Sporting drops match to LAFC, 4-0

Sporting Kansas City (11-5-7, 40 points) suffered a 4-0 loss to Los Angeles FC (7-9-6, 27 points) on Friday at Banc of California Stadium, conceding three second-half goals after a 58th minute red card left Sporting a man down for the second straight road match.

Manager Peter Vermes saw his team suffer only its second league loss of the summer, a span that includes 13 regular season games, and it came with midfielder Gadi Kinda and forward Daniel Salloi away on international duty.

Newly signed midfielder Jose Mauri started in his Sporting KC debut, playing 68 minutes in his first action since arriving from Argentina.

Sporting Kansas City threatened to open the scoring in the 17th minute as club captain Johnny Russell cut inside from the right flank and curled a shot from the edge of the penalty area just beyond the far post, but it was the home side — shorthanded themselves with international absences and key players out due to injury — that delivered the first dagger moments later.

Eighteen-year-old rookie Mamadou Fall came forward for a corner kick in the 18th minute and the 6’2 defender headed home the delivery from LAFC playmaker Eduard Atuesta, who featured alongside Salloi in last week’s MLS All-Star Game on his home field. The goal was the first of Fall’s professional career, and his first of two on the night.

Boosted by the early lead, LAFC twice came close to doubling its advantage in the 10 minutes following Fall’s opener. Tim Melia made a save to deny Cal Jennings in the 23rd minute, dropping low to his right to get a hand on the attempt. Six minutes later, Bryce Duke lined up a long-range effort that was struck from 30 yards out but whistled wide of the target.

Despite controlling nearly 62 percent of the possession away from home in the first half and outshooting LAFC 5-3 in the opening 45 minutes, Sporting was put into an all too familiar position with a 1-0 deficit for a 12th time in 2021, and matters were made worse in a controversial three-minute span early in the second stanza.

In the 58th minute, Sporting KC was reduced to 10 men as Roger Espinoza was ejected by referee Drew Fischer after video review. Espinoza was whistled for a foul on Cristian Arango which, after warranting no card from Fischer initially, was subjected to review by Video Assistant Referee Ramy Touchan and was deemed worthy of a straight red card.

LAFC capitalized immediately and found a second goal in the same fashion as the first, albeit this time via a free kick dubiously awarded by Fischer. Atuesta once again provided a pinpoint pass onto the head of Fall at the back post for a well-placed finish from close range. Atuesta earned his team-leading sixth assist of the 2021 season with the set-piece service.

Down a player and down two goals, Sporting Kansas City nearly found a lifeline in the 65th minute. Russell beat his man on the dribble only to be thwarted on the doorstep as LAFC goalkeeper Tomas Romero came off his line to make a sliding save.

Melia made two impressive saves of his own – first with his foot in the 66th minute on an attempt by Arango and then in the 74th minute to deny Danny Musovski — however LAFC ultimately put the game out of reach with a goal from Arango in the 71st minute before the hosts capped off the performance with a penalty from Atuesta in the 87th minute.

Sporting refused to go quietly despite the score and circumstances. After having a goal disallowed in the 80th minute when Ilie was flagged for offside prior to volleying Russell’s free kick into the back of the net, Alan Pulido nearly provided a late consolation goal in the 90th minute and Graham Zusi forced a final save from Romero in the 94th minute.

Still second in the West, Sporting will return home to play host to Chicago Fire FC at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas. Tickets for the cross-conference clash are available online at SeatGeek.com.

Sporting KC to visit LAFC on Friday

porting Kansas City (11-4-7, 40 points) will square off for the third time this season with LAFC (6-9-6, 24 points) in a Western Conference clash on Friday.

Kickoff at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles is set for 9 p.m. with three hours of local coverage beginning at 8:30 p.m. on Bally Sports Kansas City Plus, Bally Sports Midwest Plus, BallySports.com and the Bally Sports app. The contest will also air live nationally in Spanish on UniMas and TUDN while streaming in English at @TUDNUSA on Twitter .

Listeners can catch the action locally on ESPN 94.5 FM and La Grande 1340 AM.

Two points behind Western Conference leaders Seattle Sounders FC, Sporting secured a 1-1 home draw with the third-place Colorado Rapids last Saturday at Children’s Mercy Park.

Captain Johnny Russell bagged a stunning free kick in the 41st minute after Jonathan Lewis had fired Colorado ahead in the 17th minute. Russell, who has four goals and five assists this year, ranks second in MLS with four goals from direct free kicks since the start of 2019. His strike last weekend notably moved him level with Graham Zusi for ninth on the club’s all-time chart with 29 career goals in the regular season.

