Nearly six months of countless hours of rehabilitative work has paid big dividends for Kansas City Kansas Community College basketball guard Samantha Hurst.

Sidelined by a torn articular cartilage in her right knee 10 games into the 2013-2014 Lady Blue Devil season, Hurst’s intensive rehabilitative work from micro-fracture surgery has earned her a scholarship to continue her basketball career at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville.

“I felt comfortable when I visited there,” Hurst said. “The environment and atmosphere of the town was awesome; everyone I came in contact with – the coaches, instructors and others on the staff – were very willing to help in whatever way was needed.”

It’s an opportunity Hurst was not sure she’d ever get when she went down in the first eight minutes of the Blue Devils’ home game against Central Methodist Dec. 2.

“I was never afraid I wouldn’t play but I was nervous I would not get the looks I wanted.”

Fortunately, Central Methodist had seen Hurst prior to the injury when she was leading the Blue Devils to a 9-1 start with the only loss at No. 1 ranked North Iowa 91-87. The Blue Devils’ leading scorer at the time, Hurst was averaging 13.6 points including a career high of 25 against Neosho County and 17 against North Iowa. In addition, she was averaging 4.8 rebounds from the guard spot.

“If we had had Sam the entire year, we would not have lost some of the games we lost,” said KCKCC coach Valerie Stambersky, whose Blue Devils finished 24-8 with six of the eight losses to teams ranked in the Top 5 in the nation. “She’s the epitome of what college athletes should be – solid academically, tireless worker, did everything that was asked, never cut corners or made bad decisions, everything you’d want an athlete to be on and off the court.”

Named to “Who’s Who in Community Colleges in America,” Hurst was also a work-study student assisting Athletic Director Tony Tompkins.

“I’m really happy Samantha is getting a scholarship and is going to be able to continue playing basketball,” Tompkins said. “She’s a high quality kid with a great work ethic; very deserving and we’re very proud.”

Hurst began her rehabilitation almost immediately after her injury, spending one to two hours a day five days a week under the watchful eye of KCKCC trainer Rodney Christensen.

“A lot of athletes coming off an injury won’t make the commitment but she was there every day, always with a smile on her face,” Christensen said. “It takes a lot of patience and a lot of hard work and she did it every day with a great attitude.”

Hurst will to continue to work with Christensen through the end of June, then move to the Maryville campus. The daughter of Roger and Lori Hurst of Harrisonville, she has two brothers, Jake and Justin.

At Northwest Missouri, she’ll be reunited with a former KCKCC teammate, Alexandria Blaurock, who was selected KCKCC’s Female Athlete of the Year for 2012-13.

“It’s exciting to know I’ll have someone on the team I know and have played with,” said Hurst, who is not content with just receiving a scholarship. “I want to go there and be successful, not just ride the bench.”

T-Bones game at Gary suspended in the eighth

Monday night’s series opener between the T-Bones and the Gary RailCats was suspended in the bottom of the eighth inning, tied 44, because of rain.

The T-Bones got the scoring started in the fourth inning with Bryan Sabatella’s first home run of the season which put Kansas City on top, 1-0.

In the fifth inning the T-Bones extended the lead to three runs with RBI singles from Byron Wiley and Sabatella.

The RailCats attacked the Kansas City bullpen with a solo run in the sixth off lefty reliever Zach Fowler and added two runs on three straight hits off of Kris Regas before the rain stopped the action.

Sporting KC plays Red Bulls Tuesday in KCK

Sporting Kansas City welcomes the New York Red Bulls to Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan., on Tuesday in a match that features Major League Soccer’s top two teams from 2013.

The match will be nationally televised on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes with coverage beginning at 6:45 p.m.

Tuesday’s match will be the 44th consecutive sellout crowd at Sporting Park. A limited number of tickets are still available – including standing-room only tickets – and are available for purchase at Ticketmaster.com or by calling 888-4KC-GOAL. The first 15,000 fans through the gates will receive a replica MLS Cup championship ring.

Sporting KC and New York are both experiencing a short turnaround as Sporting KC played Toronto FC at home on Friday night and New York was host of the Portland Timbers at Red Bull Arena on Saturday.

Sporting Kansas City striker Dom Dwyer scored twice in the club’s 2-2 draw with Toronto FC and sits atop the MLS goals chart along with fellow Englishman and New York Red Bulls forward Bradley Wright-Phillips. Dwyer and Wright-Phillips each have 10 goals this season heading into Tuesday’s Eastern Conference match.

Dwyer has scored in Sporting KC’s last four matches, a feat only Preki (1996) and Eddie Johnson (2007) have accomplished in the team’s 19-year-history. With a goal against New York, Dwyer will surpass Johnson and join Preki as only the second Kansas City player to score in five straight matches. Wright-Phillips also scored in his team’s last outing, a 2-1 loss to the Portland Timbers. New York has not lost three consecutive matches since June 2013 and have not lost four straight since 2009.

Tuesday will be Sporting KC’s sixth of seven matches in a 28-day span. The Red Bulls will play their fifth of five games during that same time frame.

The last time these two clubs met, New York defeated Sporting KC 3-2 at Sporting Park with goals from Jonny Steele, Fabian Espindola and Lloyd Sam. Sporting KC’s Dwyer also tallied in that match, marking the first goal of his MLS career. Sam leads New York in assists this season with five.

Another scoring threat for the visitors will be Designated Player Thierry Henry, who heads into Tuesday’s match with three goals and four assists. Since the start of the 2011 MLS regular season, Henry ranks third with 42 goals in 88 starts. In seven matches against Sporting KC, Henry has zero goals and one assist.

After the conclusion of Tuesday’s match, fans are welcome down to the pitch to watch Matt Besler, Graham Zusi and the U.S. Men’s National Team face Azerbaijan. The match will be shown on the Sporting KC videoboard as well as in the Boulevard Members Club. The friendly is part of the Send-Off Series as the USMNT prepares for this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
