T-Bones ride Carroll and Pen to 6-2 win

Scott Carroll tossed his fourth straight quality start, and the T-Bones bullpen worked their third straight scoreless night as Kansas City took game two of the three game series, 6-2, over the Sioux City Explorers in Sioux City, Iowa.

Carroll (4-2) retired nine straight at one point and notched 10 strikeouts on the night, holding the X’s to two runs on four hits. The team would strike out 15 Sioux City batters–the highest nine-inning total and eclipsing the 13 the club sent down on June 3 at Sioux Falls.

At the plate Leo Rojas drove in two runs for Kansas City. In the top of the second with two outs, Patrick Brady hit the first Alex White pitch he saw to right to drive in the first run of the game. Rojas then followed with another RBI single, and the lead was 2-0.

Marcus Lemon hit a solo home run off White in the top of the third to make it 3-0, part of a three-hit night for Lemon. Rojas was back again with a solo blast to left field to give the T-Bones a 4-0 lead in the fourth.

The T-Bones picked up a pair of unearned runs in the fifth behind a pair of errors from Sioux City to add to the lead and make the score 6-0 Kansas City.

The X’s picked up two runs in the bottom of the sixth on RBI singles from Levon Washington and Brian Fortier, but Carrol responded by retiring the last five batters before he left with a 6-2 lead after seven.

Myles Smith worked a scoreless eighth inning, and Grant Sides allowed a lead-off single in the ninth, then struck out the next three batters to win the game 6-2.

The win helped the T-Bones jump past Sioux City for second place in the American Association Central Division and moved Kansans City a half game behind first place Lincoln, who lost Saturday night. The T-Bones also secured their ninth series win and are now 4-1 on the six-game road trip and 12-6 away from CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

The win secured the club’s eighth series win and evened the season series with first place Lincoln at three games apiece.

Lincoln grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom the first with a solo home run from Christian Ibarra off T-Bones starter Gabe Perez.

Kansas City took the lead in the top of the second on a two-run homer from Chantz Mack off Seth Webster and the score was 2-1. Marcus Lemon hit a solo home run an inning later, giving the T-Bones a 3-1 lead. Lemon got another hit later in the game to finish the series 7-for-14.

In the top of the ninth, Randolph Oduber led off the inning with a walk, but Cody Winiarski worked around it, striking out Ibarra to end the game with Oduber on third.
