Minnesota United visits Sporting KC on Wednesday

The fight for Western Conference supremacy will continue in earnest at 7:30 p.m. today when second-place Sporting Kansas City (12-5-7, 43 points) welcomes regional rivals Minnesota United FC (8-7-7, 31 points) to Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas.

Tickets for the match are available at SeatGeek.com as Sporting and Minnesota lock horns in the second of three head-to-head meetings this season.

Led by 13th-year manager Peter Vermes, Sporting kept within two points of Western Conference leaders Seattle Sounders FC by claiming a 2-0 home win over Chicago Fire FC on Saturday.

Sporting struck twice in the first six minutes — its fastest two goals ever in a regular season match — as midfielder Jose Mauri scored on his Children’s Mercy Park debut before captain Johnny Russell bagged his fifth goal of the 2021 campaign.

By propelling his team to the shutout on Saturday, goalkeeper Tim Melia has equaled an MLS record by posting 10 wins in seven consecutive regular seasons. Melia has served as a vital part of an improving Sporting defense that has four shutouts in its last seven games, with center back Andreu Fontas, Ilie Sanchez, Graham Zusi and left back Luis Martins all contributing.

On the opposite end of the pitch, Sporting’s balanced attack has the club ranking second in MLS with 39 goals this season. MLS All-Star Daniel Salloi is tied for second in MLS with 18 combined goals (12) and assists (six), Alan Pulido has amassed eight goals and three assists, and the in-form Russell has five goals and five assists.

Minnesota lost its first four matches in 2021. The return of goalkeeper Tyler Miller between the posts has coincided with an undeniable uptick, as the Loons have gone 8-3-7 with a league-best 0.83 goals against average since May 12.

Minnesota has yet to click on all cylinders offensively despite ranking third in MLS in both shots and chances created per match — its 24 goals are second fewest in the Western Conference — but Emanuel Reynoso (two goals, six assists) and Adrien Hunou (four goals) are capable of turning a game in their team’s favor.

Fans have billed the ongoing battle between Sporting and Minnesota as “the nicest rivalry in sports,” although it has not always matched what has transpired on the field. In the most recent meeting between the teams on Aug. 21 at Allianz Field, Sporting midfielder Remi Walter was controversially sent off with a first-half red card and the rest of the game was marred by chippy confrontations between players on both sides.

The Midwestern rivalry has seen Sporting and Minnesota square off 15 times in all competitions over the last five seasons, a number will grow to at least 17 by the end of the year. In addition to meeting on Wednesday, Sporting will travel to Minnesota once more on Oct. 31 in the penultimate weekend of the regular season.

Sporting owns a 7-5-3 record against the Loons in all competitions, including a perfect 5-0-0 regular season home record. In those five matches, Sporting has posted four shutouts and outscored Minnesota by a combined 11-1. In 10 regular season appearances against the Loons, Melia boasts a 6-2-2 record with five shutouts and a 0.61 goals against average.

Minnesota claimed a three-goal road win over Sporting in the Audi 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs last December. Reynoso assisted each goal in the game as Minnesota built an unassailable 3-0 lead before halftime.

Both clubs will have absences to account for on Wednesday. On the Sporting sideline, Jaylin Lindsey and Felipe Hernandez remain long-term absentees and Pulido is listed as questionable with a knee ailment. Minnesota, meanwhile, will be without two key players through suspension — veteran midfielder Osvaldo Alonso and defender Chase Gasper — as well as the injured quartet of Juan Agudelo, Hassani Dotson, Niko Hansen and Justin McMaster. Influential midfielder Robin Lod, who leads the team with six goals this year, is questionable with a calf strain.

Bally Sports Kansas City Plus, Bally Sports Midwest Plus, BallySports.com and the Bally sports app will provide three hours of live coverage beginning at 7 p.m., while Sports Radio 810 WHB (English) and La Grande 1340 AM (Spanish) will air local radio calls with The Final Whistle postgame show immediately following on 810 WHB. Supporters can access the Sporting KC app for additional in-game updates.

In conjunction with Wednesday’s contest, The Victory Project will hold its annual broadcast auction as Bally Sports Kansas City promotes a premier fundraiser for Sporting Kansas City’s charitable foundation dedicated to helping children faced with life’s challenges. By visiting VictoryKC.org/auction, supporters in attendance and watching from home will have the opportunity to bid on a variety of signed Sporting gear and limited-edition items. All proceeds from the auction will go directly to The Victory Project.

Sporting Kansas City made two early goals stand up for a 2-0 shutout win against the Chicago Fire at Children’s Mercy Park on Friday evening.

Newly signed midfielder Jose Mauri, in his first home appearance for Sporting, scored the first goal in the 4th minute. He took a gamble on a low-percentage shot from a few yards outside the penalty area.

Mauri’s chance paid off when Chicago goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth, although well-positioned to make the save, let the ball slide underneath him and into the net.

Two minutes later, Johnny Russell, in his 100th regular season match for Kansas City, received the gift of an easy goal. The rebound from a Daniel Salloi shot came to him in front of the empty Chicago net, and a quick tap-in bagged Russell his fifth goal of the season.

