Sporting KC’s eight-game unbeaten streak ends with 2-1 loss to Real Salt Lake

Two years after scoring in the final minute at Rio Tinto Stadium for a 2-1 win over Real Salt Lake, Sporting Kansas City’s fortunes were reversed on Sunday as the club’s eight-game unbeaten run was snapped in dramatic fashion.

Real Salt Lake forward Olmes Garcia scored in the 93rd minute on a fortuitous deflection to secure his team’s first win in the series since 2011.

The Western Conference rivals exchanged goals in the first half with Real Salt Lake Designated Player Sebastian Jaime opening the scoring in the 15th minute and Dom Dwyer equalizing for Sporting Kansas City 15 minutes later.

The score remained level until Garcia – 10 minutes after entering the match as a second-half substitute – struck a low shot that skipped off the foot of Kevin Ellis and carried over goalkeeper Tim Melia to match the latest game-winning goal in Real Salt Lake history.

Each goalkeeper – formerly teammates during the 2010 and 2011 seasons – made four saves on the night, beginning with Nick Rimando in the fifth minute to push a shot from Roger Espinoza over the bar.

On the opposite end, Justen Glad’s header came close to crossing the goalline on a corner kick from Javier Morales in the 10th minute, however Benny Feilhaber reacted well to head the ball away from danger at the final moment.

Five minutes later, it was again Morales’ delivery that set up a teammate and this time produced the home side’s breakthrough. Morales drew the free kick opportunity inside the attacking half and lofted in a cross for his fellow countryman to head home as Jaime’s shot kissed the underside of the crossbar on its way into the back of the net.

The woodwork wasn’t as kind in the 25th minute as Devon Sandoval saw a header of his own crash into the post from eight yards out, a miss that loomed large when Sporting KC drew even five minutes later.

Feilhaber attracted the attention of Glad and subsequently slipped a through ball into the space vacated by the central defender to earn his League-leading eighth assist of the season as Dwyer made no mistake with a sliding first-time finish past Rimando.

Dwyer is now one of three Sporting KC players with five goals in 2015 – a feat not seen in all of 2014 for the club – and has scored in each of his past three road games. Dwyer now has 31 career MLS goals (including postseason) and nearly grabbed his second of the night in the 64th minute, snapping his header downward off a cross from Jalil Anibaba only to be turned away by the quick reflexes of Rimando.

Melia, who suffered his first loss (5-1-2) since earning the starting role, made his best two saves of the match in the final 15 minutes by twice denying Sandoval. His foot save in the 76th minute did enough to direct an attempt from point-blank range over the crossbar; then in the 92nd minute he sprawled high to his right to keep Sandoval’s header out of the net.

The Real Salt Lake pressure paid off a minute later, however, as Garcia scored his first goal since August of 2014 to secure all three points for RSL. Sporting Kansas City’s three losses remain fewest in MLS with the team’s last two defeats coming on goals conceded in the 93rd and 94th minutes.

Sporting Kansas City will now return home to play host to the Colorado Rapids at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, at Sporting Park. A limited number of tickets are available via Ticketmaster.com and the first 10,000 fans inside the gates will receive a Sporting KC cinch bag.

Sporting KC to meet Real Salt Lake Sunday in Salt Lake City

Unbeaten in eight games across all competition, Sporting Kansas City (6-2-6, 3rd place) will resume the team’s regular season campaign against Real Salt Lake (4-5-6, 9th place) at Rio Tinto Stadium in a Father’s Day edition of MLS Soccer Sunday.

The Week 16 finale will be nationally televised at 9 p.m. on FOX Sports 1 to conclude 12 straight hours of soccer coverage on the network.

The Western Conference match-up features two teams that have reached the postseason in each of the last four years, highlighted by a meeting in the 2013 MLS Cup final. Sporting Kansas City prevailed in a penalty kick shootout and is unbeaten in five straight against RSL dating back to 2012. Seven of the 11 starters for each team in MLS Cup 2013 remain on their rosters ahead of Sunday’s rematch.

The clubs have played back-to-back scoreless stalemates since squaring off in MLS Cup, including this year’s lone encounter in April at Sporting Park. Real Salt Lake was missing Designated Players Joao Plata and Sebastian Jaime, both of whom have since returned from injury, and was held without a shot on goal for only the fourth time in team history.

Real Salt Lake has been shutout seven times through 15 games in 2015, most in MLS and matching the team’s total from all of last season, but has salvaged points in four of those seven matches courtesy of 0-0 results. Goalkeeper Nick Rimando has kept the most clean sheets in MLS history (121) and, along with RSL captain Kyle Beckerman, led all active players in MLS appearances.

