The Bishop Ward Lady Cyclones won the Crossroads Conference title outright Friday evening, with a 76-17 drubbing of the Barstow Lady Knights. It was Ward’s ninth consecutive win.

Ward had control of the game all night, starting with defense. Applying heavy pressure on the ball, the Cyclones also had a knack for picking off Barstow passes for turnovers that turned into fast breaks.

Guards Jimena Lopez De La Cruz and Vanesa Otero forced the tempo on offense, and drove to the basket or found forwards Perla Frayre-Delgado and Tina Rosales for scoring opportunities.

De La Cruz led the scoring with 15 points. Delgado dropped in 14, and Rosales 10. In all, 10 players scored for the Lady Cyclones.

Head coach Dominique Washington, in his first year at Ward, has the team playing at a high tempo and encouraged the team’s intensity and effort. Ward administrator Kam Ridley also credited the team’s success this year to the teamwork of a group of players with years of experience together.

Ward’s prospects next year look bright, losing only one starter to graduation. Key players like Delgado and Otero are still juniors. Freshman Mercedez Dominguez lit up the offense when she came on late, hitting 3 of 4 three-point shots.

The Lady Cyclones hold a 14-4 record going into the last two games of the season. Ward will play host to Atchison on Monday at KCKCC, tipping off at 6 p.m. The Cyclones will finish the regular season on the road at Pembroke Hill on Feb. 25, and are projected to be the host of a KSHSAA 3A playoff game on March 3.

The Wyandotte Bulldogs’ multi-threat attack was more than enough to carry the team to a win at Sumner Academy on Tuesday night. With four players scoring in double figures, Wyandotte’s prolific offense claimed a 78-45 road victory.

The Bulldogs’ Diamond Hines provided the outside scoring punch, draining 3 three-pointers in the first quarter. Jehoido Goins controlled under the basket and converted 6 of his 7 chances at the free throw line.

Anwar Crockett found his opportunities driving to the basket and came out strong after the half, scoring 9 in the third quarter. Torry Moore worked for open shots at the left elbow and scored 12 in the game.

Freshman Jammial Hicks led the Sabres in scoring. He found his footing after halftime, hitting 3 three-pointers and tallying 14 of his game-high 18 points.

The two teams won’t wait long for a rematch, completing the season series on Friday at Wyandotte. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.

The Sumner Academy Lady Sabres defeated Wyandotte 66-32 in their Tuesday evening match at Sumner.

Junior guard Jordyn Rowe hit 10 three-point shots on her way to 38 points overall in the game. The Lady Bulldogs played tough interior defense, led by senior Jada Ali, but couldn’t chase Rowe off the line and didn’t have the offensive power to keep pace.

Rowe was recognized at halftime for reaching the 1,000 point career mark last week at Atchison. In addition to the Sumner varsity team, she is a member of the Missouri Phenom 17U Nike team. She keeps up a busy schedule off the court as well, volunteering at the Roswell Church of Christ Kids’ Kitchen, and maintaining a 3.7 grade point average at Sumner.

In addition to Rowe’s offense, Sumner got 6 points and excellent ball-handling from Allaina Spencer. For  Wyandotte, Jada Ali and Aysha Alexander led the scoring with 7 each. Ali was helped from the court in the third quarter after a head-to-head collision and did not return to the game.

The Lady Sabres play next at home against Harmon on Feb. 25. Wyandotte will play at Harmon on Feb. 24, tipping off at 5:30 p.m.
