The Wingnuts scored three early runs and a huge run late, and beat Kansas City 4-3 Thursday night at Lawrence Dumont Stadium in Wichita in the Kansas Turnpike Showdown.

The T-Bones scored first on a Danny Richar double that brought around David Espinosa from first. But the Wingnuts countered with two runs off three doubles in the bottom of the first inning off Kansas City starter Andy Noga to take a 2-1 lead.

Noga then settled down, finishing the game with five innings and just two earned runs on six hits.

The T-Bones battled back and tied the game at 3-3 with single runs in the fourth and sixth innings, but the Wingnuts got a clutch two-out RBI single from Chris McClendon against Kansas City reliever Kyle DeVore (0-1), who came off the disabled list and made his T-Bones debut.

The T-Bones made things interesting in the ninth inning, however, getting an infield single from Bryan Sabatella off of closer Matt Nevarez (9) with one out. Sabatella was thrown out at second, though, trying to steal with David Espinosa at the plate. Espinosa, who had three of Kansas City’s 11 hits, including two doubles, then struck out and ended a comeback attempt.

The T-Bones dropped the season series to Wichita, 6-4. The two teams won’t face each other again in the regular season.

The T-Bones (13-14) begin a three-game series at Laredo on Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30.

David Espinosa had two hits and scored two runs, including one on his first home run of the season, as the T-Bones beat the Wingnuts 4-2 Wednesday night at Lawrence Dumont Stadium in the Kansas Turnpike Showdown.

Espinosa gave Kansas City an early 1-0 lead with his first homer in the first inning against Wichita starter Anthony Capra. The T-Bones added another run in the second with an RBI double from Brian Erie that scored T.J. Mittlestaedt from first base and gave the T-Bones an early 2-0 lead. Mittelstaedt and Danny Richar also ended the game with two hits apiece.

T-Bones starting pitcher Daniel Barone (4-0) pitched seven innings and allowed just two runs, both of which came in the seventh. Kansas City’s offense rallied, however, in the top of the eighth inning, securing the win for Barone. With the score tied at 2-2, the first six T-Bones in the eighth reached base against Wichita relievers Matt Robertson (0-2), Alex Hinshaw and Daniel Bennett. The big blow was an RBI single from Nick Giarraputo, who came through with his first hit of the series that gave Kansas City the decisive 4-2 lead.

Chris Squires and Kris Regas (6) pitched two scoreless innings out of the pen, preserving the win and tying the series at one game apiece.

The T-Bones (13-13) and Wingnuts (18-9) conclude their three-game series Thursday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium at 7:05.

In a game that was closer than its final score, Wichita scored five runs in the final two innings and beat Kansas City 7-1 Monday night in the Kansas Turnpike Showdown in Wichita, Kan.

Wichita starter Jon Link could’ve been mistaken for Houdini with the number of times he escaped trouble during his seven solid innings. Link allowed six walks in seven innings. But, with Kansas City’s offense getting only two hits and stranding eight runners, Link held on for this third win of the season.

T-Bones starter Matt Smith (0-3) took the loss despite a solid outing. Through six innings, Smith had allowed just two runs. One costly mistake turned the game around, though, when he gave up a two-run home run to Chris McMurray in the bottom of the seventh that gave the Wingnuts a 4-1 lead. Wichita added three more runs — two unearned after the only error of the game came against T-Bones shortstop Vladimir Frias — against reliever Jared Messer in the eighth.

With Wichita leading 1-0 in the third inning, David Espinosa scored Brian Erie on a groundout. That turned out to be Kansas City’s only run of the game.

The Wingnuts took the lead for good in the fifth inning when Colt Loers drove in McMurray on an RBI single, giving Wichita a 2-1 lead.

The T-Bones (12-13) and Wingnuts (18-8) continue their three-game series Wednesday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium at 7:05.