Though the two quick scores made it look as though Sporting would walk away with the match, that was far from the case. Chicago made defensive adjustments that slowed the Kansas City offense, and in the second half, Chicago took the fight back to the other end of the pitch.

Some heroic saves by Kansas City goalkeeper Tim Melia and a couple shots that bounced off the crossbar were needed to keep Chicago off the scoreboard. The clean sheet was the team’s first at home since May.

The win moves Kansas City back into second place in the MLS Western Conference, two points behind Seattle.

The match with Chicago is the first of three consecutive home matches. With Colorado a single point behind in the standings and holding two games in hand, Sporting hopes to maximize their results in the three-game home stand.

The next match will take place against Minnesota United at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 15.

Chicago visits Sporting KC tonight in KCK

Sporting Kansas City’s pursuit of first place in the Western Conference will continue tonight when the club plays host to Chicago Fire FC in its final Saturday home game of the 2021 regular season at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday and tickets for the match are available at SeatGeek.com.

Saturday’s cross-conference clash will air live on Bally Sports Kansas City Plus and Bally Sports Midwest Plus with three hours of live coverage beginning at 7 p.m. The match will also stream live on BallySports.com and the Bally Sports app while airing locally on Sports Radio 810 WHB and La Grande 1340 AM, with The Final Whistle postgame show immediately following on 810 WHB. The Sporting KC app will provide additional in-game updates.

Sporting will observe the 20-year remembrance of the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States. Pilots from the 303rd Fighter Squadron at Whiteman Air Force Base will perform a Children’s Mercy Park stadium flyover at the conclusion of the national anthem and receive formal recognition during a halftime ceremony.

Led by 13th-year manager Peter Vermes, Sporting (11-5-7, 40 points) sits two points out of first place in the Western Conference after seeing its six-game unbeaten run end with a loss at LAFC last Friday.

Chicago (6-11-5, 23 points), marshaled by second-year head coach Raphael Wicky, occupies 11th place in the East — seven points below the playoff line and in danger of missing the postseason for the fourth straight year — after securing its first road win of the 2021 campaign with a 1-0 result at the New York Red Bulls on Aug. 28.

Seeking its third first-place finish in the West over the last four seasons, Sporting enters the weekend with a club-record 26-game home scoring streak that dates back to August 2019.

Captain Johnny Russell — on the brink of his 100th regular season appearance for the club — extended that streak with a free kick in a 1-1 draw against the Colorado Rapids on Aug. 28.

The Scottish winger is part of a potent offense — further bolstered by Alan Pulido (eight goals, three assists), Daniel Salloi (12 goals, six assists) and Gadi Kinda (four goals, three assists) — that ranks second in MLS with 37 goals. Salloi and Kinda have returned to Kansas City this week and will be available for selection Saturday after representing Hungary and Israel, in 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying during the September FIFA window.

In addition to welcoming Salloi and Kinda back to the team, Sporting has received a defensive boost with center back Nicolas Isimat-Mirin no longer on the club’s injury report. The Frenchman has missed the last month with a hamstring ailment and has performed admirably in his seven starts this season.

Vermes will have to adjust the lineup for the absence of midfielder Roger Espinoza due to suspension, while defender Jaylin Lindsey is out with a hamstring issue and Felipe Hernandez remains absent for personal reasons.

On the opposite sideline, Chicago is led by Serbian attacking midfielder Luka Stojanovic, whose seven goals this year are four more than any other player on the team. Striker Robert Beric finished second in the MLS Golden Boot race in 2020 but has managed just three goals in 22 appearances this season, while midfielder Alvaro Medran has chipped in a team-best five assists on 44 chances created.

Defensively, goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth is fourth in MLS with 69 saves and center back Francisco Calvo is second in the league with 48 interceptions. Calvo is one of three Chicago players listed as questionable for Saturday’s game (thigh) alongside winger Ignacio Aliseda (shin) and homegrown teenager Brian Gutierrez (ankle).

Chicago has a 5-34-15 record in 54 regular season road matches since the start of 2018, managing just five shutouts in those 54 matches. The team’s five away wins over the last four seasons are tied with Houston Dynamo FC for the fewest in MLS, excluding recent expansion teams Nashville SC and Austin FC.

Chicago has played a prominent role as a key antagonist in the context of Sporting’s illustrious history. Kansas City defeated Chicago 1-0 in the 2000 MLS Cup and 2004 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup title while also edging the Fire for the 2000 Supporters’ Shield by virtue of greater goal differential after finishing level on points.

More recently, Sporting has dominated the head-to-head series with a 4-0-1 record in the last five meetings. Vermes’ men are also 6-0-2 in the last eight home games against Chicago, with the Fire last winning at Children’s Mercy Park in June 2012.

The teams battled twice in 2020 as Sporting came away with a 1-0 home win on Oct. 7 before scrapping to a 2-2 draw 10 days later in Chicago.
