Sporting Kansas City moved into fourth place in the Western Conference with a 1-0 win over the Chicago Fire on Sunday at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan.

Paulo Nagamura came off the bench to score the game’s lone goal with a header in the 75th minute, while Tim Melia made three saves for his first career MLS shutout and first career MLS win in his Sporting KC debut.

Sporting KC took the field for the first time in the team’s new all-white third kits – in front of the stadium’s 58th consecutive MLS sellout crowd and a national television audience on ESPN2- for the 50th all-time regular season meeting against the rival Fire.

Chicago entered with wins in each of their last three matches, but saw that streak snapped by a Sporting KC side that has held the Fire scoreless in four of the past five meetings in KC.

Melia played a starring role in the clean sheet as he made his first appearance since being acquired in the offseason after five seasons split between Real Salt Lake (2010-2011) and Chivas USA (2012-2014).

The 28-year-old was called into action in the eighth minute to thwart a goalward cross from David Accam, then again five minutes later to push away Guly’s left-footed effort from the edge of the penalty area and a third time to smother a header from Eric Gehrig in the 19th minute.

Sporting Kansas City’s best two scoring chances of the first half came two minutes apart on headers from Dom Dwyer and Kevin Ellis. Benny Feilhaber’s chipped cross in the 31st minute was met by a diving header from Dwyer that carried over the crossbar from six yards out.

Dwyer, who leads MLS with 30 fouls won in 2015, earned a free kick a minute later that Feilhaber placed perfectly into the path of Ellis only to see the header hammer off the crossbar.

After attempting 11 shots in the first half, Sporting Kansas City was limited to only three shots in the second beginning when Seth Sinovic forced a strong save from Sean Johnson in the 50th minute.

Manager Peter Vermes inserted Nagamura as his first of three substitutes in the 65th minute and the move paid dividends 10 minutes later as the Brazilian provided the breakthrough moment with the first headed goal of his 11-year MLS career.

Fellow newcomer Jalil Anibaba delivered the cross from the right flank and Nagamura did the rest, snapping his header inside the far post to finish off a 12-pass sequence for the 13th goal of his career and his first game-winning goal since 2009.

Graham Zusi was credited with the secondary assist on the play, claiming sole possession of second place on the club’s all-time charts with 17 game-winning assists.

Chicago’s bid for a late equalizer became a taller task when Accam, one of three designated players for the Fire, was sent off in the 89th minute with a straight red card issued for a foul on Anibaba.

Chicago captain Jeff Larentowicz was at the center of his team’s final two forays forward, looping a header wide in the 93rd minute off a corner kick from Shaun Maloney and then going down after a collision with Matt Besler inside the penalty area on the final play of the game.

Sporting Kansas City will now travel to the nation’s capital to face Eastern Conference leaders D.C. United at 6 p.m. on Saturday at RFK Stadium. The match will be shown live locally on KMCI-TV 38 the Spot and across the Midwest on SKCTV with coverage beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Sporting KC back home Sunday to meet Chicago Fire at Sporting Park

With two consecutive road matches in the books, Sporting Kansas City returns home to face the Chicago Fire at 4 p.m. on Sunday at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan., in a nationally televised match on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes.

Tied for fifth place in the Western Conference (2-2-4, 10 points), Sporting KC will play host to Chicago as an intra-conference opponent for the first time since 2004.

Peter Vermes’ men have yet to lose at Sporting Park this season (1-0-3) and are unbeaten in four straight home games against the Fire. Midfielder Benny Feilhaber enters the match in a rich vein of form, leading MLS with five assists and recording his first MLS brace-including an MLS Goal of the Week nominee-in last Saturday’s 4-4 draw at the Houston Dynamo. First-year forward Krisztian is also on an uptick with three goals in the team’s last four matches.

Chicago (3-3-0, 9 points) missed out on the 2014 playoffs en route to an MLS record 18 draws last season and opened this year with three consecutive defeats.

Since then, however, Frank Yallop’s side has rattled off three straight home victories with two shutouts from U.S. international goalkeeper Sean Johnson.

Homegrown midfielder Harry Shipp, who earned an MLS Rookie of the Year nomination in 2014, leads the Fire with three assists, while first-year designated players Shaun Maloney and David Accam have both opened their scoring accounts.

Radio partners Sports Radio 810 WHB and La Grande 1340 AM will provide live broadcasts of the rivalry match. A limited number of tickets are available online at Ticketmaster.com, and the first 10,000 fans through the gates will receive Sporting KC rally towels.

Sporting Kansas City team members will wear its new third uniform on Sunday at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan. Sporting KC will play Chicago Fire on Sunday.

It will be a monochromatic white and metallic silver jersey, according to a spokesman for the club.

The public will be able to purchase the jerseys on Sunday, according to the spokesman.

In conjunction with the jersey launch, a Sporting Style pop-up store will open in the Boulevard Members Club inside Sporting Park from noon to 6 p.m. from Monday through Saturday starting on May 4. The limited edition third kit – also sold in youth and women’s replica versions – will be available along with a matching anthem jacket, henley shirt and team scarf.

The collared jersey’s signature argyle pattern, an iconic element from the third kit of the past two years, is showcased across the chest and is incorporated atop the back of the uniform, as well as on the reverse side of the socks. The silver metallic color scheme further showcases the player names and numbers, two MLS Cup championship stars above the club crest and all four distinctive logos: Ivy Funds, adidas, Sporting KC and MLS.

“With the success of our previous third kit, we wanted to create the evolution of this look,” said John Moncke, Sporting KC’s vice president of stadium-brand revenue. “Our collection of kits are typically classic with a modern edge, but this look leans more on the modern side. Argyle has become an important brand element and we gave it a reflective metallic treatment. White and metallic silver are a very clean combination.”

The third kit – to be exclusively worn with corresponding white shorts and white socks – accompanies Sporting Kansas City’s new primary uniform which launched for the team’s 20th season in 2015, in addition to the striped secondary jersey introduced last year.