Sporting has enjoyed tremendous success away from home in 2021 — their 6-3-2 record, 18 goals and plus-eight goal differential are all the second-best road marks in MLS. Sporting is 4-0-2 in its last six away games, outscoring opponents 11-2. With a win or a draw against LAFC, Sporting would equal the club’s longest ever road unbeaten streak in the regular season.

Sporting’s penchant for posting shutouts has coincided with their road form. Thanks to standout displays from goalkeeper Tim Melia, center back Andreu Fontas, the versatile Ilie Sanchez and outside backs Zusi and Luis Martins, Sporting has collected three straight road shutouts for only the fourth time in team history. Another clean sheet on Friday would see Sporting equal the single-season club record of four straight road shutouts set in 2012.

Melia and Fontas have anchored Sporting’s defense over the course of 2021. The former ranks third in MLS with a 0.88 goals against average, conceding just 15 goals in his 17 appearances. Fontas, meanwhile, leads MLS in several advanced statistical categories such as goals added, progressive passing distance and successful pressure percentage.

LAFC, the 2019 Supporters’ Shield champions and 2020 Concacaf Champions League runners-up, are currently mired in a slump. Head coach Bob Bradley’s side is winless in eight straight games since mid-July, the longest skid ever for a team that entered MLS in 2018. LAFC has taken a single point from its last five matches, although it did snap a four-game losing streak with a 3-3 home draw against rivals LA Galaxy last Saturday. While Sporting leads the league with 19 points gained from losing positions in 2021, LAFC has suffered from the opposite narrative: its 19 points dropped from winning positions is the most in MLS.

Both teams will be forced to exercise their squad depth on Friday due to international absences. On the Sporting sideline, MLS All-Star forward Daniel Salloi is with Hungary and midfielder Gadi Kinda is with Israel. Salloi tops the MLS charts with 18 combined goals (12) and assists (six) this year, while Kinda has added four goals and three assists of his own.

LAFC will be without four players, all of whom play significant roles on the team. Brian Rodriguez, who scored twice last weekend against the Galaxy, has joined Uruguay and Kim Moon-Hwan, who scored in a 2-1 loss to Sporting on June 26, is with South Korea. Ecuador duo Jose Cifuentes and Diego Palacios will also be unavailable for selection.

Additionally, prolific LAFC winger Diego Rossi has left the club to join Turkish side Fenerbahce at the close of the European transfer window. The status of standout forward Carlos Vela is also up in the air, as the Mexican missed the MLS All-Star Game on Aug. 25 and the Galaxy match three days later with a quad injury.

Sporting will be looking to complete a three-game sweep of LAFC after claiming wins in both previous meetings this year. Salloi and Alan Pulido struck in a 2-1 home win at the end of June as well as a 4-1 victory on Aug. 4, which stands as LAFC’s heaviest defeat ever at Banc of California Stadium.

Martins and Kinda also scored in the one-sided encounter, which served as the first of four consecutive defeats for LAFC to open the month of August. Only the LA Galaxy (five wins) have more all-time regular season victories against LAFC than Sporting’s four (4-2-0 record).

Sporting Kansas City came back from an early deficit to post a 1-1 draw against the Colorado Rapids Saturday evening at Children’s Mercy Park. The stadium was packed and loud for the weekend match.

Colorado took the lead in the 17th minute. Jonathan Lewis knocked back the rebound of his own shot to get the score.

Johnny Russell scored the equalizer in the 41st minute on a free kick just outside the penalty area, floating the ball over the wall of Colorado defenders and into the corner of the net.

After the match, Russell discussed his approach to the kick.

“Just tried to get a good connection,” the Scottish forward said. “Make it clean, make sure it got up and down in time and managed to tuck it away.”

Sporting KC had the better of the Rapids for the remainder of the match and attempted 20 shots to only 8 for Colorado. Rapids goalkeeper William Yarbrough saved 7 shots and a few other Sporting chances were just wide of the goal.

Head coach Peter Vermes praised the team’s effort after the game, despite the missed opportunity for a win.

“I can’t say anything but great things about the guys’ effort and their commitment,” said the coach. “It was a really high, high level performance today. Their attitude and their mentality and to play the way they did as long as they did was a heck of a performance from that perspective.”

The single point from the draw keeps Kansas City in second place in the MLS Western Conference standings, and they continue their streak of six unbeaten games.

Sporting Kansas City plays next at Los Angeles FC at 9 p.m. Sept. 3. Their next home game is at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 11  against the Chicago Fire.
