be available via the Sporting KC App.

Winners of four major championships since 2012 and riding an eight-year postseason streak, Sporting is in an unfamiliar position as the calendar turns to August.

Manager Peter Vermes’ side occupies 10th place in the Western Conference following last Friday’s 3-1 loss at New York City FC. Six points separate Sporting from the seventh and final playoff spot in the West, underscoring the importance of Sunday’s fixture in the Pacific Northwest.

Injuries plagued Sporting throughout the first half of 2019, but an improved bill of health should prove helpful in the club’s mission to climb the standings.

The midfield is guaranteed to see at least one change from the previous match, as Roger Espinoza will serve a one-game red card suspension. One candidate to replace the influential Honduran is Felipe Gutierrez, the team’s leading scorer who missed the NYCFC encounter due to caution accumulation. Gutierrez has a team-best eight goals this season, while forwards Johnny Russell and Krisztian Nemeth are close behind with seven each-though neither has scored since the month of May.

On the opposite sideline, Seattle appears well on its way to an 11th successive playoff berth-good for the longest active streak in MLS.

The 2016 MLS Cup champions and four-time U.S. Open Cup winners are second in the West, 11 points behind runaway leaders LAFC and only a point ahead of LA Galaxy and the San Jose Earthquakes. Head coach Brian Schmetzer’s men are coming off a 1-0 win at the Houston Dynamo last Saturday that produced a lone goal from U.S. international Jordan Morris.

Seattle’s success has largely stemmed from their rampant form at CenturyLink Field. The Sounders are 8-1-2 at home this year, paced by the likes of Morris and influential playmaker Nicolas Lodeiro.

The talismanic Uruguayan ranks fourth in MLS with nine assists and has 23 goals and 45 assists to his name since joining the club in 2016. Elsewhere, forward Raul Ruidiaz-currently recovering from a concussion-leads the side with eight goals despite starting just 10 of Seattle’s 22 MLS matches.
Other notable players nearing a return from injury include midfielder Victor Rodriguez (two goals, three assists) and defender Gustav Svennson (13 starts).

Sporting and Seattle previously met on May 26 at Children’s Mercy Park. A five-goal thriller unfolded as Russell delivered a scintillating performance that ultimately granted his team a 3-2 triumph.

The Scottish international bagged a hat-trick to overcome Seattle strikes from Ruidiaz and Kelvin Leerdam, serving up one of Sporting’s best moments of 2019 to date.

Vermes’ men are 5-2-3 against Seattle over the last 10 meetings, a stretch that dates back to early 2015. Matches between the clubs have tended to be low-scoring at CenturyLink Field, with eight of the 10 meetings at the stadium (including playoffs) producing one or fewer goals.

The most recent fixture in Seattle deviated from the script, as Sporting took a 3-1 loss on Sept. 1, 2018. The visitors took an early lead through forward Diego Rubio, but Seattle rallied behind an own goal, a Ruidiaz tally and a Lodeiro penalty kick.
