Weather beats Wingnuts and T-Bones

After a warm week in Wichita, the weather finally won a game, as the T-Bones and Wichita Wingnuts were rained out on Thursday night at Lawrence Dumont Stadium.

The weather forced the players to leave the field during warm ups and fans were asked to exit the grandstand and leave the facility and head for shelter from the approaching storms. The press box was also closed down and the T-Bones departure was delayed until 8:30 p.m. for the ride back to Kansas City, due to high winds and rain.

The two clubs will play a double header to be announced at a later date. The T-Bones return to Wichita on Aug. 14 to 17 and the game will fall somewhere in that window.

The T-Bones return home on Friday night, to begin a 10-game homestand with the first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m. The game is on the T-Bones Broadcast Network online at tbonesbaseball.com.

Tickets to home games are available online, by calling 913-328-5618 or by visiting in person the Providence Medical Center Box Office.

T-Bones ride Carroll to a 7-5 win

Facing an early 11:05 a.m. start, a three-game losing streak and upon hearing the pre-game news that the Kansas City Royals had purchased the contract of four-hole hitter Zach Walters, the T-Bones had all the ingredients for a recipe for a slow start Wednesday at Wichita.

That was the furthest thing from the case as the T-Bones were more than up to the challenge. Kansas City took a 5-0 lead before the clock hit noon on the way to ending a three-game losing streak. Kansas City rode a solid effort from starter Scott Carroll (3-1) to beat the Wichita Wingnuts 7-5 Wednesday at Lawrence Dumont Stadium in Wichita.

In the top of the first inning for Kansas City, Marcus Lemon had an RBI double and Kevin Keyes followed with a two-run home run, off Wichita starter Alex Boshers (3-2), to make it 3-0 after one.

Kansas City picked up two more runs in the second. Eddie Newton singled to left and with one out Marcus Lemon doubled him home to up the score to 4-0. Kevin Keyes then followed with a tripled to left center to score Lemon and it was 5-0 T-Bones.

Wichita got two runs off Carroll in the second, but the T-Bones veteran was able to find his groove and toss a quality start with six strike outs. Zac Fisher hit a solo shot in the fifth for Wichita but the T-Bones would answer in the top of the next inning.

With the departure of Zach Walters, Kansas City activated Jordan Edgerton off the disabled list prior to the game. The former Atlanta Braves farm hand launched a two-run homer off Boshers to make the score 7-3 Kansas City in the sixth.

The Wingnuts got two runs in the home half of the eighth inning on a Matt Chavez two run home run off T-Bones reliever Grant Sides but that was as close as they would get. Cody Winiarski worked a scoreless ninth to pick up his third save. The Wingnuts got the lead off man aboard to bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom of ninth, but Winiarski shut the door, retiring Wichita in order 1-2-3, with a pair of strike outs the last one ending the game.

The series and trip will wrap up Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. in Wichita with right-handed pitcher Calvin Drummond (1-1, 5.32) for Kansas City facing right-handed pitcher Ryan Kussmal (2-2, 4.10) for Wichita. The game will be on the T-Bones Broadcast Network online at tbonesbaseball.com. The team returns home on Friday night, June 16, to begin a 10 game homestand.

T-Bones can’t match Wingnuts’ bats

After late inning drama the night before, the Wichita Wingnuts scored seven runs in the first three innings, to erase any suspense in a 15-3 win over the Kansas City T-Bones Tuesday night at Lawrence Dumont Stadium in Wichita.

The T-Bones placed left-handed Rich Mascheri (2-1) into the starting rotation for the game, and he was in trouble early.

Wichita got three first inning doubles to jump out to a 2-0 lead, the last two were RBIs from Brent Clevlen and Matt Chavez. They added another three in the second off Mascheri with a solo homer from Martin Medina and an RBI double from T.J. Mittelstaedt that scored two more runs to make the score 5-0.

The T-Bones picked up a run in the top of the third to cut the lead to 5-1 on an RBI ground out by Omar Garcia, but Wichita was at it again in the bottom of the inning. Leo Vargas hit a two run home run inside the park to make it 7-1.

The Wingnuts then went on to score another six in the fourth inning, with Matt Chavez hitting a three-run home run to highlight the inning off Aaron Brooks to make the score 13-1. Wichita added to their lead late in the seventh with an RBI single from Zac Fisher that scored two more.

Kansas City got two more runs the rest of the way, on a sacrifice fly from Kevin Keyes in the fifth and a solo homer from Keyes in the ninth, his league leading 10th.

Wichita got a solid start from Tyler Kane (4-1), who picked up the win, going seven strong innings and allowing just one earned run on seven hits.

The rest will be short as the two teams will play game three of the series at 11:05 a.m. Wednesday with right-hander Scott Carroll (2-1, 3.52) going for Kansas City and facing right-hander Alex Boshers (3-1, 5.04) for Wichita.
