Sporting travels to Dallas for tonight’s match

Sitting atop the Western Conference standings, Sporting Kansas City (10-4-4, 34 points) will put their four-game road unbeaten streak on the line Saturday when they visit red-hot FC Dallas (5-7-6, 21 points) in a showdown between MLS originals on Saturday night at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.

Saturday’s contest will kick off at 7:30 p.m. and air live on Bally Sports Kansas City Plus and Bally Sports Midwest Plus, with three hours of live coverage beginning at 7 p.m. Fans can also stream the action on BallySports.com and the new Bally Sports app in addition to receiving in-game updates on the Sporting KC app . Local radio broadcasts will air on Sports Radio 810 WHB and La Grande 1340 AM, with The Final Whistle postgame show immediately following on 810 WHB.

Sporting took sole possession of first place in the West and extended their road unbeaten run to four matches after claiming a 0-0 draw at the Colorado Rapids last Saturday.

Goalkeeper Tim Melia made three saves en route to his third shutout of the season, snapping a 32-game home scoring streak for the Rapids that dated back to 2018.

Sporting leads MLS with five road wins this year and 10 away victories since the start of 2020. The current road unbeaten streak has seen Sporting scalp the LA Galaxy, Seattle Sounders FC and LAFC — three teams presently in playoff position — since the start of July.

Sporting will play seven competitive matches in 22 days between July 31 and Aug. 21. Despite the schedule congestion, manager Peter Vermes will have several well-rested players at his disposal after Melia, Andreu Fontas, Graham Zusi, Roger Espinoza, Alan Pulido and Johnny Russell watched from the sidelines Tuesday as Sporting fell to LIGA MX powerhouse Club Leon in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals.

Led by third-year head coach Luchi Gonzalez, FC Dallas struggled out of the gates in 2021 by losing its first seven away matches. The Texas outfit got back on track with a 4-0 home win over the Galaxy on July 24 and has taken 10 points from their previous four matches, including a 2-1 victory against Sporting on July 31 at Children’s Mercy Park.

Jesus Ferreira has bagged two goals in his last three appearances, fellow homegrown Paxton Pomykal has flourished in midfield, winger Szabolcs Schon has four assists in as many games, and 18-year-old striker Ricardo Pepi has enjoyed a major breakout with eight goals.

FC Dallas has built one of the longest home undefeated streaks in MLS history, extending its run to 18 regular season matches with a 2-0 win in its inaugural meeting with Texas rivals Austin FC at Toyota Stadium last weekend. The home streak began almost exactly one year ago on Aug, 16, 2020, and with a result against Sporting, Dallas would move into a tie for the seventh longest home undefeated run in league history.

Having lost to Dallas 2-1 two weeks ago, Sporting will take a shot at revenge this weekend while also attempting to reverse a noticeable trend in the series.

Dallas is 5-0-1 in the last six regular season meetings since 2019, scoring 15 goals and conceding four. Sporting is 1-5-2 in its last eight visits to Toyota Stadium dating back to 2013 and has won only twice at the venue since the Peter Vermes era began in 2009, prevailing 4-1 in June 2011 and 3-0 in October 2018.

Sporting defenders Nicolas Isimat-Mirin and Jaylin Lindsey will miss out with hamstring issues for an otherwise healthy Sporting squad, while Felipe Hernandez remains unavailable for personal reasons.

Dallas, meanwhile, will be without a trio of youngsters in winger Beni Redzic (ankle) and defenders Justin Che (leg) and Johnny Nelson (back).

Tuesday evening at Children’s Mercy Park, Liga MX team Club Léon scored a lopsided 6-1 win over a Sporting Kansas City lineup composed primarily of reserve players.

The loss knocks Kansas City out of the Leagues Cup, an interleague tournament between Major League Soccer and Liga MX, Mexico’s top-flight league.

In the post-game press conference, head coach Peter Vermes defended his decision to rest most of his starters.

The players aren’t “supermen,” the coach said, and even knowing the final score, he would make the same decision. Player transfers, injuries and the toll of seven matches in 22 days compelled him to find some rest for his team.

Léon’s speed on the attack frequently overwhelmed Kansas City, and their aggressively physical play in the midfield made it difficult for Kansas City to create chances.

Kansas City’s only goal came in the 61st minute from midfielder Cam Duke, who received a pass from the endline from Grayson Barber and slid it into a sliver of opportunity between the defender, goalkeeper and far post from just outside the six-yard box.

A festive contingent of green-clad Léon fans occupied the southeast corner of Children’s Mercy Park, growing louder as the Kansas City fans grew quieter throughout the match.

Club Léon advances to the semifinals of the Leagues Cup, facing off with the winner of Wednesday’s match between Pumas and New York City FC.

