Sporting KC plays to scoreless draw in New York

A resolute defensive performance propelled Sporting Kansas City (2-6-3, 9 points) to a 0-0 draw against New York City FC (4-3-2, 14 points) on Saturday evening at rain-drenched Citi Field in Queens, New York.

New York City FC entered the chilly night on a torrid three-game winning streak that had produced 14 goals, but the reigning MLS Cup champions were stymied by a disciplined Sporting outfit that snapped its seven-match road losing streak dating back to 2021 and secured its third consecutive draw.

Goalkeeper Tim Melia collected his fourth shutout of the season and totaled three saves—reaching 600 regular season saves during his storied career in Kansas City—and Sporting picked up a valiant result ahead of Tuesday’s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup clash versus FC Dallas at Children’s Mercy Park. The Round of 32 matchup will kick off at 7:30 p.m. with tickets available at SeatGeek.com.

Diverting from his trademark 4-3-3 formation against Sky Blues, Sporting manager Peter Vermes assembled his side in a 4-3-1-2 setup with captain Johnny Russell deployed as a central attacking midfielder behind forwards Daniel Salloi and Khiry Shelton. The midfield trio of Roger Espinoza, Remi Walter and Uri Rosell remained unchanged from last weekend’s 2-2 home draw with FC Dallas, while Sporting’s backline featured one fresh face as Academy product Cam Duke replaced the injured Graham Zusi.

A rip-roaring start saw Sporting nearly score twice within the first two minutes. Salloi dashed onto Melia’s booming delivery over the top and smashed a venomous volley that New York City gloveman Sean Johnson parried aside. On the ensuing corner kick, center back Kortne Ford latched onto Remi Walter’s in-swinging corner kick and glanced a header inches wide of the left post.

An end-to-end spectacle continued to unfold as NYCFC landed its first threat in the seventh minute. Right back Tayvon Gray was afforded space to swing in a low cross that midfielder Keaton Parks steered high and wide of the mark near the penalty area.

Salloi and NYCFC striker Heber exchanged audacious scoring attempts on either side of the 15-minute mark, with Ford doing well to block the latter’s volley inside the box.

Sporting had Melia to thank for the game remaining scoreless in the 34th minute. NYCFC created a turnover near midfield and broke forward with pace as Santiago Rodriguez darted his way into the box and sliced past Ford before pulling the trigger. Melia advanced off his line, sprawled low and spread himself to make the all-important save and keep the hosts off the scoreboard.

Undeterred by the scare, the visitors punched back by going agonizingly close to breaking the deadlock themselves. With 40 minutes on the clock, Shelton separated himself from his marker and whipped in a cross to Salloi for a lunging strike that was bound for the back of the net, but Johnson reacted with a right-handed stop by touching the ball onto the post and allowing for a subsequent NYCFC clearance.

NYCFC playmaker Maxi Moralez was summoned at halftime to replace Thiago Andrade and was involved in the buildup of a fleeting chance for the Sky Blues. Talles Magno was isolated on the left wing and cut the ball back to Rodriguez, whose long-range belter screamed wide of Melia’s left-hand post.

Not long later, Talles Magno saw the ball drop fortuitously to his feet on the edge of the six-yard area, but center back Robert Voloder intervened crucially by sticking out his foot and extinguishing the danger.

Following a pedestrian quarter-hour of action, both sides had goalscoring bids narrowly thwarted. In the 75th minute, Russell emerged from a scrap and unleashed a shot that took a wicked deflection goalward, but Johnson reacted well to smother the ball with both mitts. At the opposite end, Parks uncorked a left-footed sledgehammer at the top of the box that sizzled marginally wide of the frame.

The match remained goalless, and although NYCFC substitute Gabriel Pereira had a decent look from 20 yards in the 90th minute, his shot lacked the pace and direction to beat Melia.

Sporting KC visits New York Saturday

Sporting Kansas City (2-6-2, 8 points) will embark on the club’s busiest stretch of the season with a road trip to face reigning MLS Cup champion New York City FC (4-3-1, 13 points) at 6 p.m. Saturday at Citi Field in New York.

The cross-conference clash will be the club’s first of potentially seven matches in a span of 22 days and kicks off a cross-country trek featuring matches in New York (May 7), Kansas City (May 10) and Portland (May 14) in the week ahead.

Saturday’s showdown will be locally televised on 38 The Spot with three hours of coverage beginning at 5:30 p.m. The broadcast will also stream live on SportingKC.com and in the Sporting KC app for viewers in Kansas and Missouri (excluding St. Louis area per MLS policy), as well as ESPN+ for out-of-market subscribers.

Local radio broadcasts will also air on Sports Radio 810 WHB and La Grande 1340 AM.

