U.S. Men’s Team to play today in KCK

The U.S. Men’s National Team will play at 8 p.m. Sunday, July 11, at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas.

Gianluca Busio, midfielder for Sporting KC, is on the U.S. Men’s National Team as it plays Haiti in Group B in the opening rounds of the Concacaf Gold Cup tournament.

The game will be on FS1, Univision and TUDN.

The U.S. Men’s Team opens the tournament on July 11 against Haiti, then goes on to play Martinique on July 15 at Children’s Mercy Park, followed by Canada on July 18 at Children’s Mercy Park.

The top two teams in each of four groups will advance to the quarterfinals July 24-25 in Arlington, Texas, and Glendale, Arizona. The semifinals are July 29 in Austin and Houston, followed by the championship match Aug. 1 in Las Vegas.

Busio, age 19, a native of Greensboro, North Carolina, is a homegrown player for Sporting KC. He was the youngest player to sign with a Major League Soccer club. It will be Busio’s first time playing for the U.S. Men’s Team.

Also on the U.S. Men’s Team is Nicholas Gioacchini, a forward. He will be returning to the Kansas City area for the first time since he was 8 years old. A native of Overland Park, Kansas, Gioacchini’s family moved to Italy when he was 8. He launched his career with Paris FC in 2017 and now is a forward for Caen-France.

Sporting KC to be host of LIGA MX team Aug. 10 in Leagues Cup quarterfinals

Major League Soccer and LIGA MX announced today the participants, bracket and schedule for the 2021 Leagues Cup, an annual single-elimination tournament that will feature premier clubs from MLS and Mexico’s top division and build upon the growing rivalry between both leagues.

As one of four MLS clubs in the high-level international competition, Sporting Kansas City will serve as host of either Club Leon or Chivas in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals on Aug. 10 at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas.

The marquee matchup will kick off at 7 p.m. and be shown live nationally on ESPN2 and TUDN.

Tickets for the Leagues Cup quarterfinal showdown are included in Sporting Kansas City season ticket member packages. Season ticket members will have access to an exclusive 24-hour pre-sale for additional tickets to the match beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 8. Tickets for the match will become available to the general public at 10 a.m. Friday, July 9, via SeatGeek.com.

Sporting Kansas City will learn its Leagues Cup quarterfinal opponent on July 18 when Club Leon faces Cruz Azul in the 2021 Campeon de Campeones. If Club Leon wins the match, Sporting will play host to Chivas in the tournament’s opening round and Club Leon will participate in the 2021 Campeones Cup. Should Club Leon lose to Cruz Azul, it will travel to Children’s Mercy Park as the quarterfinal opposition.

The 2021 Leagues Cup will see four MLS clubs matched up against four LIGA MX teams in the quarterfinals, which will unfold from Aug. 10-12. The tournament will be played in its entirety in the United States, with the semifinals slated for Sept. 14-15 and the Leagues Cup Final, to be played at a neutral venue announced in the coming weeks, scheduled for Sept. 22. Further details, including semifinal venues and kickoff times, will be announced following the quarterfinals.

As announced in March, the participating MLS teams in Leagues Cup are the top two finishers from each conference based on the 2020 MLS regular season standings that did not participate in the 2021 Scotiabank Champions League. By this criterion, Sporting joined Orlando City SC, Seattle Sounders FC and New York City FC as the MLS representatives in the tournament.

Similarly, LIGA MX teams joining the 2021 edition of the competition are the top four teams from the combined Apertura 2020 and Clausura 2021 Mexican League regular season standings that did not qualify for the 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League.

Leagues Cup will be broadcast on Univision and ESPN networks and digital platforms in the United States, TSN and TVA Sports in Canada, and Televisa and TUDN platforms in Mexico.

Aug. 10 will mark the first time Sporting has welcomed a LIGA MX foe since April 2019 when manager Peter Vermes’ side advanced to the Concacaf Champions League semifinals. Sporting is 2-1-0 in competitive home matches against Mexican opposition at Children’s Mercy Park, including wins over Cruz Azul (2013-14 CCL quarterfinals) and Deportivo Toluca FC (2019 CCL round of 16) and a loss to CF Monterrey (2019 CCL semifinals).

The most popular team in Mexico and a 12-time first division champion, Chivas notably won the 2018 Concacaf Champions League with current Sporting Kansas City forward Alan Pulido leading its attack. The star striker transferred from Chivas to Sporting ahead of the 2020 season and faces a potential reunion with his former club in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals. Club Leon won its most recent of eight league titles in December 2020, finishing atop the fall season standings with a 12-1-4 record before eliminating Puebla, Chivas and Pumas in the playoffs.

Beyond the rivalry, Leagues Cup has taken on an increased focus for both MLS and LIGA MX clubs. Concacaf announced earlier this year that Leagues Cup will have a qualifying slot to the Concacaf Champions League, starting with the new format in 2023, positioning Leagues Cup as an important part of the North American soccer landscape.

