Barone helps snap T-Bones’ slide

Sioux Falls, S.D. — The T-Bones got ace material from Daniel Barone in a 7-3 victory over Sioux Falls on Friday night.

Barone (2-0) didn’t walk anyone, scattered seven hits and allowed only three runs, including two in the first inning off a two-out two-RBI single from Chris Valencia. Barone then retired 19 out of the next 20 Canaries before leaving with two on and no outs in the eighth inning, as the T-Bones snapped a three-game losing streak.

Kansas City’s Vladimir Frias jump-started the offense with a one-out triple in the second. He scored on a Byron Wiley double, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

The T-Bones took the lead for good in the fourth inning on a two-out RBI single off the bat of Brian Erie that scored Frias and Wiley, who was on first but came around when the ball got past right fielder Steve Tinoco. That gave Kansas City a 3-2 lead. The T-Bones would cash in on additional two-out RBIs from Danny Richar in the fifth and Erie in the eighth.

Kansas City reliever Kris Regas pitched two innings in which he allowed just one hit and struck out four. Regas, Kansas City’s only other pitcher besides Barone, allowed the lone walk for the T-Bones, compared to six free passes allowed Thursday night.

Erie ended the game going 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and Frias went 3 for 5 and scored three times, pushing his season average to .321.

KVL announces all-league softball team

The Kaw Valley League has announced its all-league softball team.

Several Wyandotte County students have been named to the team.

The all-league team athletes from Wyandotte County include:

First team: Alyssa Sullivan, senior, Piper, catcher; Lexi Tendick, sophomore, Bonner Springs, infielder; Caitlin Reed, junior, Bonner Springs, outfielder; and Mikaela Bennett, junior, Bonner Springs, utility.

Second team: Brooklyn Lauritzen, sophomore, Piper, infielder; Ashley King, junior, Piper, outfielder; Hannah Fehlhafer, junior, Bonner Springs, pitcher; and Abby Henry, sophomore, Piper, pitcher.

Honorable mention: Mariah Sanchez, junior, Bishop Ward, infielder; Maddie McCall, sophomore, Piper, infielder; Kia Boyd, junior, Piper, infielder; and Kaylynn Stratton, junior, Turner, infielder.

Two Shawnee Heights basketball standouts sign with KCKCC

Two members of Shawnee Heights state tournament basketball team have signed to continue their basketball careers at Kansas City Kansas Community College.

Tevin Downing, a 6-3 wing guard, and Braeson Sester, a 6-2 combo guard, are the fifth and sixth in-state signees with KCKCC coach Kelley Newton.

Downing averaged 10 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists and Sester 8.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3 assists a game on a 16-6 Shawnee Heights’ team that won 10 in a row before losing in the state semifinals to Highland Park.

“Both Tevin and Braeson were vital to our success,” said coach Sam Stroh. “Braeson was second on our team in rebounding and Tevin did a great job of buying into the team and the coaching staff. Both players will have a bright future if they put in the time and commitment in the off season.”

Sester said being teamed again with Downing was just one of several reasons for choosing KCKCC.

“I felt comfortable,” Sester said. “I think the program is in good hands and running in the right direction. And the location is good for sure.”

“I felt like they’re pieces that we needed,” Newton said. “Tevin is a long athletic defender, a good one-on-one player; very versatile and a great kid on and off the floor. Braeson is a very good shooter. Very coachable, he’s a combo guard who can defend and handle the ball. I’m real excited about both of them and their abilities as players and good persons.”