Kansas City returns to MLS play, travelling to face FC Dallas on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Sporting KC brings Leagues Cup quarterfinal match to KCK on Tuesday

Tuesday’s showdown is set for 7 p.m. with tickets available on SeatGeek.com and national coverage on ESPN2, TUDN and the ESPN app. Listeners can also catch the match locally on Sports Radio 810 WHB and La Grande 1340 AM, while the Sporting KC mobile app will provide additional in-game updates.

The Leagues Cup is an eight-team, single-elimination tournament involving the top four clubs from both MLS and LIGA MX that did not qualify for the 2021 Concacaf Champions League.

Sporting qualified by virtue of its first-place finish in the Western Conference in the 2020 MLS regular season, while Leon punched its ticket as the third-place finisher in the 2020-21 LIGA MX aggregate table.

The competition will pit four MLS clubs against four LIGA MX teams in the quarterfinals, which will unfold Tuesday through Thursday of this week.

2021 Leagues Cup Quarterfinal Schedule

• Seattle Sounders vs. Tigres | Tuesday, Aug. 10, 9 p.m. (ESPN2, TUDN)
• NYCFC vs. Pumas | Wednesday, Aug. 11, 7 p.m. (ESPN+, TUDN)
• Orlando City vs. Santos | Thursday, Aug. 12, 6 p.m. (ESPN+, TUDN)

The 2021 Leagues Cup will be played entirely in the United States, with the semifinals slated for Sept. 14-15 and the Leagues Cup Final, taking place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, scheduled for Sept. 22.

The winner between Sporting and Leon will advance to meet either New York City FC or Pumas in the semifinals, with fixture details to be announced later this week.

By participating in the Leagues Cup, Sporting has an opportunity to secure its first ever international title at the expense of four stories Mexican sides in Leon, Tigres UANL, Pumas UNAM and Santos Laguna.

Sporting’s best finishes in international tournaments were semifinal showings in the 2002 Concacaf Champions’ Cup and the 2019 Concacaf Champions League. Leon are also seeking a first international trophy to go with their eight Mexican league championships and five Copa MX titles.

Tuesday will mark the first time Sporting has welcomed a LIGA MX foe since April 2019 when manager Peter Vermes’ side advanced to the semifinal stage of the Concacaf Champions League. Sporting is 2-1-0 in competitive home matches against Mexican opposition at Children’s Mercy Park, including wins over Cruz Azul (2013-14 CCL quarterfinals) and Deportivo Toluca FC (2019 CCL round of 16) and a loss to CF Monterrey (2019 CCL semifinals).

Sporting is 8-5-6 at home in international competitions, including a 6-2-2 mark at Children’s Mercy Park.

Midfielder Ilie Sanchez leads the current roster with two goals in international tournaments, both coming in the 2019 Concacaf Champions League. Defender Graham Zusi, meanwhile, leads the current squad with 13 international appearances in a Sporting uniform. He has tallied three assists in those 13 games, one shy of the club’s all-time lead in international competitions.

Sporting striker Alan Pulido is well accustomed to facing Leon, having won multiple trophies with Mexican outfits Tigres UANL and Chivas over the last decade. As a member of Chivas, Pulido notably scored three times in two appearances against Leon in 2019.

The 30-year-old forward is no stranger to club success on the international stage, as he led Chivas to the 2018 Concacaf Champions League title with a goal in the first leg of a dramatic win over Toronto FC in the finals.

Vermes’ men enter Tuesday’s clash occupying first place in Major League Soccer’s Western Conference with a 10-4-4 record. Sporting ranks second in MLS with 1.83 goals per match, thanks in part to the contributions of MLS All-Star Daniel Salloi, whose 15 combined goals (10) and assists (five) lead the league.

As explosive as its attack has been, Sporting relied on a resolute defensive performance to pick up a 0-0 draw at the Colorado Rapids on Saturday as goalkeeper Tim Melia produced three outstanding saves en route to the shutout.

Led by Argentine manager Ariel Holan, who was appointed on May 11, Leon has kicked off the 2021 LIGA MX Apertura campaign with two wins and a loss. They suffered a 4-0 loss at Pachuca on July 24 to open the season but bounced back with one-goal wins over Club Tijuana on July 31 and Queretaro on Aug. 5.

Leon’s roster for the Leagues Cup features a pair of LIGA MX standouts in Angel Mena and William Tesillo, who helped the club to the 2020 Apertura title last December.

Mena, a prolific winger, amassed 17 goals for Leon during the 2020-21 LIGA MX season and has 51 goals for the team in all competitions since the start of 2019. He recently appeared in five matches for Ecuador at the 2021 Copa America in Brazil.

Tesillo, a versatile defender, has been an ever-present fixture for Leon over the last three seasons. The Colombian international started six of seven appearances at the 2021 Copa America as Colombia earned a third-place finish in the tournament. Tesillo and Mena both scored in Leon’s recent victory over Tijuana.