The 2021 Leagues Cup kicks off five weeks of MLS vs. Liga MX matchups throughout the late summer and early fall, with the MLS All-Star Game on Aug. 25 and followed by Campeones Cup on the last week of September.

Late goals put Sporting KC in first place

Goalkeeper Tim Melia had a season-high seven saves and forwards Johnny Russell and Khiry Shelton opened their 2021 scoring accounts with late goals as Sporting Kansas City (8-3-2, 26 points) moved atop the standings with a 2-0 road victory over the LA Galaxy (7-4-0, 21 points) on Sunday night at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

On an evening that saw the Galaxy unleash 18 shot attempts and threaten numerous times over the course of 90 minutes, Melia delivered his finest performance of the year as Russell nodded Sporting ahead in the 81st minute and Shelton put the result out of reach deep into stoppage time.

Sunday’s 2-0 triumph gives Sporting an MLS-leading eighth win of the 2021 campaign and vaults manager Peter Vermes’ men into a first-place tie with Seattle Sounders FC heading into a two-week international break for the Concacaf Gold Cup.

Victors in three straight matches and six of their last eight, Sporting has now bagged three game-winning goals after the 80th minute this season.

Playing on the Fourth of July for the 14th time in team history, Sporting Kansas City rolled out a lineup that featured two changes from last Saturday’s 2-1 home win over LAFC.

Injured right back Jaylin Lindsey made way for Graham Zusi, who notably logged his club-record 300th regular season appearance, while Khiry Shelton started at the center of a three-man attack with Alan Pulido absent due to international obligations with the Mexico Men’s National Team.

Pulido was one of three Mexicans to miss the match for Concacaf Gold Cup duty alongside LA Galaxy duo Efrain Alvarez and Jonathan dos Santos. The Galaxy were hit by an additional loss shortly before kickoff as star striker and MLS Golden Boot leader Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez was a late injury scratch, summoning the insertion of homegrown forward Ethan Zubak.

The visitors survived two early scares within seven minutes. LA threw their first punch by creating a turnover that allowed Samuel Grandsir to deliver a cross from the right wing, but captain Victor Vazquez could only volley his shot inches high at point-blank range.

Shortly thereafter, Grandsir galloped down the sideline and pulled the trigger from the right side of the box, prompting Melia to parry the ball over the crossbar. Melia denied the Frenchman once more midway through the first half, sprawling left to smother his near-post effort.

Sporting gradually gained a foothold of its own, although the Galaxy again went close to taking the lead with a flurry of chances near the half-hour mark.

Kevin Cabral’s leaping header off a floated diagonal delivery from Vazquez carried marginally wide before Melia produced three stops during a breathless sequence. The 35-year-old thwarted Zubak’s header and Vazquez’s low drive through traffic, then Grandsir’s strike rattled through Melia’s legs and skipped a fraction off target.

Shelton provided a spark five minutes into the second half, manhandling his defender and breaking goalward only to see his lunging shot repelled by LA goalkeeper Jonathan Bond. Sporting retained possession on the play and Roger Espinoza’s long-distance blast off a Felipe Hernandez feed skied high.

The Galaxy were back on the front foot in the 56th minute. After Melia punched away Grandsir’s low cross, Vazquez dragged a shot that Zusi cleared off the goal line. Moments later, Julian Araujo’s left-footed piledriver sizzled over the bar and Cabral’s speculative 25-yarder was corralled by Melia.

Grandsir then showcased his blistering pace in the 62nd minute, skipping down the flank and pulling the ball back for Vazquez, but his curler at the top of the box missed by the slimmest of margins. Ilie was next to step up heroically a few minutes later, sticking out a leg to deflect Sebastian Lletget’s stinging strike wide of the mark.

The game turned on its head with 10 minutes remaining. Espinoza’s flick-on header from Gianluca Busio’s set piece was saved by the outstretched Bond, and although Andreu Fontas had lurked to the far post for the rebound, his header on the doorstep pinged off the post.

Sporting was rewarded for its late surge in the 81st minute when Hernandez’s high press forced a Galaxy turnover.

Russell scooped up possession and fired a shot at Bond, who parried the ball into the air. Sporting’s captain reacted instinctively and steered a looping header over the advanced Bond and into the far corner of the gaping net for the match-winner. The goal was Russell’s first since Sept. 23, 2020, and his first on the road since March 17, 2019.

Seeking an equalizer, LA committed numbers forward in the dying embers of the contest and were caught on the counterattack in the 95th minute. Busio’s booming clearance upfield found Shelton, who beat a defender and embarked on a lung-busting breakaway run before finishing coolly past Bond to seal all three points.

Sporting will enjoy a period of rest prior to resuming its regular season campaign on July 21 when the San Jose Earthquakes visits Children’s Mercy Park at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the game are available at SeatGeek.com , including family four-packs, as Vermes’ side begins a busy stretch of late-summer fixtures in the Western Conference.
