Dynamo to visit Sporting KC on Friday

Sporting Kansas City will play host to the Houston Dynamo in a nationally televised rivalry match at Sporting Park on Friday night.

The Eastern Conference clash will kick off at 7 p.m. on NBC Sports Network with radio coverage on Sports Radio 810 WHB (English) and La Gran D 1340 AM (Spanish). A limited number of tickets for the game can be purchased online at Ticketmaster.com until they are sold out.

A rematch of the 2013 Eastern Conference Championship, Friday’s contest features two familiar foes.

Sporting KC (12-7-6, 42 points) is second place in the conference, one point behind D.C. United and three points behind Seattle Sounders FC in the Supporters’ Shield race.

Houston (7-13-4, 25 points) is ninth in the East and six points out of playoff position. Since joining MLS in 2006, the Dynamo have qualified for the postseason in eight of their nine seasons.

The clubs have met in each of the last three postseasons, with Houston eliminating Sporting KC in 2011 and 2012 before Peter Vermes’ team prevailed in the 2013 Eastern Conference Championship.

Winners of two MLS Cups each, Sporting KC and Houston have met 15 times during the last four seasons in all competitions, including five playoff tilts and one U.S. Open Cup qualification match in 2011.

Sporting KC holds a 6-3-6 edge during this period and is unbeaten against the Dynamo in seven straight matches dating back to July 2012.

Dedication ceremony set for Wyandotte’s new turf field

Wyandotte High School will hold a dedication ceremony for the new turf football and soccer field at its Roy Edwards Stadium at 5 p.m., Friday, Aug. 29.

The new Astroturf synthetic field was a summer project that took approximately six weeks to complete. Turf fields are much more durable than grass, require lower maintenance costs and offer increased playability for teams, according to district officials.

Following the ceremony, guests are welcome to stay to watch the annual Wyandotte Fall Sports Showcase, which will include a short scrimmage and introduction of the athletes and cheerleading squad.

Frias’ three-hit night leads T-Bones

Vladimir Frias doubled in a run in the fifth and scored two batters later giving Kansas City a lead it wouldn’t forgo in a 3-2 win Tuesday at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, N.D.

Frias, who’s one of the flashiest shortstops in the American Association, used his bat to help the T-Bones get on the board first in a well-pitched game through the middle frames.

Robby Kuzdale, however, led off the top of the fifth with a walk for Kansas City against starter Brian Ernst (8-6).

After Brian Erie sacrificed Kuzdale to second, Frias lashed an RBI double to deep right field that scored Kuzdale and gave Kansas City a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Danny Richar scored Frias on an RBI single to left.

The T-Bones extended their lead to 3-0 in the sixth with an RBI single from Kuzdale that scored Nick Schwaner.

The RedHawks finally cracked T-Bones starter Joe Van Meter (2-1) with solo runs in the sixth and seventh innings, including Travis Higgs’ fifth home run of the season.

Van Meter didn’t walk any as he scattered seven hits and two runs — along with six strikeouts — over 7 innings in the win.

Kris Regas got his 20th save of the season with a scoreless ninth, in spite of walking two Fargo batters.

Four T-Bones batters had multi-hit games, led by Frias’ 3-for-4 night. T.J. Mittelstaedt, who had two hits, notched his team-leading 27th double in the first inning.

The T-Bones (42-51) continue their three-game series at Fargo-Moorhead (39-54) Wednesday night at 7:02. The game can be heard in the Kansas City area on 1660-AM or tbonesbaseball.com.