Sporting Kansas City will be in pursuit of the team’s first road result of the season — suffering losses in each of the club’s last seven away matches dating back to 2021 — in a first-ever trip to Citi Field. NYCFC have played home matches at five different stadiums in four different states this year, and will add a sixth home venue next week in the U.S. Open Cup.

After going a club-record 20 straight regular season matches without a draw, Sporting is coming off back-to-back ties amidst a five-game winless stretch in the month of April. Most recently, SKC rallied for a 2-2 draw against FC Dallas last weekend with club captain Johnny Russell opening the scoring and MLS All-Star Daniel Salloi providing the equalizer.

Salloi will be up against fellow 2021 MLS MVP finalist Valentin Castellanos, who leads his side with nine goals in all competitions this season and leads all MLS players in shots (34) and shots on goal (14).

The 23-year-old Argentine headlines a youthful and potent New York City FC offense that recently added 20-year-old Brazilian winger Gabriel Pereira — who has come off the bench to score in the team’s last two matches — to an attacking corps that already features a trio of other players who have four or more goals in all competitions in 2022: 21-year-old Brazilian forward Thiago Andrade, 21-year-old Uruguayan midfielder Santiago Rodriguez and 19 -year-old Brazilian playmaker Talles Magno.

The highest scoring team in the Eastern Conference, NYCFC is coming off three straight home wins and has scored 14 goals in those three games, which is tied for second-most in MLS history over a three-match span. The club has been particularly dangerous at home as it averages an MLS-best 3.6 goals per game in home matches this season.

On the opposite end of the field, NYCFC added Brazilian centerback Thiago Martins — who won league titles in Brazil and Japan — as a designated player in the offseason after winning MLS Cup in a penalty shootout in which Sean Johnson produced two saves en route to being named MLS Cup MVP. The NYCFC captain has clean sheets in two of his past three matches and now has 79 career regular season shutouts, one shy of tying Bill Hamid for sixth most in MLS all-time.

Sporting Kansas City’s captain is also on the cusp of moving his name up in the record books as Russell’s next regular season goal will see him equal Sporting Legends Davy Arnaud and Josh Wolff for third most in team history. Tim Melia, too, is approaching a milestone moment as the former MLS Goalkeeper of the Year is three saves shy of 600 for the club in the regular season.

Saturday will mark the first time Sporting has faced a reigning MLS Cup champion in over three years and the first time SKC has played NYCFC since July 2019. After Sporting earned victories in the first two meetings with New York City in 2015 and 2016, NYCFC has won each of the past three matches.

Sporting will be without four key players on Saturday due to injury. Designated players Gadi Kinda and Alan Pulido are sidelined for the season following knee surgeries, while defenders Graham Zusi (thigh) and Nicolas Isimat-Mirin (concussion) were each forced to exit in the first half of the team’s two most recent matches. Conversely, New York City FC is expected to miss only defender Anton Tinnerholm as the Swedish right back continues his recovery from a ruptured Achilles tendon last October.

Sporting KC signs goalkeeper again

Sporting Kansas City has re-signed goalkeeper John Pulskamp to a three-year MLS contract through 2025 with an option for 2026, the club announced.

Pulskamp has made 37 combined appearances for Sporting Kansas City and Sporting KC II since arriving from the LA Galaxy Academy in April 2019.

The 21-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2021, starting six MLS matches and earning his first call-up to the U.S. Men’s National Team for a two-week training camp last December in Carson, California.

One of the best young goalkeepers in American soccer, Pulskamp capitalized on his MLS debut last April by becoming the third-youngest keeper in league history to win a regular season match in a 2-1 victory at the New York Red Bulls.

He ended 2021 with a 3-2-1 record as an MLS starter, picking up a 2-1 win over Austin FC on May 9 and securing his first clean sheet in a 2-0 triumph over the LA Galaxy on Oct. 27 at Children’s Mercy Park.

A native of Bakersfield, California, Pulskamp began his professional career by signing for Sporting Kansas City II in 2019.

He has started 31 matches for the club, posting 105 saves across the USL Championship and MLS NEXT Pro—including five saves in SKC II’s inaugural MLS NEXT Pro game against Colorado Rapids 2 on March 27.

Pulskamp joined the U.S. senior national team late last year and was an unused substitute in a 1-0 friendly win over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Dec. 18. He previously featured for the U.S. U-20s in a friendly against regional rivals Mexico on Jan. 18, 2020, and competed at a U.S. U-18 training camp in June 2018 at Compass Minerals National Performance Center, Sporting’s training home in Kansas City, Kansas.

Pulskamp arrived in Kansas City in 2019 after a two-year stint in the LA Galaxy Academy, where he competed at the U-17 and U-19 levels in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy.

During his time with the Galaxy, he also went on trial with English Premier League outfit AFC Bournemouth in 2018. Prior to joining LA, he represented youth academies Real So Cal and Central California Aztecs in his home state.
