T-Bones fall short in comeback attempt

The Kansas City T-Bones fell short, 6-5, after trailing the Lincoln Saltdogs 4-0 early on Tuesday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

After going 3-3 on a six game road trip, the T-Bones returned home to CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kansas, on Tuesday night to take on the Lincoln Saltdogs. The Saltdogs immediately took control of the game with a four run first inning.

Second baseman Cesar Valera started the night off with a bang with a three-run home run to put the Saltdogs up 3-0. Nathaniel Maggio, Lincoln’s first baseman, doubled to left field to bring in designated hitter, Curt Smith, for the final run of the inning.

The T-Bones started to chip away at the Saltdogs’ lead in the third inning with second baseman Marcus Lemon’s RBI single scoring right fielder Chantz Mack. Kansas City trailed 4-1 going into the fourth inning.

Mack brought in two runs in the fourth inning off of an RBI double to center field to cut Lincoln’s lead to 4-3, but the Saltdogs took back a three-run lead in the fifth.

Valera doubled to center field to bring in the first run, while left fielder Brandon Jacobs singled to right field to bring in the second.

A solo home run from third baseman, Jordan Edgerton, in the bottom of the sixth brought the T-Bones within two with three innings to go.

Marcus Lemon, the T-Bones second baseman, advanced the runners with a putout in the bottom of the ninth to put them in scoring position.

American Association home run leader and Kansas City first baseman Kevin Keyes brought in one run with a sacrifice fly to the center fielder. The T-Bones didn’t come back any further and fell 6-5 to the Saltdogs in game one of a three game series.

Right-handed pitcher Derek Gordon (5-2, 2.67) earned the win for the Saltdogs, and the T-Bones’ right-handed pitcher Scott Carroll (5-3, 2.86) suffered the loss. Michael Wagner, a right-handed pitcher, picked up the save for Lincoln.

Matt Sergey (2-1, 3.44), a right-handed pitcher, will start Wednesday night for the T-Bones and right-handed pitcher Robby Rowland (1-1, 5.40) will head to the mound for Lincoln.

The T-Bones (31-24) will continue a 10 game homestand at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday against the Lincoln Saltdogs (35-21) at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Fans can come out to enjoy a game of catch on the field after the game.

Mahomes to make appearance at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in KCK

First-round draft pick Patrick Mahomes, will make an appearance Thursday night, July 20, at CommunityAmerica Ballpark, when the Kansas City T-Bones take on the Lincoln Saltdogs at 7:05 p.m.

Mahomes was drafted as a quarterback by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2017 draft.

The signal caller will appear during the T-Bones game joining fans for in game festivities and will sign free autographs for an hour during the game on the concourse.

Mahomes was drafted with the 10th overall pick in 2017 out of Texas Tech University where he set numerous passing records for the Red Raiders during his career as well as winning the Sammy Baugh Trophy as the top passer in the college ranks. He led the nation in yards per game and passing yards and total offense before forgoing his senior season to enter the draft.

The former Red Raider is also no stranger to baseball, having played in high school and for two years in college, and was the 37th round pick by the Detroit Tigers in the 2014 MLB Draft as right-handed pitcher. His father, Pat Mahomes, pitched professionally in the big leagues for parts of 11 seasons as well as finishing his career in the American Association at Sioux Falls in 2009.

T-Bones close out Canadian trip with 13-2 win

After two frustrating nights at Shaw Park, Sunday afternoon was a different day for Kansas City (31-23) as the T-Bones rolled to a 13-2 win over Winnipeg (31-24) to close out the six-game road trip at 3-3.

The T-Bones got a great starting effort from Chris Perry (2-2) who worked seven solid innings, holding Winnipeg to two runs on two hits with four strike outs and one walk to get the win.

Kansas City got a four-run second inning and never looked back, scoring a run on a wild pitch and a three-run home run blast from Chantz Mack off Goldeye starter Micky O’Brien (6-3) who took the loss.

In the fifth, Kyle Petty, Jordan Edgerton and Joe Jackson each drove in a run on two hits from Petty and Edgerton and a sacrifice fly from Jackson to make it 7-0.

Kevin Keyes hit his second home run of the series in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 9-0.

The T-Bones added two more runs in the eighth and ninth with Winnipeg scoring a run each late in the seventh and eighth.

Marcus Lemon went 3-for-6, Keyes was 4-for-5 and Tyler Horan was 3-for-6 in an 18-hit explosion for Kansas City. Every batter in the T-Bones order had at least one hit in the game.

Jeff Walters worked his third scoreless relief inning since returning from the inactive list on the road trip.

Following an off day Monday, the T-Bones return home Tuesday night, July 18, to open a six-game home stand and the first of a three game series against the Lincoln Saltdogs.
