913 Day celebration planned in Wyandotte County

913 Day will be celebrated throughout Wyandotte County on Tuesday, Sept. 13.

The celebration will span all areas of Kansas City, Kansas, from Strawberry Hill to Basehor and Bonner Springs, from Quindaro to Armourdale, Argentine, and Turner, throughout the day with a 913 Day Festival Celebration from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13.

The family event will include over 30 vendors along with entertainment at the historic Vernon School, 3436 N. 27th St., Kansas City, Kansas. There will be a Kid’s Zone sponsored by Cross-Lines Community Outreach and Aetna Better Health of Kansas.

A Quindaro Ruins tour will take place at 3:00 p.m. in partnership with Urban Hike KC & the Quindaro Ruins Project. Register online at www.913day.org.

“The 913 Day Celebration will bring the community and businesses together through the promotion of entrepreneurship sharing the good that is taking place in the 913 area code in Wyandotte County with $9.13 specials at participating businesses and a celebration with over 30 vendors, entertainment and family festivities at Vernon School,” said Sheyvette Dinkens, 913 Day planning chair.

The 913 Day celebration is made possible by the Wyandotte County Economic Development Council, Sunflower Health Plan, Visit Kansas City Kansas, Thula B., E-Ship Rising, Marites Altuna, Kendon McClaine, Nelson Gabriel and Wyandotte County District Attorney Mark Dupree.

In September 2020, Earnest Jackson, Samuel Lockridge and Kendon McClaine worked with the UG to create a proclamation to honor 913 Day in Wyandotte County. The community will continue to preserve their work and celebrate Wyandotte County, according to a spokesman. – Information from Kathy Hanis

Silver Alert issued

Larry Greene

A Silver Alert has been issued for Larry Greene, 69, according to the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

Greene was last seen about 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, near the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Greene is 5-8, 150 pounds, with brown eyes and gray hair. He wears glasses. He has dementia, according to police.

Anyone who has information about his whereabouts should call 911, according to police.

Inmate walks away from Lansing Correctional Facility

Minimum-custody inmate Michael Shane Stroede has been placed on escape status after it was reported at 11:05 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, that he walked away from Lansing Correctional Facility.

Stroede, a 43-year-old male, was reported missing when the offender could not be located at the minimum-security unit, according to a spokesman.

Stroede is serving a 111-month sentence for a 2021 drug conviction in Rice County. Stroede has seven prior convictions dating back to 1999.

Stroede is 5 feet 10 inches tall, 180 pounds with hazel eyes and shaved head. He has several tattoos across his upper body and arms.
