The 70th Shawnee Mission North Relays were held Friday afternoon, featuring elite high school track competition from the Kansas City area and around northeast Kansas.
Athletes from several Wyandotte County high schools qualified for the competitive meet, including Piper, Harmon, Wyandotte, Washington, Sumner Academy, Bishop Ward and Turner high schools.
The Piper Pirates figured heavily in the competition, winning two events and placing second in two others. The Piper boys placed fourth in the team competition, and the girls placed 12th.
Piper’s Kaiti Lindstrom won the girls’ pole vault with a vault of 11-feet, 6-inches, beating out Reece Baker, her 5A rival from Lansing. Lindstrom narrowly missed a follow-up attempt at 12 feet.
The Piper boys’ 4×100-meter relay team, the fastest in the state this season, also took first place at the meet. The team beat its own school record with a time of 41.87 seconds, less than a tenth off the meet record set by Schlagle in 1993.
Piper softball star Kylie Brockman placed second in the girls’ javelin throw and beat her own school record with a distance of 124-feet, 9-inches.
Grant Lockwood placed second and bettered his previous Piper school record time in the boys’ 800-meter dash at 1-minute, 54.04-seconds.
Wyandotte’s Jaquelyn Perez-Vela brought home some meet points for the Bulldogs by placing seventh in the girls’ 400-meter dash with a time of 59.86 seconds. She also placed 11th overall in the girls’ 100-meter dash.
A’luel Miller of Harmon and Mikayla Henry of Washington tied for ninth in the girls’ long jump with identical marks of 16-feet, 4 1/2-inches.
Seven meet records were broken at this year’s event, and a new Kansas record was set in the boys’ 400-meter run by William Jones of Blue Valley High School. Jones’s time of 46.29 seconds was also the second-best in the country this season.
The North Relays cap the regular season for most teams. League meets start this week, then regionals the following week. The state meet in Wichita will take place May 27 and 28.

Sumner Academy’s baseball team had an early lead on Pembroke Hill when the teams met Thursday at Legends Field, but the Raiders’ power in the middle innings caught up with them, sending the visitors home with an 8-3 win.
The Raiders got on the board with one run in the top of the second inning, but third baseman Antonio Dunn led the charge back for the Sabres, driving in Juan Galindo and Raul Martinez with a single to left.
The Raiders recaptured the lead in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run to left field by Reece Nutter. Pembroke Hill extended the lead to 6-2 in the top of the fifth on a string of base hits, and tacked on two more runs in the seventh.
Dunn led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and scored on Marcus Dierks’s single, but the Sabres got no closer in their comeback attempt.
Anthony Mendez pitched four innings for the Sabres, and Dunn and Martinez both took a turn on the mound in relief.
Dunn was the offensive star for Sumner, going 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs batted in. Charlie Meek and Juan Galindo each went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.
The Sabres’ record is now 11-5 with just four games remaining in the regular season. Regional playoffs start May 16.

The Schlagle Stallions baseball team got their first win of the season on the biggest stage of the season, 15-4 over the Harmon Hawks at Legends Field, home of the Kansas City Monarchs.
Harmon took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, loading the bases and getting runners home on a walk and a hit batter.
Hawks’ starting pitcher Daniel Hernandez pitched two scoreless innings, with five strikeouts, to open the game, but loss of control in the third inning opened the gates for the Stallions, who notched eight runs in the frame. Schlagle pitcher Joey Marshall hit an RBI double that capped the offense.
The Hawks clawed back one run in the bottom of the third on Abraham Miranda’s RBI double to left that scored Lucas Nelson, but Marshall induced consecutive ground ball outs to get out of the inning without further damage.
The Stallions went on another tear in the fifth inning, pushing aggressively on the basepaths to cause problems for the Harmon defense. They ran out to a 15-3 lead, scoring all seven runs with two outs in the inning.
Hernandez got one back for Harmon, stealing second and then dashing all the way home on an errant throw, but Schlagle closed out the game at 15-4.
Shea Rainey was 1-for-3 at the plate for Schlagle, with a double and two runs batted in. Marius Washington reached base in all four plate appearances — the hard way — getting hit by a pitch each time.
Miranda led the Hawks on offense with a double, two walks and two runs batted in.
