The Kansas City Current weathered an early storm from Seattle’s OL Reign before taking control of their Sunday evening match at Children’s Mercy Park.

In the end, the shot that counted was a game-winning penalty kick from team captain Lo’eau LaBonta in the 18th minute.

Goalkeeper A.D. Franch was on top of her game as well, making four saves to preserve a shutout and Kansas City win.

The 1-0 home victory continued a three-game win streak and seven-game unbeaten streak that has seen the Current climb from the bottom of the NWSL standings to fifth place and playoff contention as the season hits its mid-point.

OL Reign was on the front foot from the get-go, winning two set pieces inside the opening five minutes. Tziarra King and Bethan Balcer both narrowly missed shots to open the action.

Against the run of play, Current midfielder Victoria Pickett earned a penalty kick when she was brought down by Reign defender Phoebe McClernon on a run into the 18-yard box. Lo’eau LaBonta took the kick and hit it high into the right corner to put the home team up 1-0.

OL Reign nearly earned the goal right back in the next few minutes, forcing a save, two blocks and a shot off the post in quick succession.

The hydration break at the 30th minute was a turning point for the home side. Down 9 shots to 1, the Current began to press the issue before halftime, getting three shots off in first half stoppage time.

The Current continued its dominant run after halftime, with Kristen Hamilton hitting two crosses to CeCe Kizer just after the break, though Kizer’s shots were off the mark both times.

Hamilton nearly doubled the lead with a great run in the 70th minute, but her low shot to the left corner was saved by OL Reign goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce.

As time ran down, the Reign pushed numbers high up the field but was unable to find an equalizing goal.

Kansas City defender Alex Loera, a force on both ends of the pitch in the match, was carried off the field with a lower leg injury in stoppage time. She will be evaluated by the team’s medical staff on Monday.

After the match, head coach Matt Potter praised his team’s growth this season.

“I think the journey that we’re on as a group is still to be continued,” said the coach, “but we definitely like where we’re going. So if we can continue to do the things that we like to do, keep our feet on the ground and keep working hard like we do every day, then hopefully there’s more nights like this in the future.”

The Current has the week off before returning to training in advance of the next home game on July 31 against the Orlando Pride.

U.S. Women’s National Team coming to KCK for friendly match in September

The U.S. Women’s National Team will kick off its fall schedule with two matches against perennial African champions Nigeria, with the first match being played at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 3 at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas.

The match will be carried at noon on Fox, WDAF-TV.

“Hosting the U.S. National Team in the Soccer Capital of America is always exciting,” said Kansas City Current President Allison Howard. “We look forward to hosting them, along with the Super Falcons, and showing the world how the Midwest gets behind the beautiful game.”

The match in Kansas City, Kansas, brings the U.S. Women’s National Team back to the home area of Vlatko Andonovski for the second time since being named head coach at the end of 2019. It will be the sixth overall match at Children’s Mercy Park for the USWNT. Kansas City, Missouri, was recently named as one of 11 U.S. host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“First, I’m just excited to play two matches against Nigeria. They have some very talented players who will present a lot of different problems for us to solve on both sides of the ball,” Andonovski said. “Secondly, of course we’re looking forward to bringing the team back to one of the best soccer cities and best soccer stadiums in the United States in Kansas City.”

Nigeria, which is led by an American, long-time college coach Randy Waldrum, is currently competing in the 2022 African Women’s Cup of Nations, a 12-team tournament that will send its top four finishers to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The Super Falcons are 11-time African champions and by far the most successful women’s soccer nation from the continent. Nigeria has participated in all eight FIFA Women’s World Cups that have been contested.

The U.S. qualified for its ninth consecutive World Cup on July 7 following its second group stage match at the Concacaf W Championship, becoming the 12th team and the first nation from Concacaf to qualify for Australia and New Zealand.

Presales for the matches will begin on Monday, July 25, with the public sale beginning on Monday, Aug. 1. Kansas City Current Season Ticket Members will have early access to purchase tickets on Friday, July 29.

KC Current defeats Washington to extend winning streak to six

Just over one week after the Kansas City Current (4-4-3, 15pts, 7th place) earned its first regular season road victory in club history, the Current doubled that total with a 1-0 win over the Washington Spirit (1-5-6, 9pts, 11th place) at Segra Field on Sunday evening.

A 68th minute goal from second-half substitute Cece Kizer gave the Current the advantage, and a massive penalty kick save from Current goalkeeper A.D. Franch in second half stoppage time secured three points for the visitors.

“AD has been fantastic for us all season long, and today just gave her that moment that she truly deserves,” said head coach Matt Potter. “She’s led on a day-to-day basis in the manner that she goes about being A.D, whether it be a mother, whether it be at training, whether it be as a team member and now as a performer. When that moment came, we have high expectations for her, and she lived up to those expectations, or in a sense lived into the expectations that we have for her because she’s that good.”

The Current continued making club history with Sunday’s win. Potter’s squad extended its unbeaten streak to a franchise-best six matches, while the win gave Kansas City back-to-back regular season wins for the first time in team history. To top it off, the Current’s 15 points through 11 matches rank just one behind the team’s point total from the entirety of last season.

Sunday’s match started slowly, though, with neither side separating themselves through the first 45 minutes. Kansas City and Washington combined for six total shots and zero shots on target through the opening half.

The Current’s best chance came in the 32nd minute when forward Elyse Bennett was played through on goal down the left side, but her left-footed shot from 10 yards out sailed just over the bar.

The second 45 minutes was a different story. Current forward Kristen Hamilton had two scoring opportunities sail just wide in the 51st and 52nd minute, then Bennett nearly converted a headed goal on a cross from defender Hailie Mace minutes later.

The Spirit then went on the offensive, which forced Franch and Kansas City’s back line into action. Franch made athletic stops in the 57th and 61st minute, and defender Kate Del Fava cleared a goal-bound header off the line in the 58th minute.

Kansas City’s breakthrough finally came in the 68th minute. Following a short throw-in, a Del Fava cross bounced off a Spirit defender in the goal box before finding Kizer’s feet. Kizer did just enough to nod the ball past Washington goalkeeper Devon Kerr to give the Current a 1-0 lead while also marking her second goal for the club.

The Spirit continued to press down a goal and created the most clear-cut scoring opportunity of the match in second half stoppage time. Forward Tinaya Alexander made a weaving run into Kansas City’s goal box two minutes into added time and drew contact, resulting in the referee calling for a penalty kick.

Alexander stepped up to take the spot kick and fired a low shot to Franch’s right, but the Current goalkeeper dove and got a firm right hand behind Alexander’s shot. Franch then pounced on the loose ball, and Kansas City saw out the contest from there to preserve the victory. Franch finished Sunday’s contest with four saves and earned her second clean sheet of the regular season.

Kansas City returns to Children’s Mercy Park for the first time in nearly a month next Sunday, July 17, against OL Reign (4-2-5, 17pts, 4th place) at 6:00 p.m. The match is the first of a two-game homestand for the Current, with the second match coming on July 31 against the Orlando Pride.
