Piper, Washington, Bishop Ward advance to substate finals in boys basketball

Some area high school basketball teams have made it past the substate opening game and into the finals this weekend.

The Piper, Washington and Bishop Ward boys’ teams advanced and play in the substate finals this weekend.

Piper defeated Sumner Academy, 76-56, to advance, and takes on an undefeated team in the substate finals.

Piper, in Class 4A, Division I, plays at home for the substate championship at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 7. Piper’s opponent is Basehor-Linwood, which has a 20-0 record. Piper is 13-7 this season.

Washington, competing in Class 5A substate, will play Lansing for the substate final at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at Washington High School. Washington defeated Topeka West, 68-51, to advance.

Washington is 16-4 this season and Lansing is 12-8.

Bishop Ward, in Class 4A, Division II, defeated Perry-Lecompton, 55-49 on Thursday at the Perry-Lecompton substate.

Bishop Ward, 5-15, next faces Osawatomie, 12-8, in the substate finals at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at Perry-Lecompton.

Standoff in Piper area ends peacefully

A standoff in the Piper area has ended peacefully, according to police.

The standoff lasted for hours until a person came out of a home without incident, a police spokesman said.

The man was taken into custody, the spokesman said.

The incident started at 11:15 a.m. March 5 when officers responded to an armed disturbance in the 2400 block of North 123rd Street, the spokesman said.

A man in his early 30s entered a residence where he did not live, and had an altercation with the homeowners, the police spokesman said. At some point there were shots fired, and some of the details concerning the gunfire are still unknown, according to police.

The suspect then barricaded himself inside another residence, according to police, and the standoff ensued.

Officers set up a perimeter around the residence and started negotiations, the spokesman said. The communication lasted for several hours, until the suspect came out of the residence.

The incident remains under investigation by the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department’s major case unit, which is encouraging anyone with information to call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS.

Man barricaded in Piper standoff

A standoff was going on throughout the day in the Piper area, according to authorities.

At about 11:15 a.m. March 5, a man in his early 30s broke into a residence in the 2400 block of 123rd Street, a police spokesman said.

There was an altercation between people inside the house and the person, and it is possible that shots were fired, the spokesman stated.

The man who broke into the residence then went inside another residence and barricaded himself, the spokesman said.

Police have been in contact with the man, who was refusing to come out, according to the latest information from authorities.

It is unknown if the man is injured, and there are no other injuries, the spokesman stated.