His counterpart on Sunday, Tim Melia, returns to face his former club after beginning his MLS career with Real Salt Lake from 2010 to 2011. Melia is unbeaten (5-0-2) with a 0.43 goals against average since becoming the starting goalkeeper for Sporting Kansas City in May and is riding a 386-minute shutout streak after recording his fourth consecutive shutout in Tuesday’s 1-0 victory over St. Louis FC (USL) in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

Chance Myers returned to the field on Tuesday after a year-long absence and Sporting Kansas City is now set to welcome back striker Krisztian Nemeth (Hungary) and homegrown defender Erik Palmer-Brown (US U-20’s) from international duty. Nemeth, the reigning MLS Player of the Month, leads the team with six goals this season, while Benny Feilhaber is second in MLS with seven assists and has goals in three of his last four MLS matches.

Led by Jeff Cassar, Real Salt Lake has lost just twice in 25 MLS matches (including postseason) at Rio Tinto Stadium since he became head coach prior to the 2014 season. Sporting Kansas City handed RSL its first loss at the venue in 2009 and won there in the team’s most recent trip in 2013 with a 97th-minute game winner.

RSL will likely be without four central defenders — Jamison Olave, Chris Schuler, Elias Vasquez and Justen Glad — on Sunday due to injury and international duty, leaving Cassar with two available centerbacks in Phanuel Kavita and Aaron Maund. Kavita made his professional debut on Tuesday in Real Salt Lake’s 2-1 win over Seattle Sounders FC 2 (USL) in the U.S. Open Cup, replacing fellow homegrown signing Justen Glad.

Sunday’s affair will be the third MLS match in Sporting KC’s 20-year history to fall on Father’s Day and the first since 1999 when Chris Henderson set a team record with four assists in a 6-0 victory over New York at Arrowhead Stadium.

Local radio listeners can tune in to La Grande 1340 AM for the live match broadcast and/or Sports Radio 810 WHB for The Final Whistle postgame show. In-game updates will also be available at SportingKC.com/GameOn, via Twitter courtesy of @SKCGameday and through the Sporting Club Uphoria mobile app.

Sporting KC wins 1-0, advances in U.S. Open Cup

Sporting Kansas City advanced to the Round of 16 in the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a 1-0 victory over St. Louis FC on Tuesday at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan.

Graham Zusi scored the game’s only goal, heading home a cross from Benny Feilhaber in the 70th minute, while Tim Melia earned his fourth straight shutout.

The club’s pursuit of a third U.S. Open Cup title will continue on June 30 or July 1 with the Round of 16 draw to be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday via USsoccer.com to determine the opponent, date and location. If Sporting Kansas City is awarded the right to host, the match will again be included in season ticket packages as Special Game A and single-game tickets will go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. on Friday via Ticketmaster.com.

In front of 19,298 fans – the largest fourth round crowd in the tournament’s modern era and a new club record for the competition – Sporting Kansas City eliminated its cross-state rivals in the team’s first competitive match against an opponent from St. Louis.

With the win, Sporting Kansas City extends its unbeaten streak to eight games and remains unbeaten (6-0-1) all-time in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 32.

Zusi, a three-time MLS All-Star and World Cup veteran, was active in the attack as Sporting Kansas City sustained possession throughout Tuesday’s performance.

His free kick found Dom Dwyer in the 17th minute only to see the Dwyer’s header crash into the crossbar and then Zusi had a header of his own cleared off the line by Mike Ambersley on the final chance of a scoreless first half.

St. Louis FC goalkeeper Mark Pais made three saves on Tuesday with his best moment coming in the 56th minute. Pais, who was on the bench for the Des Moines Menace in a 2013 U.S. Open Cup match at Sporting Park, reacted well to palm away an inadvertent deflection off defender Sam Fink.

The breakthrough goal came with 20 minutes to play as two of Major League Soccer’s best playmakers combined for the game-winning goal.

Feilhaber delivered a curling cross met by Zusi with a glancing header from close range for his second goal of the season and third career U.S. Open Cup tally. Feilhaber now has eight assists across all competition, most among all Sporting KC players.

The USL expansion side, facing an MLS opponent for the first time, was held without a shot on goal on Tuesday, though weren’t without scoring opportunities despite missing the team’s leading scorer (Bryan Gaul) due to suspension. Melia raced well outside his penalty area in the 12th minute to win the ball versus Jermie Lynch with a sliding challenge.

Lynch again threatened at the 63-minute mark, snapping a header over the crossbar from six yards out on a cross from Chicago Fire loanee Patrick Doody. Twenty minutes later, Ambersley came close with his effort to equalize, however the left-footed shot sailed high of the near post.

Sporting Kansas City (6-2-6, 3rd place) will resume their regular season campaign against Real Salt Lake (4-5-6, 9th place) at 9 p.m. on Sunday at Rio Tinto Stadium. The Soccer Sunday match-up will be nationally televised on FOX Sports 1 and features two teams that have reached the postseason in each of the last five years, highlighted by a meeting in the 2013 MLS Cup final.
