Richar’s homer, Barnes’ arm lead T-Bones

Sioux City, Iowa – Danny Richar found the perfect time for his fourth home run of the season, and Casey Barnes tossed a gem in Kansas City’s 4-0 win over Sioux City Tuesday night at Lewis and Clark Park.

The T-Bones got the scoring started in the second inning with an RBI double off the bat of Nick Schwaner that scored Vladimir Frias. That would’ve been enough, but in the next inning, Richar launched a three-run homer off of Sioux City starter Greg Holt (3-8), scoring Robby Kuzdale and David Espinosa. Kuzdale was the only hitter for the T-Bones with a multi-hit game, including his 10th double of the season.

The 4-0 lead was all that Kansas City’s starter Barnes (2-0) needed as he cruised through 7 shutout innings. Barnes allowed just six total base runners and struck out five before turning the ball over to Kris Regas. Regas, who was announced Monday as a pitcher on the American Association’s South All-Star team, pitched 2 scoreless innings in a non-save situation.

The T-Bones (28-30) look to take the series win Wednesday night against Sioux City (25-33) at 7:05. All of the action can be heard on 1660-AM or online at tbonesbaseball.com.

Kansas City Kansas Community College’s middle infield duo of shortstop Hanna Barnhart and second baseman Amanda Holroyd will continue their softball careers at Southwestern Oklahoma State.

An NCAA Division II member in Weatherford, Okla., near Oklahoma City, Southwestern has an enrollment of approximately 5,000 students and competes in the Great American Conference.

Both Barnhart and Holroyd earned post-season honors after helping the Lady Blue Devils finish 31-13 the past season.

Barnhart was a first team selection on the All-Jayhawk Conference team and Holroyd and Barnhart were both named to the All-District second team.

A Bishop Ward grad, Barnhart hit .400 with 17 doubles and 26 RBI.

Holyrod, a graduate of Tonganoxie, was second in runs batted in with 45 while hitting .397 with 18 extra base hits.

“I’m very excited for both Hanna and Amanda; it’s great to see two local standouts move on from our program to a Division II program,” said KCKCC coach Kacy Tillery. “Both are hard workers both on the field and in the classroom and will have no problems in being successful at Southwestern.”

The two Blue Devil standouts were recruited by Barbara Burnett, the new Southwestern Oklahoma coach hired this spring from Independence Community College, like KCKCC a member of the Jayhawk Conference.

“She liked how we played and offered us scholarships,” Holroyd said.

“They are going to a coach and program that expects a lot out of their student athletes but that is normal for both Amanda and Hanna because they expect a lot out of themselves,” Tillery said. “It’s going to be hard to replace these two because of all they have done for our program, Both are great people and it’s been my privilege to have been able to coach them and see them grow as student-athletes as well as off the field as young adults.”

Barnhart said she and Holroyd were not recruited as a duo but both are looking forward to continuing to play together at the NCAA Division II level.

“It just happened to work out that way,” Barnhart said. Barnhart will major in health science and Holroyd in psychology.

Big innings doom Kansas City

Sioux City, Iowa – The Explorers scored in only three innings Monday night, but any two of the three would have been enough in their 13-6 win over Kansas City in the series opener.

With the T-Bones leading 4-0, Sioux City rallied against Kansas City starter Derek Gordon in the third inning. Shortly after Gordon issued back-to-back walks at the start of the inning, Peter Barrows and Amos Ramon delivered back-to-back RBI doubles. By the end of the inning, the Explorers sent 10 to the plate, and scored five runs on four hits and three walks.

Down 5-4 in the fifth inning, Kansas City once again rallied off of Sioux City starter John Straka with a two-run single from Brian Erie that gave the T-Bones a 6-5 lead. Erie, who went hitless in three games at St. Paul during the weekend, ended Monday’s game with a three-for-four performance with three RBIs.

The T-Bones, however couldn’t escape the big inning. Chris Squires (2-3) took the loss for Kansas City as he loaded the bases with two walks and a hit batter before allowing four hits in the sixth. Sioux City would score five runs against Squires and take a 9-6 lead. For good measure, the Explorers added three additional runs in the seventh against Jared Messer.

Kansas City’s offense got going early RBI hits from Erie and T.J. Mittelstaedt in the second inning. The T-Bones added two more runs in the third on a two-out, two-run single from Nick Schwaner that scored Ray Sadler and Danny Richar, and extended Kansas City’s lead to 4-0.

The T-Bones (27-30) look to rebound Tuesday night against Sioux City (25-32) with a 7:05 first pitch from Lewis and Clark Park. The game can be heard on 1660-AM or online at tbonesbaseball.com.
